    Neural Mechanisms Underlying Paradoxical Performance for Monetary Incentives Are Driven by Loss Aversion

    Employers often make payment contingent on performance in order to motivate workers. We used fMRI with a novel incentivized skill task to examine the neural processes underlying behavioral responses to performance-based pay. We found that individuals’ performance increased with increasing incentives; however, very high incentive levels led to the paradoxical consequence of worse performance. Between initial incentive presentation and task execution, striatal activity rapidly switched between activation and deactivation in response to increasing incentives. Critically, decrements in performance and striatal deactivations were directly predicted by an independent measure of behavioral loss aversion. These results suggest that incentives associated with successful task performance are initially encoded as a potential gain; however, when actually performing a task, individuals encode the potential loss that would arise from failure

    Dispersal of larval and juvenile seabream: Implications for Mediterranean marine protected areas

    In the marine context, information about dispersal is essential for the design of networks of marine protected areas (MPAs). Generally, most of the dispersal of demersal fishes is thought to be driven by the transport of eggs and larvae in currents, with the potential contribution of dispersal in later life stages relatively minimal.Using otolith chemistry analyses, we estimate dispersal patterns across a spatial scale of approximately 180. km at both propagule (i.e. eggs and larvae) and juvenile (i.e. between settlement and recruitment) stages of a Mediterranean coastal fishery species, the two-banded seabream Diplodus vulgaris. We detected three major natal sources of propagules replenishing local populations in the entire study area, suggesting that propagule dispersal distance extends to at least 90. km. For the juvenile stage, we detected dispersal of up to 165. km. Our work highlights the surprising and significant role of dispersal during the juvenile life stages as an important mechanism connecting populations. Such new insights are crucial for creating effective management strategies (e.g. MPAs and MPA networks) and to gain support from policymakers and stakeholders, highlighting that MPA benefits can extend well beyond MPA borders, and not only via dispersal of eggs and larvae, but also through movement by juveniles

    hMENA11a contributes to HER3-mediated resistance to PI3K inhibitors in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells.

    Human Mena (hMENA), an actin regulatory protein of the ENA/VASP family, cooperates with ErbB receptor family signaling in breast cancer. It is overexpressed in high-risk preneoplastic lesions and in primary breast tumors where it correlates with HER2 overexpression and an activated status of AKT and MAPK. The concomitant overexpression of hMENA and HER2 in breast cancer patients is indicative of a worse prognosis. hMENA is expressed along with alternatively expressed isoforms, hMENA11a and hMENAΔv6 with opposite functions. A novel role for the epithelial-associated hMENA11a isoform in sustaining HER3 activation and pro-survival pathways in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells has been identified by reverse phase protein array and validated in vivo in a series of breast cancer tissues. As HER3 activation is crucial in mechanisms of cell resistance to PI3K inhibitors, we explored whether hMENA11a is involved in these resistance mechanisms. The specific hMENA11a depletion switched off the HER3-related pathway activated by PI3K inhibitors and impaired the nuclear accumulation of HER3 transcription factor FOXO3a induced by PI3K inhibitors, whereas PI3K inhibitors activated hMENA11a phosphorylation and affected its localization. At the functional level, we found that hMENA11a sustains cell proliferation and survival in response to PI3K inhibitor treatment, whereas hMENA11a silencing increases molecules involved in cancer cell apoptosis. As shown in three-dimensional cultures, hMENA11a contributes to resistance to PI3K inhibition because its depletion drastically reduced cell viability upon treatment with PI3K inhibitor BEZ235. Altogether, these results indicate that hMENA11a in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells sustains HER3/AKT axis activation and contributes to HER3-mediated resistance mechanisms to PI3K inhibitors. Thus, hMENA11a expression can be proposed as a marker of HER3 activation and resistance to PI3K inhibition therapies, to select patients who may benefit from these combined targeted treatments. hMENA11a activity could represent a new target for antiproliferative therapies in breast cancer

    Noninvasive patch resonator-based measurements on cultural heritage materials

    In this work, a noninvasive microwave-based system for monitoring water content in stone materials used in Cultural Heritage structures is presented. By placing a planar resonator in contact with the considered stone sample, through reflection scattering parameter measurements, it is possible to associate the resonant frequency of the resonator to the moisture content of the stone sample. In this way, an experimental relationship between resonant frequency and moisture content can be obtained. Experimental tests are carried out on two types of materials, namely gentile and carparo stones: which are typically found in Cultural Heritage structures in Southern Italy and they are particularly affected by deterioration and decay phenomena. Measurements were performed for five levels of water content of the stone samples, and the empirical relationship between each considered level of water content and the corresponding measured quantity were derived. The obtained results demonstrate that this solution appears robust

    Single-Center Experience with Simultaneous Mural Aortic Thrombosis and Peripheral Obstructive Disease in Pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 Era

    Background: Mural aortic thrombosis associated with chronic peripheral obstruction of the lower limbs is an unusual event. Repeated embolism of instability aortic mural thrombosis caused acute limb ischemia (Rutherford 2 classification) in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). We report a single-center experience for patients with transmural aortic thrombosis and peripheral artery disease. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of 54 patients with aortic mural thrombus disease with PAD presentation, treated at our center between 2013 and 2022. Results: Thirty patients (six with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection) underwent hybrid or staged treatment for an aortic lesion and for lower limb ischemia, by the placement of an endovascular aortic stent graft and a femoro-distal or a popliteal-distal bypass graft. The remaining 24 cases were only subjected to an intravascular treatment of the thoracic or abdominal aorta. Transient renal failure occurred in three patients. No embolic events were detected during the procedures. Aortic-related mortality was reported in just one patient who died from multiple organ failure. There was an embolic stroke in one patient with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection, three major amputations in patients with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection and no aortic-related mortality. Conclusions: Stent coverage of complex aortic lesions, alone or in association with a distal bypass graft, supports this approach in a variety of settings.     A Study of the B-V Colour Temperature Relation

    We attempt to construct a B-V colour temperature relation for stars in the least model dependent way employing the best modern data. The fit we obtained with the form Teff = Teff((B-V)0,[Fe/H],log g) is well constrained and a number of tests show the consistency of the procedures for the fit. Our relation covers from F0 to K5 stars with metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.5 to +0.3 for both dwarfs and giants. The residual of the fit is 66 K, which is consistent with what are expected from the quality of the present data. Metallicity and surface gravity effects are well separated from the colour dependence. Dwarfs and giants match well in a single family of fit, differing only in log g. The fit also detects the Galactic extinction correction for nearby stars with the amount E(B-V) = 0.26 +/-0.03 mag/kpc. Taking the newly obtained relation as a reference we examine a number of B-V colour temperature relations and atmosphere models available in the literature. We show the presence of a systematic error in the colour temperature relation from synthetic calculations of model atmospheres; the systematic error across K0 to K5 dwarfs is 0.04-0.05 mag in B-V, which means 0.25-0.3 mag in Mv for the K star range. We also argue for the error in the temperature scale used in currently popular stellar population synthesis models; synthetic colours from these models are somewhat too blue for aged elliptical galaxies. We derive the colour index of the sun (B-V)sun = 0.627 +/-0.018, and discuss that redder colours (e.g., 0.66-0.67) often quoted in the literature are incompatible with the colour-temperature relation.Comment: AASLaTeX (aaspp4.sty),36 pages (13 figures included), submitted to Astronomical Journal, replaced (typo in author name

    A ML-based Approach to Enhance Metrological Performance of Wearable Brain-Computer Interfaces

    In this paper, the adoption of Machine Learning (ML) classifiers is addressed to improve the performance of highly wearable, single-channel instrumentation for Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). The proposed BCI is based on the classification of Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs). In this setup, Augmented Reality Smart Glasses are used to generate and display the flickering stimuli for the SSVEP elicitation. An experimental campaign was conducted on 20 adult volunteers. Successively, a Leave-One-Subject-Out Cross Validation was performed to validate the proposed algorithm. The obtained experimental results demonstrate that suitable ML-based processing strategies outperform the state-of-the-art techniques in terms of classification accuracy. Furthermore, it was also shown that the adoption of an inter-subjective model successfully led to a decrease in the 3-σ uncertainty: this can facilitate future developments of ready-to-use systems

    Bioactive composition and sensory evaluation of innovative spaghetti supplemented with free or α-cyclodextrin chlatrated pumpkin oil extracted by supercritical CO2

    The feasibility of producing durum wheat pasta enriched with a lipophilic phytocomplex, extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2), from ripe pumpkin, as free oil or as ready-to-mix oil/α-cyclodextrins (α-CDs)powder, was explored. Four types of pasta were prepared: (i)control spaghetti (S-CTRL); (ii)spaghetti supplemented with α-CDs (S-α-CD); (iii)spaghetti supplemented with pumpkin oil (S-Oil)and (iv)spaghetti supplemented with the pumpkin oil/α-CD powder (S-Oil/α-CD). The chemical, antioxidant, textural and sensory attributes of the different pasta were evaluated and compared. S-Oil and S-Oil/α-CD spaghetti were significantly enriched with phytosterols, squalene, carotenoids, tocochromanols and unsaturated fatty acids. Spaghetti containing α-CDs were slightly improved in terms of fiber content. Oil chlatration increased the stability of some bioactives during pasta production and ameliorated poor textural and sensory characteristics of the cooked spaghetti compared with S-Oil sample. S-Oil/α-CD spaghetti might be accepted by customers, if the potential health benefits were also explained

    Cardiac surgery practice during the COVID-19 outbreak: A regionwide survey

    Background: Health systems worldwide have been overburdened by the "COVID-19 surge". Consequently, strategies to remodulate non-COVID medical and surgical care had to be developed. Knowledge of the impact of COVID surge on cardiac surgery practice is mainstem. Present study aims to evaluate the regional practice pattern during lockdown in Campania. Methods: A multicenter regional observational 26-question survey was conducted, including all adult cardiac surgery units in Campania, Italy, to assess how surgical practice has changed during COVID-19 national lockdown. Results: All centers adopted specific protocols for screening patients and personnel. A significant reduction in the number of dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) beds (-30.0%±38.1%, range: 0-100%) and cardiac operating rooms (-22.2%±26.4%, range: 0-50%) along with personnel relocation to other departments was disclosed (anesthesiologists -5.8%±11.1%, range: 0-33.3%; perfusionists -5.6%±16.7%, range: 0-50%; nurses -4.8%±13.2%, range: 0-40%; cardiologists -3.2%±9.5%, range: 0-28.6%). Cardiac surgeons were never reallocated to other services. Globally, we witnessed dramatically lower adult cardiac surgery case volumes (335 vs. 667 procedures, P<0.001), as institutions and surgeons followed guidelines to curtail non-urgent operations. Conclusions: This regional survey demonstrates major changes in practice as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this respect, this experience might lead to the development of permanent systems-based plans for future pandemic and may effectively help policy decision making when prioritizing healthcare resource reallocation during and after the pandemic
