Detoxification of hazardous waste streams using microwave-assisted fluid-bed oxidation

Microwave-assisted oxidation of trichloroethane (TCE) performed at 500-580{degree}C has been found to be significantly more efficient than conventional oxidation methods. Experiments were conducted using a 6 kilowatt, 2.45 gigohertz power supply and a 6 inch bed of silicon carbide granules in a 1 inch diameter quartz reactor tube which in turn was placed in a microwave cavity. After heating the reactor to a given temperature a TCE-air stream was passed through the silicon carbide bed. TCE was almost completely detoxified (98--99%) in a single pass through the silicon carbide bed at 500--580{degree}C. The oxidation products are HCl, CO{sub 2} and CO. By comparison the corresponding single-pass detoxification using conventional thermal methods results in only partial conversion. On recrystallization in metal matrix composites

The plane strain deformation of model continuous fibre composites such as Cu-W provides a vehicle for the study of the macroscopic effects of second phase particles on the strain distribution in the matrix and its possible effects on subsequent recrystallization behaviour. By using metallographic studies based both on optical gridding methods and low temperature recrystallization, the pattern of flow enforced by the fibres can be quantified and related to the spatial distribution of recrystallization events

Seismic, high wind, tornado, and probabilistic risk assessments of the High Flux Isotope Reactor

Natural phenomena analyses were performed on the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Deterministic and probabilistic evaluations were made to determine the risks resulting from earthquakes, high winds, and tornadoes. Analytic methods in conjunction with field evaluations and an earthquake experience data base evaluation methods were used to provide more realistic results in a shorter amount of time. Plant modifications completed in preparation for HFIR restart and potential future enhancements are discussed. 5 figs

Fracture detection in crystalline rock using ultrasonic reflection techniques: Volume 1

This research was initiated to investigate using ultrasonic seismic reflection techniques to detect fracture discontinuities in a granitic rock. Initial compressional (P) and shear (SH) wave experiments were performed on a 0.9 {times} 0.9 {times} 0.3 meter granite slab in an attempt to detect seismic energy reflected from the opposite face of the slab. It was found that processing techniques such as deconvolution and array synthesis could improve the standout of the reflection event. During the summers of 1979 and 1980 SH reflection experiments were performed at a granite quarry near Knowles, California. The purpose of this study was to use SH reflection methods to detect an in situ fracture located one to three meters behind the quarry face. These SH data were later analyzed using methods similar to those applied in the laboratory. Interpretation of the later-arriving events observed in the SH field data as reflections from a steeply-dipping fracture was inconclusive. 41 refs., 43 figs., 7 tabs
