Despite the diversity of banana varieties in Brazil, only a few cultivars have the proper agronomic traits and fruit quality for commercial exploitation. This study aimed at evaluating the physicochemical traits and sensorial acceptance of banana genotypes, in order to identify those with potential for commercial growing. Six improved banana genotypes were assessed (BRS Maravilha, PC 0101, FHIA 18, TM 2803, YB 4203 and BRS Caipira), as well as three commercial cultivars (Grand Naine, Pacovan and Prata Anã). Analyses of peel and pulp color, peel thickness, pulp yield, moisture, pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity, total carotenoids and sensorial acceptance were performed. The BRS Maravilha, FHIA 18, YB 4203 and BRS Caipira genotypes presented physicochemical traits similar to the Grand Naine, Pacovan and Prata Anã commercial cultivars. The BRS Maravilha and TM 2803 genotypes had sensorial acceptance similar to the Prata Anã and Grand Naine cultivars, and are therefore promising for commercial growing, with the advantage of being resistant to the black Sigatoka and Panama disease. © 2016, Universidade Federal De Goias (UFG). This was a retrospective analysis of the medical charts of 145 patients treated at the Bronchoscopy and Thoracic Surgery Clinic of the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (HC-Unicamp, State University of Campinas Hospital das Clínicas) over a period of 10 years. There was a significant difference related to the site of first medical visit (Unicamp-HC versus other institutions) in terms of the time elapsed between the suspicion of bronchial aspiration and the actual respiratory endoscopic examination. However, no significant difference was found in the rate of positive results. The low number of referral centers that provide emergency respiratory endoscopy can negatively influence the treatment of patients under suspicion of bronchial aspiration, jeopardizing the overall recovery in the mid- and long-term.3411956958Zerella, J.T., Dimler, M., McGill, L.C., Pippus, K.J., Foreign body aspiration in children: Value of radiography and complications of bronchoscopy (1998) J Ped Surg, 33 (11), pp. 1651-1654Fraga, A.M., Reis, M.C., Zambon, M.P., Toro, I.C., Ribeiro, J.D., Baracat, E.C., Foreign body aspiration in children: Clinical aspects, radiological aspects and bronchoscopic treatment (2008) J Bras Pneumol, 34 (2), pp. 74-82Swanson, K.L., Prakash, U.B., Midthun, D.E., Edell, E.S., Utz, J.P., McDougall, J.C., Flexible bronchoscopic management of airway foreign bodies in children (2002) Chest, 121 (5), pp. 1695-1700Pritt, B., Harmon, M., Schwartz, M., Cooper, K., A tale of three aspirations: Foreign bodies in the airway (2003) J Clin Pathol, 56 (10), pp. 791-794Cataneo, A.J., Reibscheid, S.M., Ruiz Júnior, R.L., Ferrari, G.F., Foreign body in the tracheobronchial tree (1997) Clin Pediatr (Phila), 36 (12), pp. 701-706Applegate, K.E., Dardinger, J.T., Lieber, M.L., Herts, B.R., Davros, W.J., Obuchowski, N.A., Spiral CT scanning technique in the detection of aspiration of LEGO foreign bodies (2001) Pediatr Radiol, 31 (12), pp. 836-840Lima, J.A., Fischer, G.B., Felicetti, J.C., Flores, J.A., Penna, C.N., Ludwig, E., Aspiração de corpo estranho na árvore traqueobrônquica em crianças: Avaliação de seqüelas através de exame cintilográfico. Cambridge Colour Test: reproducibility in normal trichromats

    Get PDF
This study evaluated reproducibility of the Trivector subtest of the Cambridge Colour Test. Data for normal trichromats were obtained in Brazil (N=111) at T0, six (T1), and 12 months later (T2), and in the United Kingdom (N=79), with test directly followed by a retest. Coefficients of repeatability – Bland-Altman indices – for Protan, Deutan, and Tritan vectors were similar for both datasets. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) – measures of reliability – were low or moderate for these relatively homogeneous datasets; for a heterogeneous dataset, comprising color-normal and abnormal observers, ICCs were 0.80–0.98, indicating high discriminative accuracy of the Trivector subtest

Effect of surgical treatment on the cellular immune response of gastric cancer patients

Patients with gastric cancer have a variety of immunological abnormalities. In the present study the lymphocytes and their subsets were determined in the peripheral blood of patients with gastric cancer (N = 41) both before and after surgical treatment. The percent of helper/inducer CD4 T cells (43.6 ± 8.9) was not different after tumor resection (43.6 ± 8.2). The percent of the cytotoxic CD8+ T cell population decreased significantly, whether patients were treated surgically (27.2 ± 5.8%, N = 20) or not (27.3 ± 7.3%, N = 20) compared to individuals with inflammatory disease (30.9 ± 7.5%) or to healthy individuals (33.2 ± 7.6%). The CD4/CD8 ratio consequently increased in the group of cancer patients. The peripheral blood lymphocytes of gastric cancer patients showed reduced responsiveness to mitogens. The defective blastogenic response of the lymphocytes was not associated with the production of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) since the patients with cancer had reduced production of TGF-ß1 (269 ± 239 pg/ml, N = 20) in comparison to the normal individuals (884 ± 175 pg/ml, N = 20). These results indicate that the immune response of gastric cancer patients was not significantly modified by surgical treatment when evaluated four weeks after surgery and that the immunosuppression observed was not due to an increase in TGF-ß1 production by peripheral leukocytes.33934

Experimental and numerical simulations of oblique extreme wave conditions in front of a breakwater's trunk and round head

ABSTARCT: Climate change studies already reported sea level rise as an accepted scenario, which induces changes in nearshore wave conditions. A large range of new experiences including water level, run-up, overtopping, hydrodynamic data for different wave steepnesses and directions was performed in the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) wave basin for a rubble mound breakwater with a slope of 1(V):2(H). This work presents, focusing on oblique extreme wave conditions, numerical simulations of the hydrodynamics in that experiment using OpenFOAM®. Results of the wave generation boundary conditions and their propagation, namely elevation of the water level free-surface and velocity data at specific locations are compared and discussed with data from experimental measurements acquired by acoustic wave gauges and acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV) / Vectrino equipment. Although an exact match between numerical and laboratory values was not reached, an appropriate incident wave angle and a reasonable amplitude of velocities and water depths was achieved and the same happened to the statistics of those values

Dasyatidae no Cretáceo da Amazônia Oriental: considerações paleoecológicas

    Get PDF

3D dose distribution measurement using 2D imaging from NaCl optical crystals

    Get PDF
In radiotherapy practice, 1D and 2D dosimeters are used for dose verification prior to patient treatment. Along with high accuracy and precision of dose measurements that these dosimeters provide, acquisition of dose deposition data in three dimensions requires extrapolation of measured data. Development of a 3D dosimeter would provide continuous information of dose distribution in matter. In this work, NaCl 3D crystal has shown that radiation deposition can be imaged using blue laser stimulation in two dimensions. It was further shown that the intensity of collected signal has near – linear dose dependence, however complete signal readout is required, to compensate for gradual signal collection at different depths along the profile of the stimulating laser beam, due to attenuation of the beam within the crystal. A method to extend dose measurement to three dimensions using imaging is proposed.A Chapsky, N A Spooner, A Santos and T Rutte
