Correlation of ignimbrites using characteristic remanent magnetization and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, Central Andes, Bolivia
Large ignimbrite flare-ups provide records of profound crustal modification during batholith formation at depth. The locations of source calderas and volumes and ages of the eruptions must be determined to develop models for the tectonomagmatic processes that occur during these events. Although high-precision isotopic ages of the ignimbrites are critical, less expensive and more rapid techniques, such as paleomagnetism, can extend the temporal information from dated outcrops. Paleomagnetic and rock magnetic data, including characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), from the Altiplano-Puna Volcanic Complex of the Central Andes reliably identify calderas and eight associated Mio-Pliocene ignimbrites. ChRM results indicate a larger between-site error for most ignimbrites, in comparison to within-site scatter. Part of this dispersion may be due to tumescence/detumescence associated with the caldera-forming eruptions, but most of the effect is probably due to the recording of paleosecular variation during cooling and vapor-phase crystallization of the thick ignimbrites. AMS data identify the source calderas for four ignimbrites and provide limits on possible post-emplacement rotations of the deposits. AMS data indicate significant topographic control on inferred flow directions, implying that the flows were dense and/or of low mobility
The Near-Horizon Limit of the Extreme Rotating d=5 Black Hole as a Homogenous Spacetime
We show that the spacetime of the near-horizon limit of the extreme rotating
d=5 black hole, which is maximally supersymmetric in N=2,d=5 supergravity for
any value of the rotation parameter j in [-1,1], is locally isomorphic to a
homogeneous non-symmetric spacetime corresponding to an element of the
1-parameter family of coset spaces SO(2,1)x SO(3)/SO(2)_j in which the subgroup
SO(2)_j is a combination of the two SO(2) subgroups of SO(2,1) and SO(3).Comment: Some points clarified and misprints corrected. Version to be

The Clementine Bistatic Radar Experiment
During the Clementine 1 mission, a bistatic radar experiment measured the magnitude and polarization of the radar echo versus bistatic angle, beta, for selected lunar areas. Observations of the lunar south pole yield a same-sense polarization enhancement around beta = 0. Analysis shows that the observed enhancement is localized to the permanently shadowed regions of the lunar south pole. Radar observations of periodically solar-illuminated lunar surfaces, including the north pole, yielded no such enhancement. A probable explanation for these differences is the presence of low-loss volume scatterers, such as water ice, in the permanently shadowed region at the south pole
Estimating daily and diurnal variations of illicit drug use in Hong Kong: A pilot study of using wastewater analysis in an Asian metropolitan city
The measurement of illicit drug metabolites in raw wastewater is increasingly being adopted as an approach to objectively monitor population-level drug use, and is an effective complement to traditional epidemiological methods. As such, it has been widely applied in western countries. In this study, we utilised this approach to assess drug use patterns over nine days during April 2011 in Hong Kong. Raw wastewater samples were collected from the largest wastewater treatment plant serving a community of approximately 3.5 million people and analysed for excreted drug residues including cocaine, ketamine, methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and key metabolites using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The overall drug use pattern determined by wastewater analysis was consistent with that have seen amongst people coming into contact with services in relation to substance use; among our target drugs, ketamine (estimated consumption: 1400-1600. mg/day/1000 people) was the predominant drug followed by methamphetamine (180-200. mg/day/1000 people), cocaine (160-180. mg/day/1000 people) and MDMA (not detected). The levels of these drugs were relatively steady throughout the monitoring period. Analysing samples at higher temporal resolution provided data on diurnal variations of drug residue loads. Elevated ratios of cocaine to benzoylecgonine were identified unexpectedly in three samples during the evening and night, providing evidence for potential dumping events of cocaine. This study provides the first application of wastewater analysis to quantitatively evaluate daily drug use in an Asian metropolitan community. Our data reinforces the benefit of wastewater monitoring to health and law enforcement authorities for strategic planning and evaluation of drug intervention strategies
A Note on Lie-Lorentz Derivatives
The definition of ``Lie derivative'' of spinors with respect to Killing
vectors is extended to all kinds of Lorentz tensors. This Lie-Lorentz
derivative appears naturally in the commutator of two supersymmetry
transformations generated by Killing spinors and vanishes for Vielbeins. It can
be identified as the generator of the action of isometries on supergravity
fields and its use for the calculation of supersymmetry algebras is revised and
