    Inclusive Photoproduction of η\eta Mesons on Nuclei and the in-medium properties of the S11_{11} Resonance

    A relativistic non-local model for the inclusive photoproduction of η\eta mesons from complex nuclei is introduced. The model is based on the dominance of the S11_{11}(1535) resonance. We compare the results of our calculations with the available data on inclusive cross sections for the nuclei C, Al and Cu. Assuming the resonance propagates freely in the nuclear medium, we find that the calculated angular distribution and energy dependence of the cross sections reproduce the data in a reasonable fashion. The present non-local model allows the inclusion of density dependent mass and width in the calculations. Including these in the calculations reveals that the presently available data do not show clear preference for the inclusion of such modifications of the properties of the S11_{11}(1535) in the nuclear medium.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

    Acute vigabatrin-phenobarbitone-interaction on exploratory behaviour of rats

    Vigabatrin (gamma-vinyl GABA) is an irreversible inh:bitor of the enzyme GABA-transaminase (GABA-T) which is responsible for the catabolism of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Vigabatrin causes a several fold increase in the levels of brain GABA. The current study investigated further the effects of acute treatment with vigabatrin (100 mgl kg, i.p.) & phenobarbitone sodium (20 mg/kg, i.p.)f alone and in combination, in two rat behavioural models of exploratory activity: the elevated plus-maze model of anxiety and the open field test of locomotor activity. A single injection of vigabatrin or phenobarbitone alone, produced anxiolytic effects in the elevated plus-maze test and increased locomotor activity in the open field test. In contrast, after the concomitant administration of both drugs, the anxiolytic effects were no longer produced in the elevated plus-maze. The increased locomotor activity was also diminished in both tests of exploratory behaviour. These results shed light on the GABA hypothesis of anxiety, insofar as the increased availability of GABA, resulting from either GABA-T inhibition (vigabatrin) or facilitation of GABA-mediated chloride channels (phenobarbitone), seems to result in an increased emotional reactivity which, however, subsequently disappears during combined treatment.peer-reviewe

    Optimal control of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers

    Seawater intrusion is one of the most serious environmental problems in many coastal regions all over the world. This is because mixing a small quantity of seawater with groundwater makes it unsuitable for use and can result in abandonment of aquifers. Therefore, seawater intrusion should be prevented or at least controlled to protect groundwater resources. This paper presents a new method for optimal control of seawater intrusion. The proposed method is based on a combination of abstraction of saline water near shoreline and recharge of aquifer using surface ponds. The source of water for the surface pond could be treated waste water or excess of desalinated brackish water (if any), etc. The variable density flow and solute transport model, SUTRA, is integrated with a Genetic Algorithm optimization tool in order to investigate the efficacy of different scenarios of the seawater intrusion control in an unconfined costal aquifer. The locations of the pond and the abstraction well in relation to the shoreline, depth of abstraction well and the rates of abstraction and recharge are considered as the main decision variables of the optimization model, which aims to minimize the costs of construction and operation of the abstraction wells and recharge ponds as well as the salt concentrations in the aquifer. Comparison is made between the results of the proposed method and other methods of seawater intrusion control. The results indicate that the proposed method is efficient in controlling seawater intrusion. This proposed strategy can be considered as a powerful tool for cost-effective management of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers

    Three-to-five-phase matrix converter using carrier-based PWM technique

    <p><strong>Abstract</strong> - This paper proposes a simple Carrier-Based PWM (CBPWM) technique to control the three- to five-phase Direct Matrix Converter (3×5 DMC). The proposed technique uses the indirect modulation approach to control the 3×5 DMC such as a three-phase bidirectional rectifier followed by five-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). Based on this approach, it is possible to synthesize the desired five-phase output voltages with sinusoidal three-phase input currents and unity input power factor. A CBPWM method is suggested for each stage independently including both linear and overmodulation operating modes. By the proposed technique, in both operating modes, the maximum possible overall Voltage Transfer Ratio (VTR) are achieved. Moreover, this technique allows the input power factor to be controlled by controlling the input current displacement angle. The feasibility of the proposed technique has been verified by a series of simulation and experimental results based on Matlab/Simulink and dSPACE-DS1104 platform. The results show that, a sinusoidal output and input waveforms can be achieved with a maximum possible VTR in the linear region. However, in the overmodulation region, a maximum possible VTR is achieved at the cost of some distortion of output and input waveforms. Therefore, this technique can be used for the application where a higher VTR is essential.</p

    Horizon area bound and MOTS stability in locally rotationally symmetric solutions

    In this paper, we study the stability of marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTS), foliating horizons of the form r=X(τ)r=X(\tau), embedded in locally rotationally symmetric class II perfect fluid spacetimes. An upper bound on the area of stable MOTS is obtained. It is shown that any stable MOTS of the types considered in these spacetimes must be strictly stably outermost, that is, there are no MOTS ``outside" of and homologous to S\mathcal{S}. Aspects of the topology of the MOTS, as well as the case when an extension is made to imperfect fluids, are discussed. Some non-existence results are also obtained.     The development and application of composite complexity models and a relative complexity metric in a software maintenance environment

    A great deal of effort is now being devoted to the study, analysis, prediction, and minimization of software maintenance expected cost, long before software is delivered to users or customers. It has been estimated that, on the average, the effort spent on software maintenance is as costly as the effort spent on all other software costs. Software design methods should be the starting point to aid in alleviating the problems of software maintenance complexity and high costs. Two aspects of maintenance deserve attention: (1) protocols for locating and rectifying defects, and for ensuring that noe new defects are introduced in the development phase of the software process; and (2) protocols for modification, enhancement, and upgrading. This article focuses primarily on the second aspect, the development of protocols to help increase the quality and reduce the costs associated with modifications, enhancements, and upgrades of existing software. This study developed parsimonious models and a relative complexity metric for complexity measurement of software that were used to rank the modules in the system relative to one another. Some success was achieved in using the models and the relative metric to identify maintenance-prone modules

    Analysis and Modeling of a Two-Phase Jet Pump of a Flow Boiling Test Facility for Aerospace Applications

    Jet pumps are devices capable of pumping fluids to a higher pressure employing a nozzle/diffuser/mixing chamber combination. A primary fluid is usually allowed to pass through a converging-diverging nozzle where it can accelerate to supersonic speeds at the nozzle exit. The relatively high kinetic energy that the primary fluid possesses at the nozzle exit is accompanied by a low pressure region in order to satisfy Bernoulli's equation. The low pressure region downstream of the nozzle exit permits a secondary fluid to be entrained into and mixed with the primary fluid in a mixing chamber located downstream of the nozzle. Several combinations may exist in terms of the nature of the primary and secondary fluids in so far as whether they are single or two-phase fluids. Depending on this, the jet pump may be classified as gas/gas, gas/liquid, liquid/liquid, two-phase/liquid, or similar combinations. The mixing chamber serves to create a homogeneous single-phase or two-phase mixture which enters a diffuser where the high kinetic energy of the fluid is converted into pressure energy. If the fluid mixture entering the diffuser is in the supersonic flow regime, a normal shock wave usually develops inside the diffuser. If the fluid mixture is one that can easily change phase, a condensation shock would normally develop. Because of the overall rise in pressure in the diffuser as well as the additional rise in pressure across the shock layer, condensation becomes more likely. Associated with the pressure rise across the shock is a velocity reduction from the supersonic to the subsonic range. If the two-phase flow entering the diffuser is predominantly gaseous with liquid droplets suspended in it, it will transform into a predominantly liquid flow containing gaseous bubbles (bubbly flow) somewhere in the diffuser. While past researchers have been able to model the two-phase flow jet pump using the one-dimensional assumption with no shock waves and no phase change, there is no research known to the authors apart from that of Anand (1992) which accounted for condensation shocks. One of the objectives of this research effort is to develop a comprehensive model in which the effects of phase slip and inter-phase heat transfer as well as the wall friction and shock waves are accounted for. While this modeling effort is predominantly analytical in nature and is primarily intended to provide a parametric understanding of the jet pump performance under different operating scenarios, another parallel effort employing a commercial CFD code is also implemented. The latter effort is primarily intended to model an axisymmetric counterpart of the problem in question. The viability of using the CFD code to model a two-phase flow jet pump will be assessed by attempting to recreate some of the existing performance data of similar jet pumps. The code will eventually be used to generate the jet pump performance characteristics of several scenarios involving jet pump geometries as well as flow regimes in order to be able to determine an optimum design which would be suitable for a two-phase flow boiling test facility at NASA-Marshall. Because of the extensive nature of the analytical model developed, the following section will only provide very brief highlights of it, while leaving the details to a more complete report submitted to the NASA colleague. This report will also contain some of the simulation results obtained using the CFD code

    SPACE VECTOR PWM TECHNIQUE FOR THREE- TO SEVEN-PHASE AC-TO-AC POWER CONVERTERS: ANALYSIS AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATIONS

    This paper presents Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control technique for three to seven-phase ac-to-ac power converters. These proposed PWM techniques are based on Indirect Space Vector Modulation (ISVM), which model the converter as two independent stages perform rectification and inversion stages. Two schemes of ISVM are proposed. The first scheme maximizes the voltage transfer ratio (VTR) of the converter but it produces unwanted low order harmonics. The second scheme generates sinusoidal output voltage waveforms; the cost is a reduction in the VTR of this configuration in linear mode. The viability of the proposed technique is proved using experimental results
