    High Precision, High Spatial Resolution Analysis of Sulfur Isotopes by Laser Combustion of Natural Sulfide Minerals

    Laser induced combustion provides a powerful new technique for sulfur isotope measurements in natural sulfides. A high power continuous laser, focused through a modified microscope system onto a sulfide mineral target, produces highly localized heating. The laser beam is focused to a spot 25 μm in diameter at the sample surface. In the presence of low pressure oxygen, temperatures at the centre of the spot are sufficiently high to produce localized oxidation. Resultant SO2 is transferred to a gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometer, where the 34S can be measured to a precision better than 0.25‰. Sulfur isotopes are fractionated during the combustion by an amount which is reproducible, mineral specific and favours the lighter isotopes. The system is calibrated for given sulphide minerals and specified operating conditions. Laser combustion analysis of sulfur isotopes in pyrite chimneys from the Silvermines ore deposit in Ireland, illustrates the benefits of 100 μm spatial resolution possible with this technique

    Sarah Franklin in conversation with Silvia Posocco, Paul Boyce, and EJ Gonzalez-Polledo. In a conversation held in Cambridge in March 2018, Sarah Franklin reflects on the inspiration/influence that Marilyn Strathern’s work has exerted over her research trajectory and career at the intersections between anthropology, sociology, science studies and gender theory. This relation extends from their encounter at the University of Manchester in the late 1980s to Franklin’s editorial work on Strathern’s ‘lost manuscript’ originally written in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in 1974 and published as Before and After Gender in 2016. In the interview, Franklin unpacks how her engagement with Marilyn Strathern shaped her ethnographic approach to scientists’ work in the field of reproduction, notably assisted conception technologies as well as cloning, and, more recently human embryonic stem cell derivation. Franklin’s project has consistently focused on exploring the multiple dimensions of conception as this process is recontextualised through ethnographic practices of re-description. Franklin argues that conception is queer in the sense that it does not fit into normative narratives of what reproduction is like, but rather reveals genealogy as a normative fiction in social and scientific practice

    An immersed peridynamics model of fluid-structure interaction accounting for material damage and failure

    This paper develops and benchmarks an immersed peridynamics method to simulate the deformation, damage, and failure of hyperelastic materials within a fluid-structure interaction framework. The immersed peridynamics method describes an incompressible structure immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid. It expresses the momentum equation and incompressibility constraint in Eulerian form, and it describes the structural motion and resultant forces in Lagrangian form. Coupling between Eulerian and Lagrangian variables is achieved by integral transforms with Dirac delta function kernels, as in standard immersed boundary methods. The major difference between our approach and conventional immersed boundary methods is that we use peridynamics, instead of classical continuum mechanics, to determine the structural forces. We focus on non-ordinary state-based peridynamic material descriptions that allow us to use a constitutive correspondence framework that can leverage well characterized nonlinear constitutive models of soft materials. The convergence and accuracy of our approach are compared to both conventional and immersed finite element methods using widely used benchmark problems of nonlinear incompressible elasticity. We demonstrate that the immersed peridynamics method yields comparable accuracy with similar numbers of structural degrees of freedom for several choices of the size of the peridynamic horizon. We also demonstrate that the method can generate grid-converged simulations of fluid-driven material damage growth, crack formation and propagation, and rupture under large deformations

    Bilateral symmetry breaking in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity exhibiting optical tristability

    We show the existence of a region in the parameter space that defines the field dynamics in a Fabry-Perot cylindrical cavity, where three output stable stationary states of the light are possible for a given localized incident field. Two of these states do not preserve the bilateral (i.e. left-right) symmetry of the entire system. These broken-symmetry states are the high-transmission nonlinear modes of the system.     Response of the Agile Antechinus to Habitat Edge, Configuration and Condition in Fragmented Forest

    Habitat fragmentation and degradation seriously threaten native animal communities. We studied the response of a small marsupial, the agile antechinus Antechinus agilis, to several environmental variables in anthropogenically fragmented Eucalyptus forest in south-east Australia. Agile antechinus were captured more in microhabitats dominated by woody debris than in other microhabitats. Relative abundances of both sexes were positively correlated with fragment core area. Male and female mass-size residuals were smaller in larger fragments. A health status indicator, haemoglobin-haematocrit residuals (HHR), did not vary as a function of any environmental variable in females, but male HHR indicated better health where sites' microhabitats were dominated by shrubs, woody debris and trees other than Eucalyptus. Females were trapped less often in edge than interior fragment habitat and their physiological stress level, indicated by the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in peripheral blood, was higher where fragments had a greater proportion of edge habitat. The latter trend was potentially due to lymphopoenia resulting from stress hormone-mediated leukocyte trafficking. Using multiple indicators of population condition and health status facilitates a comprehensive examination of the effects of anthropogenic disturbances, such as habitat fragmentation and degradation, on native vertebrates. Male agile antechinus' health responded negatively to habitat degradation, whilst females responded negatively to the proportion of edge habitat. The health and condition indicators used could be employed to identify conservation strategies that would make habitat fragments less stressful for this or similar native, small mammals

    A multi-beam HI survey of the Virgo Cluster - two isolated HI clouds ?

    We have carried out a fully sampled large area (4∘×8∘4^{\circ} \times 8^{\circ}) 21cm \HI line survey of part of the Virgo cluster using the Jodrell Bank multi-beam instrument. The survey has a sensitivity some 3 times better than the standard HIJASS and HIPASS surveys. We detect 31 galaxies, 27 of which are well known cluster members. The four new detections have been confirmed in the HIPASS data and by follow up Jodrell Bank pointed observations. One object lies behind M86, but the other 3 have no obvious optical counter parts upon inspection of the digital sky survey fields. These 3 objects were mapped at Arecibo with a smaller \am{3}{6} HPBW and a 4 times better sensitivity than the Jodrell Bank data, which allow an improved determination of the dimensions and location of two of the objects, but surprisingly failed to detect the third. The two objects are resolved by the Arecibo beam giving them a size far larger than any optical images in the nearby field. To our mass limit of 5×1075 \times 10^{7} Δv50kms−1\frac{\Delta v}{50 km s^{-1}} M⊙M_{\odot} and column density limit of 3×10183 \times 10^{18} Δv50kms−1\frac{\Delta v}{50 km s^{-1}} atoms cm−2^{-2} these new detections represent only about 2% of the cluster atomic hydrogen mass. Our observations indicate that the \HI mass function of the cluster turns down at the low mass end making it very different to the field galaxy \HI mass function. This is quite different to the Virgo cluster optical luminosity function which is much steeper than that in the general field. Many of the sample galaxies are relatively gas poor compared to \HI selected samples of field galaxies, confirming the 'anaemic spirals' view of Virgo cluster late type galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Pharmacological management of unipolar depression

    Objective : To be used in conjunction with ‘Psychological management of unipolar depression’ [Lampe et al. Acta Psychiatr Scand 2013;127(Suppl. 443):24–37] and ‘Lifestyle management of unipolar depression’ [Berk et al. Acta Psychiatr Scand 2013;127(Suppl. 443):38–54]. To provide clinically relevant recommendations for the use of pharmacological treatments in depression derived from a literature review.Method : Using our previous Clinical Practice Guidelines [Malhi et al. Clinical practice recommendations for bipolar disorder. Acta Psychiatr Scand 2009;119(Suppl. 439):27–46] as a foundation, these clinician guidelines target key practical considerations when prescribing pharmacotherapy. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted using electronic database searches (PubMed, MEDLINE), and the findings have been synthesized and integrated alongside clinical experience.Results : The pharmacotherapy of depression is an iterative process that often results in partial and non-response. Beyond the initiation of antidepressants, the options within widely used strategies, such as combining agents and switching between agents, are difficult to proscribe because of the paucity of pertinent research. However, there is some evidence for second-line strategies, and a non-prescriptive algorithm can be derived that is based broadly on principles rather than specific steps.Conclusion : Depression is by its very nature a heterogeneous illness that is consequently difficult to treat. Invariably, situation-specific factors often play a significant role and must be considered, especially in the case of partial and non-response. Consulting with colleagues and trialling alternate treatment paradigms are essential strategies in the management of depression
