Late Triassic (Rhaetian) conodonts and ichthyoliths from Chile
The Late Triassic of the back arc Domeyko Basin, Chile is characterized by the onset of marine sedimentation that persisted throughout the rest of the Mesozoic. Carbonate bulk samples from the Punta del Viento Limestone Formation have yielded a numerically small, but apparently widespread, conodont fauna including Epigondolella mosheri, Epigondolella englandi and Neogondolella steinbergensis. These specimens indicate a Rhaetian (Epigondolella mosheri conodont Biozone roughly equivalent to the Paracochloceras amoenum ammonoid Biozone) age for this unit. Their recovery represents the first record of conodonts from Chile, and also indicates a considerable potential for use in correlating sequence stratigraphic events within the Mesozoic Marginal Sea in Colombia, Peru and Chile
Australian mayors: what can and should they do?
This paper on the changing role of mayors, and how that role might be strengthened, seeks to fill one of several significant gaps in research and discussion of political governance in Australian local government. It reviews relevant literature and recent developments in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and concludes that if local government is to perform effectively and meet growing community expectations, the capacity of its political arm needs to be enhanced. In that regard, the office of mayor seems a good place to start. The final section of the paper thus sets out a suggested framework of mayoral functions and associated legislative provisions to support an enhanced role.
Recent decades have seen significant developments in the role of mayors across the world. These developments have mirrored the widening international discourse on local governance and civic leadership, and are part of broader changes sweeping through local government. Australian local governments have been subject to wide‐ranging reforms that have addressed structure and efficiency, strategic planning, asset and financial management, community engagement and accountability, and corporate governance. However, little attention has been given to how the intended direction of such reforms interacts with frameworks for political and community governance.
This contrasts markedly with the consistent focus on trends in local politics evident in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe. In those countries particular attention has been given to the importance of mayors as civic leaders, and there has been extensive debate about, amongst other things, how the role of mayors should be structured and evolve, as well as the relative merits of different models of governance.

A search for HI in five elliptical galaxies with fine structure
We report on VLA H I spectral line observations of five early-type galaxies classified as optically peculiar because of the presence of jets, ripples, or other optical fine structure. We detect H I within the primary beam (30' half-power beamwidth) in four of the five systems. However, in only one case is this gas associated with the targeted elliptical galaxy. In the other cases the H I is associated with a nearby gas-rich disk or dwarf galaxy. The one H I detection is for NGC 7626, where we tentatively detect an H I cloud lying between 20 and 40 kpc southwest of the galaxy center. Its origin is unclear. Our failure to detect obvious tidal H I features suggests that if these fine-structure elliptical galaxies are remnants of disk galaxy mergers, either the progenitors were gas-poor or they are well evolved and any gaseous tidal features have dispersed and/or been converted into other phases. Our targeted systems all reside in groups or clusters, and it seems likely that tidal H I is shorter lived in these environments than suggested by studies of more isolated merger remnants
Pre-enriched, not primordial ellipticals
We follow the chemical evolution of a galaxy through star formation and its
feedback into the inter-stellar medium, starting from primordial gas and
allowing for gas to inflow into the region being modelled. We attempt to
reproduce observed spectral line-strengths for early-type galaxies to constrain
their star formation histories. The efficiencies and times of star formation
are varied as well as the amount and duration of inflow. We evaluate the
chemical enrichment and the mass of stars made with time. Single stellar
population (SSP) data are then used to predict line-strengths for composite
stellar populations. The results are compared with observed line-strengths in
ten ellipticals, including some features which help to break the problem of
age-metallicity degeneracy in old stellar populations. We find that the
elliptical galaxies modelled require high metallicity SSPs (>3 x solar) at
later times. In addition the strong lines observed cannot be produced by an
initial starburst in primordial gas, even if a large amount of inflow is
allowed for during the first few x 10E+8 years. This is because some
pre-enrichment is required for lines in the bulk of the stars to approach the

How are emergent constraints quantifying uncertainty and what do they leave behind?
The use of emergent constraints to quantify uncertainty for key policy
relevant quantities such as Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity (ECS) has become
increasingly widespread in recent years. Many researchers, however, claim that
emergent constraints are inappropriate or even under-report uncertainty. In
this paper we contribute to this discussion by examining the emergent
constraints methodology in terms of its underpinning statistical assumptions.
We argue that the existing frameworks are based on indefensible assumptions,
then show how weakening them leads to a more transparent Bayesian framework
wherein hitherto ignored sources of uncertainty, such as how reality might
differ from models, can be quantified. We present a guided framework for the
quantification of additional uncertainties that is linked to the confidence we
can have in the underpinning physical arguments for using linear constraints.
We provide a software tool for implementing our general framework for emergent
constraints and use it to illustrate the framework on a number of recent
emergent constraints for ECS. We find that the robustness of any constraint to
additional uncertainties depends strongly on the confidence we can have in the
underpinning physics, allowing a future framing of the debate over the validity
of a particular constraint around the underlying physical arguments, rather
than statistical assumptions
Principles of protein structure: An established Internet‐based course in structural biology
The Department of Crystallography at Birkbeck College, London, UK, has been running a one‐year, part‐time accredited graduate course, ‘Principles of Protein Structure’, entirely over the Internet since 1996. Students on this course learn the basic principles of the increasingly important subject of structural biology using software programs such as Rasmol and Chime to visualize and manipulate molecular structures in three dimensions. They interact with their tutors, based at Birkbeck, using email and text‐based teleconferencing, and can test their knowledge with multiple choice quizzes on the Web. Over 200 students from thirty countries registered for this course in the last four years. Forty, from central and eastern Europe, were supported by bursaries from the Open Society Institute. The course has been well received by students and its success led us to introduce a similar course in protein crystallography
The impact of binary-star yields on the spectra of galaxies
One of the complexities in modelling integrated spectra of stellar populations is the effect of interacting binary stars besides Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa). These include common envelope systems, cataclysmic variables, novae, and are usually ignored in models predicting the chemistry and spectral absorption line strengths in galaxies. In this paper, predictions of chemical yields from populations of single and binary stars are incorporated into a galactic chemical evolution model to explore the significance of the effects of these other binary yields. Effects on spectral line strengths from different progenitor channels of SNeIa are also explored. Small systematic effects are found when the yields from binaries, other than SNeIa, are included, for a given star formation history. These effects are, at present, within the observational uncertainties on the line strengths. More serious differences can arise in considering different types of SNIa models, their rates and contributions
FM-track: a fiducial marker tracking software for studying cell mechanics in a three-dimensional environment
Tracking the deformation of fiducial markers in the vicinity of living cells embedded in compliant synthetic or biological gels is a powerful means to study cell mechanics and mechanobiology in three-dimensional environments. However, current approaches to track and quantify three-dimensional (3D) fiducial marker displacements remain ad-hoc, can be difficult to implement, and may not produce reliable results. Herein, we present a compact software package entitled “FM-Track,” written in the popular Python language, to facilitate feature-based particle tracking tailored for 3D cell micromechanical environment studies. FM-Track contains functions for pre-processing images, running fiducial marker tracking, and post-processing and visualization. FM-Track can thus aid the study of cellular mechanics and mechanobiology by providing an extensible software platform to more reliably extract complex local 3D cell contractile information in transparent compliant gel systems.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352711019303474Published versio
