Students’ motivation to learn, academic achievement, and academic advising : a meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Investigating students‟ motivation to learn especially among those with learning difficulties is crucial particularly in tertiary academic setting. Universities need to retain their students and reduce attrition. Keeping the students true to their academic calling can be daunting as they come from various backgrounds (e.g. academic, language, family and culture). These diverse and unique sets of challenges can pull the students off course as they may have difficulties adapting, adjusting and coping with new learning and social environments. Recognising these challenges may help universities to identify what affects students‟ academic achievement. As a form of student development support, universities‟ academics are assigned as academic advisors. The main roles of these academic advisors are to provide students with academic advice, assist in making goals, provide guidance and help them to achieve academically. Nevertheless, not much is known on how academic advising can be the important link that helps students to be motivated to learn, stay focused and achieve better throughout their tertiary years. Hence, this study aims to identify students‟ motivation to learn, their coping strategies and their use of academic advising as their support during their years in the university. After a qualitative analysis, there are three critical areas of learning associated with the importance of academic advising identified. They are (1) motivation levels; (2) learning difficulties and (4) academic achievement

Internal control implementation and quality of higher education institutions: a moderation effect testing

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study aims to examine the moderating effect of internal control on the relationship between internal quality assurance implementation and higher education institution (HEI) quality. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed a survey method with hypothesis testing using partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique with a second-order analysis approach. The questionnaire survey was administered to 191 HEIs. Findings – The results revealed that internal control and internal quality assurance implementations are positively associated with HEI quality. Additionally, internal control implementation strengthened the relationship between internal quality assurance and HEI quality. Originality/value – This study adds to the body of knowledge on the moderating role of internal control in the HEI sector and its role in the non-economic aspect, namely, the HEI quality

Performance and comparison of fiber vibration sensing using SAC-OCDMA with direct decoding techniques

Intensity modulated fiber vibrations sensing using Khazani Syed (KS) and Modified Quadratic Congruence Code (MQC) code for quasi distributed vibration measurement have been evaluated. The systems employed Spectral Direct (SD) Decoding for Spectral Amplitude Coding-Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SAC-OCDMA). SAC-OCDMA is adopted because of its enormous impact in dealing with Multiple Access Interference (MAI). The setup was carried out for three sensor points in three consecutive measurements. The performance of the sensing system with the KS and MQC codes were compared at the same weight and number of code sequence. It was observed that the applied vibration frequencies were obtained at the receivers and the signal employing MQC are received at slightly better power than KS code. However, KS code setup employed less number of components and therefore, reduce the cost and complexity of achieving quasi-distributed vibration sensing

The emergence of a broad range of network-driven applications (e.g. multimedia, online gaming) rises the demand for network environments with ability to provide multiservice capabilities with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, a new code family of novel spreading sequences, called Multi-Service (MS) code has been constructed in order to support multiple services in OCDMA system. The performance of the proposed code is demonstrated using mathematical analysis. Different numbers of basic users are used to support triple-play services (audio, data and video) with different QoS requirements. Results indicate that the technique can clearly provide a relative QoS differentiation. Lower value of basic users can support larger number of subscribers as well as delivering better performance in terms of acceptable BER of 10-9 at fixed code weight

Performance analysis of a variable-weight OCDMA system under the impact of fiber impairments

The impact of Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Non-Linear Effects (NLE) including Self-Phase Modulation (SPM) and Four-Wave Mixing (FWM), on the performance of a Variable-Weight Optical Code Division Multiple Access (VW-OCDMA) system at 1.25 Gbps is analyzed by simulation. The results show that CD is the most dominant effect, which increases the users bit error rate (BER) especially for the users with higher weights. In order to investigate the performance of system in service differentiation for users with different weights, Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF) is used to mitigate the effect of CD caused by Single Mode Fiber (SMF). The results show that users with higher weights have better performance as expected and impact of NLE is negligible for distance up to 150 km, considering low launched power

Performance analysis of hybrid SAC-OCDMA/WDMA system using Random Diagonal code

A hybrid Spectral-Amplitude-Coding (SAC) - Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA) /Wavelength - Division-Multiple-Access (WDMA) using Random Diagonal (RD) code is proposed in this paper. The RD code is used in the proposed system due to its receiver's flexibility. The system is simulated using OptiSystem software. In our proposed system, four users of WDMA system with bit rate of 10Gbps is coupled with users of OCDMA system performing on bit rate of 1.25Gbps. Comparing to hybrid SAC-OCDMA /WDMA using KS code, the proposed system offers better performance in term of lower code length and lower bit error rate (BER) at the expense of higher number of filters. The result also shows that the BER of nine RD users are maintained at not more than 10-9 up to 75 km

The Regulatory Framework of Digital Currencies in Malaysia: A Conceptual Paper

    Get PDF
Malaysian regulators have recently published policy regulations for digital currency exchange that operate in the country, which are primarily intended to safeguard against money laundering and the risk of terrorism financing. Notably, previous theoretical and empirical studies have been conducted to explore the government governance on digital currency. However, development of regulatory framework of digital currency in Malaysian context is still lacking in many ways. The current study is based on the former foresight research results and literature review. It highlights the perception of regulators in the world, legal status and taxation policies of digital currency in Malaysia. Thus, the study proposes a conceptual framework that suggests the variables of characteristics of digital currency, perceived security and perceptions of users are important to be considered in developing a conceptual regulatory framework in Malaysian perspectives. The regulator(s) may gain insights of the degree of acceptance of digital currencies and the regulatory frameworks among Malaysians. The development of conceptual regulatory framework will shed insights on designing strategies to achieve an effective and robust Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) control measures associated with the use of digital currency. Such measures will be critical in safeguarding the safety and integrity of the financial system, and in promoting greater transparency in the conduct of digital currency transactions among current and potential investors
