Published ArticleThe emergence of Information Technology (IT) is increasingly influencing the socio-economic and physical landscape of cities. It has also resulted in development of predominantly IT based industrial cities. These cities have the opportunities and challenges with respect to the development of their socioeconomic, infrastructural and environmental conditions because of the influence of the IT based industrial activities. This article therefore pertains to the analysis of the perspective impacts of IT industry and allied activities on the development of an emerging IT industrial activity based city. For this purpose, Pune, an emerging IT city in India was considered as a case study. Survey research methodology and a system dynamics modelling approach were employed to measure the influential socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental parameters of the city by considering the city as a system. This research shows that the location of IT industry and associated functions contribute significantly towards the socio-economic development of a city in terms of IT industry export, State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP), per capita SGDP, employment generation, to name some relevant aspects. However, there would be a reduction in satisfaction level of the infrastructure and an increase in environmental stress in the system, which needs strategic attention. Further, the model results and scenarios can facilitate evolving of feasible policy and strategic guidelines for the wholesome development of such cities

Effective Electromagnetic Lagrangian at Finite Temperature and Density in the Electroweak Model

Using the exact propagators in a constant magnetic field, the effective electromagnetic Lagrangian at finite temperature and density is calculated to all orders in the field strength B within the framework of the complete electroweak model, in the weak coupling limit. The partition function and free energy are obtained explicitly and the finite temperature effective coupling is derived in closed form. Some implications of this result, potentially interesting to astrophysics and cosmology, are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, Revtex

Higher dimensional dust collapse with a cosmological constant

    Get PDF
The general solution of the Einstein equation for higher dimensional (HD) spherically symmetric collapse of inhomogeneous dust in presence of a cosmological term, i.e., exact interior solutions of the Einstein field equations is presented for the HD Tolman-Bondi metrics imbedded in a de Sitter background. The solution is then matched to exterior HD Scwarschild-de Sitter. A brief discussion on the causal structure singularities and horizons is provided. It turns out that the collapse proceed in the same way as in the Minkowski background, i.e., the strong curvature naked singularities form and that the higher dimensions seem to favor black holes rather than naked singularities.Comment: 7 Pages, no figure

    Experimental determination of the 6s^2 ^1S_0 -> 5d6s ^3 D_1 magnetic-dipole transition amplitude in atomic ytterbium

We report on a measurement of the highly forbidden 6s^2 ^1S_0 \to 5d6s ^3 D_1 magnetic-dipole transition in atomic ytterbium using the Stark-interference technique. This amplitude is important in interpreting a future parity nonconservation experiment that exploits the same transition. We find  = 1.33(6)Stat(20)β×104μ0| | ~ = ~ 1.33(6)_{Stat}(20)_{\beta} \times 10^{-4} \mu_0, where the larger uncertainty comes from the previously measured vector transition polarizability β\beta. The M1M1 amplitude is small and should not limit the precision of the parity nonconservation experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures Paper resubmitted with minor corrections and additions based on comments from referee

Supersymmetry and Integrability in Planar Mechanical Systems

We present an N=2-supersymmetric mechanical system whose bosonic sector, with two degrees of freedom, stems from the reduction of an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with the assumption of spatially homogeneous field configurations and a particular ansatz imposed on the gauge potentials in the dimensional reduction procedure. The Painleve test is adopted to discuss integrability and we focus on the role of supersymmetry and parity invariance in two space dimensions for the attainment of integrable or chaotic models. Our conclusion is that the relationships among the parameters imposed by supersymmetry seem to drastically reduce the number of possibilities for integrable interaction potentials of the mechanical system under consideration.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure

Radiating black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions

We prove a theorem that characterizes a large family of non-static solutions to Einstein equations in NN-dimensional space-time, representing, in general, spherically symmetric Type II fluid. It is shown that the best known Vaidya-based (radiating) black hole solutions to Einstein equations, in both four dimensions (4D) and higher dimensions (HD), are particular cases from this family. The spherically symmetric static black hole solutions for Type I fluid can also be retrieved. A brief discussion on the energy conditions, singularities and horizons is provided.Comment: RevTeX 9 pages, no figure

Magnetothermal Conductivity of Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite in the Quantum Limit

We report on the magnetic field (0TB9 \le B \le 9T) dependence of the longitudinal thermal conductivity κ(T,B)\kappa(T,B) of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in the temperature range 5 K T\le T\le 20 K for fields parallel to the cc-axis. We show that κ(T,B)\kappa(T,B) shows large oscillations in the high-field region (B > 2 T) where clear signs of the Quantum-Hall effect are observed in the Hall resistance. With the measured longitudinal electrical resistivity we show that the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated in the high-field regime.Comment: 4 Figures, to be published in Physical Review B (2003

New features of collective motion of intrinsic degrees of freedom. Toward a possible way to classify the intrinsic states

Three exactly solvable Hamiltonians of complex structure are studied in the framework of a semi-classical approach. The quantized trajectories for intrinsic coordinates correspond to energies which may be classified in collective bands. For two of the chosen Hamiltonians the symmetry SU2xSU2 is the appropriate one to classify the eigenvalues in the laboratory frame. Connections of results presented here with the molecular spectrum and Moszkowski model are pointed out. The present approach suggests that the intrinsic states, which in standard formalisms are heading rotational bands, are forming themselves "rotational" bands, the rotations being performed in a fictious boson space.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figure

High scale mixing unification and large neutrino mixing angles

    Get PDF
Starting with the hypothesis that quark and lepton mixings are identical at or near the GUT scale, we show that the large solar and atmospheric neutrino mixing angles together with the small reactor angle Ue3U_{e3} can be understood purely as a result of renormalization group evolution. The only requirements are that the three neutrinos must be quasi degenerate in mass and have same CP parity. It predicts that the common Majorana mass for the neutrinos must be larger than 0.1 eV making the idea testable in the currently planned or ongoing experiments searching for neutrinoless-double-beta decay.Comment: 10 pages, eight figure, two tables; new material added; results remain unchange
