Isolated vacua in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories
An explicit proof of the existence of nontrivial vacua in the pure
supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with higher orthogonal SO(N), N>=7 or the
G_2 gauge group defined on a 3-torus with periodic boundary conditions is
given. Extra vacuum states are separated by an energy barrier from the
perturbative vacuum A_i=0 and its gauge copies.Comment: 8 pages, no figures, late
Glory revealed in disk-integrated photometry of Venus
Context. Reflected light from a spatially unresolved planet yields unique
insight into the overall optical properties of the planet cover. Glories are
optical phenomena caused by light that is backscattered within spherical
droplets following a narrow distribution of sizes; they are well known on Earth
as localised features above liquid clouds. Aims. Here we report the first
evidence for a glory in the disk-integrated photometry of Venus and, in turn,
of any planet. Methods. We used previously published phase curves of the planet
that were reproduced over the full range of phase angles with model predictions
based on a realistic description of the Venus atmosphere. We assumed that the
optical properties of the planet as a whole can be described by a uniform and
stable cloud cover, an assumption that agrees well with observational evidence.
Results. We specifically show that the measured phase curves mimic the
scattering properties of the Venus upper-cloud micron-sized aerosols, also at
the small phase angles at which the glory occurs, and that the glory contrast
is consistent with what is expected after multiple scattering of photons. In
the optical, the planet appears to be brighter at phase angles of 11-13 deg
than at full illumination; it undergoes a maximum dimming of up to 10 percent
at phases in between. Conclusions. Glories might potentially indicate spherical
droplets and, thus, extant liquid clouds in the atmospheres of exoplanets. A
prospective detection will require exquisite photometry at the small
planet-star separations of the glory phase angles.Comment: In press. Astronomy & Astrophysics. Letter to the Editor; 201
A model for conservative chaos constructed from multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates with a trap in 2 dimensions
To show a mechanism leading to the breakdown of a particle picture for the
multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates(BECs) with a harmonic trap in high
dimensions, we investigate the corresponding 2- nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger
equation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation) with use of a modified variational
principle. A molecule of two identical Gaussian wavepackets has two degrees of
freedom(DFs), the separation of center-of-masses and the wavepacket width.
Without the inter-component interaction(ICI) these DFs show independent regular
oscillations with the degenerate eigen-frequencies. The inclusion of ICI
strongly mixes these DFs, generating a fat mode that breaks a particle picture,
which however can be recovered by introducing a time-periodic ICI with zero
average. In case of the molecule of three wavepackets for a three-component
BEC, the increase of amplitude of ICI yields a transition from regular to
chaotic oscillations in the wavepacket breathing.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Neutrino mean free paths in spin-polarized neutron Fermi liquids
Neutrino mean free paths in magnetized neutron matter are calculated using
the Hartree-Fock approximation with effective Skyrme and Gogny forces in the
framework of the Landau Fermi Liquid Theory. It is shown that describing
nuclear interaction with Skyrme forces and for magnetic field strengths
, the neutrino mean free paths stay almost unchanged
at intermediate densities but they largely increase at high densities when they
are compared to the field-free case results. However the description with Gogny
forces differs from the previous and mean free paths stay almonst unchanged or
decrease at densities . This different behaviour can be explained
due to the combination of common mild variation of the Landau parameters with
both types of forces and the values of the nucleon effective mass and induced
magnetization of matter under presence of a strong magnetic field as described
with the two parametrizations of the nuclear interaction.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
La tercera persona: una propuesta antropolĂłgico-filosĂłfica delimitada frente al planteamiento sociolĂłgico
Recent approaches in social theory stress the significance of the third against the dominance of the dyadic paradigm. Arising in the dyad, the social normative order is objectified and thereafter personalized by the third, who also empirically attributes the recognition as person. Contrasting with this empirical standpoint, I propose a philosophical-anthropological approach according to which the tri-positional structure of sociality constitutes the transcendental condition of possibility of culture and of the âway of beingâ of the human being as person.
Seeking to enhance the bioenergy of municipal sludge: Effect of alkali pre-treatment and soluble organic matter supplementation
The aim of this research is to enhance the mesophilic anaerobic digestion of municipal sludge from
Cadiz-San Fernando (Spain) wastewater treatment plant at 20 days hydraulic retention time (HRT). Two
different strategies were tested to improve the process: co-digestion with the addition of soluble organic
matter (1% v/v); and alkali sludge pre-treatment (NaOH) prior to co-digestion with glycerine (1% v/v).
Methane production (MP) was substantially enhanced (from 0.36 ± 0.09 L CH4 l/d to 0.85 ± 0.16 L CH4
l/d), as was specific methane production (SMP) (from 0.20 ± 0.05 L CH4/g VS to 0.49 ± 0.09 L CH4/g VS)
when glycerine was added. The addition of glycerine does not seem to affect sludge stability, the
quality of the effluent in terms of pH and organic matter content, i.e. volatile fatty acids (VFA), soluble
organic matter and total volatile solid, or process stability (VFA/Alkalinity ratio < 0.4). Alkali
pre-treatment prior to co-digestion resulted in a high increase in soluble organic loading rates (more than
20%) and acidification yield (more than 50%). At 20 days HRT, however, it led to overload of the system and total destabilization of the mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and glycerine
Mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge with glycerine: Effect of solids retention time
The main objective of this paper is to examine the effect of the increase in organic loading rates (OLRs), by
reducing the solids retention time (SRT) from 20 d to 5 d, in single-phase mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of
sewage sludge with glycerine (1% v/v). It was experimentally confirmed that anaerobic co-digestion of these
biowastes under steady-state conditions can achieve an 85 ± 5% reduction in volatile fatty acids (VFA) at SRTs
of between 20 and 9 d, with a methane production yield of around 0.8 l CH4/l/d. Decreases in the SRT not only allow the sludge stability and biogas production to be maintained, but also lead to an increase in the waste that could be treated and lower operating costs. Therefore, mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and glycerin at a SRT lower than 20 d is possible and preferable due to being more economical and environmentally friendl
Interaction Effects on the Magneto-optical Response of Magnetoplasmonic Dimers
The effect that dipole-dipole interactions have on the magneto-optical (MO)
properties of magnetoplasmonic dimers is theoretically studied. The specific
plasmonic versus magnetoplasmonic nature of the dimer's metallic components and
their specific location within the dimer plays a crucial role on the
determination of these properties. We find that it is possible to generate an
induced MO activity in a purely plasmonic component, even larger than that of
the MO one, therefore dominating the overall MO spectral dependence of the
system. Adequate stacking of these components may allow obtaining, for specific
spectral regions, larger MO activities in systems with reduced amount of MO
metal and therefore with lower optical losses. Theoretical results are
contrasted and confirmed with experiments for selected structures
