Radiation modeling in the Earth and Mars atmospheres using LRO/CRaTER with the EMMREM Module
Abstract We expand upon the efforts of Joyce et al. (2013), who computed the modulation potential at the Moon using measurements from the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) instrument on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft along with data products from the Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module (EMMREM). Using the computed modulation potential, we calculate galactic cosmic ray (GCR) dose and dose equivalent rates in the Earth and Mars atmospheres for various altitudes over the course of the LRO mission. While we cannot validate these predictions by directly comparable measurement, we find that our results conform to expectations and are in good agreement with the nearest available measurements and therefore may be used as reasonable estimates for use in efforts in risk assessment in the planning of future space missions as well as in the study of GCRs. PREDICCS (Predictions of radiation from REleASE, EMMREM, and Data Incorporating the CRaTER, COSTEP, and other solar energetic particles measurements) is an online system designed to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive resource on the radiation environments of the inner heliosphere. The data products shown here will be incorporated into PREDICCS in order to further this effort and daily updates will be made available on the PREDICCS website (http://prediccs.sr.unh.edu). Josephson coupled Ising pairing induced in suspended MoS2 bilayers by double-side ionic gating
Superconductivity in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is characterized by !sing-type pairing induced via a strong Zeeman-type spin-orbit coupling. When two transition metal dichalcogenides layers are coupled, more exotic superconducting phases emerge, which depend on the ratio of !sing-type protection and interlayer coupling strength. Here, we induce superconductivity in suspended MoS2 bilayers and unveil a coupled superconducting state with strong !sing-type spin-orbit coupling. Gating the bilayer symmetrically from both sides by ionic liquid gating varies the interlayer interaction and accesses electronic states with broken local inversion symmetry while maintaining the global inversion symmetry. We observe a strong suppression of the Ising protection that evidences a coupled superconducting state. The symmetric gating scheme not only induces superconductivity in both atomic sheets but also controls the Josephson coupling between the layers, which gives rise to a dimensional crossover in the bilayer.</p
A cross-sectional analysis of radiographic ankle osteoarthritis frequency and associated factors: The Johnston County osteoarthritis project
Objective. Because there are no epidemiologic data regarding the frequency of ankle osteoarthritis (OA) in a general population, we sought to analyze this disabling condition in a large, well-characterized, community-based cohort of older individuals. Methods. Cross-sectional data, including ankle radiographs, were from the most recent data collection (2013-2015) of the Johnston County OA Project. Radiographic ankle OA (rAOA) was defined as a Kellgren-Lawrence arthritis grading scale of ≥ 2 on weight-bearing lateral and mortise radiographs. The presence of pain, aching, or stiffness in the ankles as well as history of ankle injury (limiting ability to walk for at least 2 days) were assessed. Chi-square statistics (categorical variables) and Student t tests (continuous variables) were used to compare all participant characteristics by rAOA status. Joint-based logistic regression models with generalized estimating equations were used to examine associations of rAOA and covariates of interest [age, body mass index (BMI), sex, race, ankle symptoms, and injury history]. Results. Of 864 participants with available data, 68% were women, 34% were African American, with a mean age of 72 years and BMI of 31 kg/m2. Nearly 7% of this sample had rAOA. Increasing age, high BMI, history of ankle injury, and presence of ankle symptoms were all independently associated with greater odds of having rAOA; no significant differences were seen by sex or race. Conclusion. The frequency of rAOA was higher than estimates generally quoted in the literature. While injury was an important contributor, other factors such as age, BMI, and symptoms were also significantly associated with rAOA
A cross-sector analysis of human and organisational factors in the deployment of data-driven predictive maintenance
Domains such as utilities, power generation, manufacturing and transport are increasingly turning to data-driven tools for management and maintenance of key assets. Whole ecosystems of sensors and analytical tools can provide complex, predictive views of network asset performance. Much research in this area has looked at the technology to provide both sensing and analysis tools. The reality in the field, however, is that the deployment of these technologies can be problematic due to user issues, such as interpretation of data or embedding within processes, and organisational issues, such as business change to gain value from asset analysis. 13 experts from the field of remote condition monitoring, asset management and predictive analytics across multiple sectors were interviewed to ascertain their experience of supplying data-driven applications. The results of these interviews are summarised as a framework based on a predictive maintenance project lifecycle covering project motivations and conception, design and development, and operation. These results identified critical themes for success around having a target or decision-led, rather than data-led, approach to design; long-term resourcing of the deployment; the complexity of supply chains to provide data-driven solutions and the need to maintain knowledge across the supply chain; the importance of fostering technical competency in end-user organisations; and the importance of a maintenance-driven strategy in the deployment of data-driven asset management. Emerging from these themes are recommendations related to culture, delivery process, resourcing, supply chain collaboration and industry-wide cooperation
Association of Foot Symptoms With Decreased Time to All-Cause Mortality: The Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project
OBJECTIVE: Adults with foot symptoms (ie, pain, aching, or stiffness) may be at increased risk of reduced time to all-cause mortality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether foot symptoms are independently associated with all-cause mortality in older adults. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 2613 participants from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project, a longitudinal population-based cohort of adults 45years of age and older. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline to determine presence of foot symptoms and covariable status. Baseline walking speed was measured via an 8-foot walk test. To examine the association of foot symptoms with time to mortality, hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Cox regression models, adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: We observed 813 deaths over 4 to 14.5years of follow-up. At baseline, 37% of participants had foot symptoms, mean age was 63years, mean body mass index was approximately 31 kg/m2 , 65% were women, and 33% were Black. Moderate to severe foot symptoms were associated with reduced time to mortality after adjustment for demographics, comorbidities, physical activity, and knee and hip symptoms (HR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.09-1.54). Importantly, this association was not modified by walking speed or diabetes. CONCLUSION: Individuals with foot symptoms had an increased hazard of all-cause mortality compared with those with no foot symptoms. These effects were independent of key confounders and were not moderated by walking speed. Effective interventions to identify and manage at least moderate foot symptoms may reduce the risk of decreased time to mortality
Cybersecurity for children: an investigation into the application of social media
The paper discusses cybersecurity for children (particularly teenagers) and focuses on Social Media’s impact using a theoretical approach. Many social media users are unaware of their Cybersecurity in Social Media and all-round digital privacy and do not understand the importance of developing privacythrough taking both digital and physical measures. We identify seven categories of hacking motivations through multimedia platforms: Emotions, Financial gains, Entertainment, Proficiency for jobs, Hacktivism, Espionage, and Cyber-warfare, particularly for children. As vulnerable people, they can be the principal victims. We explore various methods used for hacking, such as Sexting, Facebook depression, and Influence on buying advertisements. In our findings, we demonstrate that the most critical protection method is to fully understand the digital footprint left behind and its possible consequences. The users should know this as a self-protection mechanism to mitigate security issues before problems occur. It means adopting the same mindset and attitude of protecting oneself in the online world as in the real world
A population Monte Carlo scheme with transformed weights and its application to stochastic kinetic models
This paper addresses the problem of Monte Carlo approximation of posterior
probability distributions. In particular, we have considered a recently
proposed technique known as population Monte Carlo (PMC), which is based on an
iterative importance sampling approach. An important drawback of this
methodology is the degeneracy of the importance weights when the dimension of
either the observations or the variables of interest is high. To alleviate this
difficulty, we propose a novel method that performs a nonlinear transformation
on the importance weights. This operation reduces the weight variation, hence
it avoids their degeneracy and increases the efficiency of the importance
sampling scheme, specially when drawing from a proposal functions which are
poorly adapted to the true posterior.
For the sake of illustration, we have applied the proposed algorithm to the
estimation of the parameters of a Gaussian mixture model. This is a very simple
problem that enables us to clearly show and discuss the main features of the
proposed technique. As a practical application, we have also considered the
popular (and challenging) problem of estimating the rate parameters of
stochastic kinetic models (SKM). SKMs are highly multivariate systems that
model molecular interactions in biological and chemical problems. We introduce
a particularization of the proposed algorithm to SKMs and present numerical

Generalised joint hypermobility and knee joint hypermobility: prevalence, knee joint symptoms and health-related quality of life in a Danish adult population
Aim: Several biomechanical factors, such as knee joint hypermobility (KJH), are suggested to play a role in the etiology of knee joint symptoms and knee osteoarthritis. Nevertheless, the prevalence or consequences of KJH solely or included in the classification of generalized joint hypermobility (GJHk) is unknown for a general population. Therefore, the objectives were to report the prevalence of self-reported GJHk and KJH, as well as the association of these conditions to knee joint symptoms, severity and duration of symptoms, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a Danish adult population. Method: This study is a cross-sectional population-based survey of 2056 Danish adults. Respondents received online questionnaires of GJHk and KJH, knee joint symptoms, the severity and duration of these, as well as HRQoL. Results: Total response rate was 49% (n = 1006). The prevalence of self-reported GJHk and KJH was 13% and 23%, mostly representing women. More than half of the respondents with GJHk and KJH had knee joint symptoms. The odds for reporting knee joint symptoms, severity of knee joint symptoms and duration of knee joint symptoms were twice as high for respondents with GJHk and KJH. Respondents with GJHk and KJH reported lower HRQoL. Conclusion: GJHk and KJH were frequently reported in the Danish adult population, mostly in women. Respondents with GJHk and KJH were two times more likely to report knee joint-related symptoms such as pain, reduced performance of usual activity and lower HRQoL. The impact of these conditions on HRQoL is comparable with knee osteoarthritis
