Erectile dysfunction: The impact on the female partner and on the couple: The role of the urologist [Disturbi dell'erezione: Impatto sulla donna e sulla coppia: Il ruolo dell'urologo]

Erectile dysfunction, far from being only a male pathology, is a problem that influences negatively the sexual life of the female partner and, as a consequence, the couple life. Medical counselling is therefore of upmost importance and consists of a complete history taking and subsequent accurate planning of the investigations that are required followed by a therapeutic approach tailored to the gravity of the erectile dysfunction. A clear and earnest communication with both female and male partners is paramount, as well as refraining from doing common mistakes as excluding the female partner form the diagnostic and therapeutic array, underestimating the psychological components of erectile dysfunction, or confusing this disease with a loss of libido. \ua9 Copyright 2006, CIC Edizioni Internazionali

Gender identity disorder and reassignment procedures. The moment of sex reassignment surgery: a clinical research

Objective. The aim of this paper is to analyze the moment of sex reassignment surgery in individuals with gender identity disorder. Material and methods. During a period of seven months, the subjects undergoing sex reassignment surgery at the Urological Clinic of the Hospital of Cattinara of the University of Trieste (7 individuals, average age 40, all maleto-female subjects), participated in a semi-structured questionnaire interview and completed the Machover Test used in an atypical way, three-four days after the operation. Results. All the subjects demonstrated a negatory attitude to the anxieties and suffering related to the surgery, but these feelings were present at an unconscious level as revealed by the dreams told by the patients. Very little attention was given to body's concreteness and this was especially evident in the results of the Machover Test. The emotional dimension immediately after the sex reassignment surgery was euphoric, almost manic. All the subjects stated they were pleased and they did not regret at all undergoing the operation. Conclusions. These initial results confirm that sex reassignment surgery is an appropriate therapy for gender identity disorder and they underline the necessity of doing a follow-up study on the same patients

Transport properties of powder-in-tube processed MgB2 tapes

Nickel-sheathed magnesium diboride superconducting tapes have been fabricated by the powder-in-tube method from reacted commercially available powders. At 4.2 K and self field, a transport current density value jc of 105 A/cm2 has been reached over long portions of unsintered monofilamentary tapes. The irreversibility lines both for a magnetic field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the MgB2 superconducting tape have been determined by magnetoresistance measurements, showing some degree of anisotropy. These data are consistent with the X-ray diffraction observation of a slight texturing process of the MgB2 grains occurring during the cold working procedure. \ua9 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V
