6.4 GHz Acoustic Sensor for In-situ Monitoring of AFM Tip Wear
This paper demonstrates an acoustic sensor that can resolve atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip blunting with a frequency sensitivity of 0.007%. The AFM tip is fabricated on a thin film piezoelectric aluminum nitride (AlN) membrane that is excited as a film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR). We demonstrate that cutting 0.98 μm off of the tip apex results in a resonance frequency change of 0.4MHz at 6.387GHz. This work demonstrates the potential for in-situ monitoring of AFM tip wear
Nano-electromechanical Zero-dimensional Freestanding Nanogap Actuator
Micromachined free standing nanogap with metal electrodes is presented. The gap size is as small as 17 nm, and can be reduced further with electrostatic or piezoelectric actuation. The nanoscale gap is fabricated by industrial standard optical lithography and anisotropic wet chemical Si etching. Electron transport between the metal electrodes with optical stimulus enhancing photon-electron coupling (plasmon) is presented
Cosmological backreaction of a quantized massless scalar field
We consider the backreaction problem of a quantized minimally coupled
massless scalar field in cosmology. The adiabatically regularized stress-energy
tensor in a general Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background is approximately
evaluated by using the fact that subhorizon modes evolve adiabatically and
superhorizon modes are frozen. The vacuum energy density is verified to obey a
new first order differential equation depending on a dimensionless parameter of
order unity, which calibrates subhorizon/superhorizon division. We check the
validity of the approximation by calculating the corresponding vacuum energy
densities in fixed backgrounds, which are shown to agree with the known results
in de Sitter space and space-times undergoing power law expansions. We then
apply our findings to slow-roll inflationary models. Although backreaction
effects are found to be negligible during the near exponential expansion, the
vacuum energy density generated during this period might be important at later
stages since it decreases slower than radiation or dust.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, v2: comments and a reference added, to appear in

Signatures of Electronic Nematic Phase at Isotropic-Nematic Phase Transition
The electronic nematic phase occurs when the point-group symmetry of the
lattice structure is broken, due to electron-electron interactions. We study a
model for the nematic phase on a square lattice with emphasis on the phase
transition between isotropic and nematic phases within mean field theory. We
find the transition to be first order, with dramatic changes in the Fermi
surface topology accompanying the transition. Furthermore, we study the
conductivity tensor and Hall constant as probes of the nematic phase and its
transition. The relevance of our findings to Hall resistivity experiments in
the high- cuprates is discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Higher moments of nucleon spin structure functions in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and in a resonance model
The third moment of the twist-3 part of the nucleon spin structure
function is generalized to arbitrary momentum transfer and is
evaluated in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) up to order
and in a unitary isobar model (MAID). We show how to link
as well as higher moments of the nucleon spin structure functions
and to nucleon spin polarizabilities. We compare our results with the
most recent experimental data, and find a good description of these available
data within the unitary isobar model. We proceed to extract the twist-4 matrix
element which appears in the suppressed term in the twist
expansion of the spin structure function for proton and neutron.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
A Study of the \eta \pi^{0} Spectrum and Search for a J^{PC} = 1^{-+} Exotic Meson
A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the of the system (where ) produced in the charge exchange reaction at an incident momentum of 18 GeV is presented as a function of
invariant mass, , and momentum transfer squared,
, from the incident to the outgoing system. , and waves were included in the PWA. The
and states are clearly observed in the overall
effective mass distribution as well as in the amplitudes associated with
wave and waves respectively after partial wave decomposition. The observed
distributions in moments (averages of spherical harmonics) were compared to the
results from the PWA and the two are consistent. The distribution in
for individual waves associated with natural and
unnatural parity exchange in the -channel are consistent with Regge
phenomenology. Of particular interest in this study is the wave since this
leads to an exotic for the system. A wave is
present in the data, however attempts to describe the mass dependence of the
amplitude and phase motion with respect to the wave as a Breit-Wigner
resonance are problematic. This has implications regarding the existence of a
reported exotic meson decaying into with a mass
near 1.4 GeV.Comment: 19 pages, 29 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Exotic Meson Production in the System observed in the Reaction at 18 GeV/c
This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the
final state in collisions at 18GeV/c.
Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum
numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, in the decay
channel . The mass MeV/c^2 and
width MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent
with the parameters of the previously observed . The second
resonance with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical
models. In addition, the presence of is confirmed with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2
and a new state, , is observed with mass
MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2. The decay properties of
these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for
hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
Wavefunction statistics in open chaotic billiards
We study the statistical properties of wavefunctions in a chaotic billiard
that is opened up to the outside world. Upon increasing the openings, the
billiard wavefunctions cross over from real to complex. Each wavefunction is
characterized by a phase rigidity, which is itself a fluctuating quantity. We
calculate the probability distribution of the phase rigidity and discuss how
phase rigidity fluctuations cause long-range correlations of intensity and
current density. We also find that phase rigidities for wavefunctions with
different incoming wave boundary conditions are statistically correlated.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX; 1 figur
The antiferromagnetic phi4 Model, II. The one-loop renormalization
It is shown that the four dimensional antiferromagnetic lattice phi4 model
has the usual non-asymptotically free scaling law in the UV regime around the
chiral symmetrical critical point. The theory describes a scalar and a
pseudoscalar particle. A continuum effective theory is derived for low
energies. A possibility of constructing a model with a single chiral boson is
mentioned.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System
The exclusive reaction , at 18 GeV has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample
of 23~492 events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit
is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the wave, thus providing
evidence for a neutral exotic meson with , a mass of MeV, and a width of MeV. New
interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral system observed in
E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase
