Analytic Amplitudes for Hadronic Forward Scattering : COMPETE Update
We consider several classes of analytic parametrizations of hadronic
scattering amplitudes, and compare their predictions to all available forward
data in hadron-hadron, gamma-p and gamma-gamma reactions. Although these
parametrizations are very close for SQRTs larger than 9 GeV, it turns out that
they differ markedly at low energy, where a universal Pomeron term like ln**2 s
enables one to extend the fit down to SQRTs equal to 4 GeV. We present
predictions on the total cross sections and on the ratio of the real part to
the imaginary part of the elastic amplitude (RHO parameter) for present and
future pp and antipp colliders, and on total cross sections for gamma-p into
hadrons at cosmic-ray energies and for gamma-gamma into hadrons up to SQRTs

Numerical studies towards practical large-eddy simulation
Large-eddy simulation developments and validations are presented for an
improved simulation of turbulent internal flows. Numerical methods are proposed
according to two competing criteria: numerical qualities (precision and
spectral characteristics), and adaptability to complex configurations. First,
methods are tested on academic test-cases, in order to abridge with fundamental
studies. Consistent results are obtained using adaptable finite volume method,
with higher order advection fluxes, implicit grid filtering and "low-cost"
shear-improved Smagorinsky model. This analysis particularly focuses on mean
flow, fluctuations, two-point correlations and spectra. Moreover, it is shown
that exponential averaging is a promising tool for LES implementation in
complex geometry with deterministic unsteadiness. Finally, adaptability of the
method is demonstrated by application to a configuration representative of
blade-tip clearance flow in a turbomachine
The state of tranquility: Subjective perception is shaped by contextual modulation of auditory connectivity
In this study, we investigated brain mechanisms for the generation of subjective experience from objective sensory inputs. Our experimental construct was subjective tranquility. Tranquility is a mental state more likely to occur in the presence of objective sensory inputs that arise from natural features in the environment. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neural response to scenes that were visually distinct (beach images vs. freeway images) and experienced as tranquil (beach) or non-tranquil (freeway). Both sets of scenes had the same auditory component because waves breaking on a beach and vehicles moving on a freeway can produce similar auditory spectral and temporal characteristics, perceived as a constant roar. Compared with scenes experienced as non-tranquil, we found that subjectively tranquil scenes were associated with significantly greater effective connectivity between the auditory cortex and medial prefrontal cortex, a region implicated in the evaluation of mental states. Similarly enhanced connectivity was also observed between the auditory cortex and posterior cingulate gyrus, temporoparietal cortex and thalamus. These findings demonstrate that visual context can modulate connectivity of the auditory cortex with regions implicated in the generation of subjective states. Importantly, this effect arises under conditions of identical auditory input. Hence, the same sound may be associated with different percepts reflecting varying connectivity between the auditory cortex and other brain regions. This suggests that subjective experience is more closely linked to the connectivity state of the auditory cortex than to its basic sensory inputs
Caspase-1 activates gasdermin A in non-mammals
Gasdermins oligomerize to form pores in the cell membrane, causing regulated lytic cell death called pyroptosis. Mammals encode five gasdermins that can trigger pyroptosis: GSDMA, B, C, D, and E. Caspase and granzyme proteases cleave the linker regions of and activate GSDMB, C, D, and E, but no endogenous activation pathways are yet known for GSDMA. Here, we perform a comprehensive evolutionary analysis of the gasdermin family. A gene duplication of GSDMA in the common ancestor of caecilian amphibians, reptiles, and birds gave rise to GSDMA-D in mammals. Uniquely in our tree, amphibian, reptile, and bird GSDMA group in a separate clade than mammal GSDMA. Remarkably, GSDMA in numerous bird species contain caspase-1 cleavage sites like YVAD or FASD in the linker. We show that GSDMA from birds, amphibians, and reptiles are all cleaved by caspase-1. Thus, GSDMA was originally cleaved by the host-encoded protease caspase-1. In mammals the caspase-1 cleavage site in GSDMA is disrupted; instead, a new protein, GSDMD, is the target of caspase-1. Mammal caspase-1 uses exosite interactions with the GSDMD C-terminal domain to confer the specificity of this interaction, whereas we show that bird caspase-1 uses a stereotypical tetrapeptide sequence to confer specificity for bird GSDMA. Our results reveal an evolutionarily stable association between caspase-1 and the gasdermin family, albeit a shifting one. Caspase-1 repeatedly changes its target gasdermin over evolutionary time at speciation junctures, initially cleaving GSDME in fish, then GSDMA in amphibians/reptiles/birds, and finally GSDMD in mammals
Time and Amplitude of Afterpulse Measured with a Large Size Photomultiplier Tube
We have studied the afterpulse of a hemispherical photomultiplier tube for an
upcoming reactor neutrino experiment. The timing, the amplitude, and the rate
of the afterpulse for a 10 inch photomultiplier tube were measured with a 400
MHz FADC up to 16 \ms time window after the initial signal generated by an LED
light pulse. The time and amplitude correlation of the afterpulse shows several
distinctive groups. We describe the dependencies of the afterpulse on the
applied high voltage and the amplitude of the main light pulse. The present
data could shed light upon the general mechanism of the afterpulse.Comment: 11 figure
Adsorption of Reactive Particles on a Random Catalytic Chain: An Exact Solution
We study equilibrium properties of a catalytically-activated annihilation reaction taking place on a one-dimensional chain of length () in which some segments (placed at random, with mean concentration
) possess special, catalytic properties. Annihilation reaction takes place,
as soon as any two particles land onto two vacant sites at the extremities
of the catalytic segment, or when any particle lands onto a vacant site on
a catalytic segment while the site at the other extremity of this segment is
already occupied by another particle. Non-catalytic segments are inert with
respect to reaction and here two adsorbed particles harmlessly coexist. For
both "annealed" and "quenched" disorder in placement of the catalytic segments,
we calculate exactly the disorder-average pressure per site. Explicit
asymptotic formulae for the particle mean density and the compressibility are

Reaction Front in an A+B -> C Reaction-Subdiffusion Process
We study the reaction front for the process A+B -> C in which the reagents
move subdiffusively. Our theoretical description is based on a fractional
reaction-subdiffusion equation in which both the motion and the reaction terms
are affected by the subdiffusive character of the process. We design numerical
simulations to check our theoretical results, describing the simulations in
some detail because the rules necessarily differ in important respects from
those used in diffusive processes. Comparisons between theory and simulations
are on the whole favorable, with the most difficult quantities to capture being
those that involve very small numbers of particles. In particular, we analyze
the total number of product particles, the width of the depletion zone, the
production profile of product and its width, as well as the reactant
concentrations at the center of the reaction zone, all as a function of time.
We also analyze the shape of the product profile as a function of time, in
particular its unusual behavior at the center of the reaction zone
SRAO CO Observation of 11 Supernova Remnants in l = 70 to 190 deg
We present the results of 12CO J = 1-0 line observations of eleven Galactic
supernova remnants (SNRs) obtained using the Seoul Radio Astronomy Observatory
(SRAO) 6-m radio telescope. The observation was made as a part of the SRAO CO
survey of SNRs between l = 70 and 190 deg, which is intended to identify SNRs
interacting with molecular clouds. The mapping areas for the individual SNRs
are determined to cover their full extent in the radio continuum. We used
halfbeam grid spacing (60") for 9 SNRs and full-beam grid spacing (120") for
the rest. We detected CO emission towards most of the remnants. In six SNRs,
molecular clouds showed a good spatial relation with their radio morphology,
although no direct evidence for the interaction was detected. Two SNRs are
particularly interesting: G85.4+0.7, where there is a filamentary molecular
cloud along the radio shell, and 3C434.1, where a large molecular cloud appears
to block the western half of the remnant. We briefly summarize the results

Association of Adherence to a Healthy Diet with Cognitive Decline in European and American Older Adults
Aim: To examine the association between a healthy diet, assessed by the Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI), and cognitive decline in older adults.
Methods: Data from 21,837 participants aged ≥ 55 years from 3 cohorts (Survey in Europe on Nutrition and the Elderly, a Concerted Action[SENECA], Rotterdam Study [RS], Nurses’ Health Study [NHS]) were analyzed. HDI scores were based on intakes of saturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, mono- and disaccharides, protein, cholesterol, fruits and vegetables, and fiber. The Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status in NHS and Mini-Mental State Examination in RS and SENECA were used to assess cognitive function from multiple repeated measures. Using multivariable-adjusted, mixed linear regression, mean differences in annual rates of cognitive decline by HDI quintiles were estimated.
Results: Multivariable-adjusted differences in rates in the highest versus the lowest HDI quintile were 0.01 (95% CI –0.01, 0.02) in NHS, 0.00 (95% CI –0.02, 0.01) in RS, and 0.00 (95% CI –0.05, 0.05) in SENECA with a pooled estimate of 0.00 (95% CI –0.01, 0.01), I 2 = 0%.
Conclusions: A higher HDI score was not related to reduced rates of cognitive decline in European and American older adults
