Production of the Smallest QED Atom: True Muonium (mu^+ mu^-)
The "true muonium" (mu^+ mu-) and "true tauonium" (tau^+ tau^-) bound states
are not only the heaviest, but also the most compact pure QED systems. The
rapid weak decay of the tau makes the observation of true tauonium difficult.
However, as we show, the production and study of true muonium is possible at
modern electron-positron colliders.Comment: 4 pages, ReVTeX, 4 eps figures; minor wording changes and reordering

Parity violating target asymmetry in electron - proton scattering
We analyze the parity-violating (PV) components of the analyzing power in
elastic electron-proton scattering and discuss their sensitivity to the strange
quark contributions to the proton weak form factors. We point out that the
component of the analyzing power along the momentum transfer is independent of
the electric weak form factor and thus compares favorably with the PV beam
asymmetry for a determination of the strangeness magnetic moment. We also show
that the transverse component could be used for constraining the strangeness
radius. Finally, we argue that a measurement of both components could give
experimental information on the strangeness axial charge.Comment: 24 pages, Latex, 5 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Energy and decay width of the pi-K atom
The energy and decay width of the pi-K atom are evaluated in the framework of
the quasipotential-constraint theory approach. The main electromagnetic and
isospin symmetry breaking corrections to the lowest-order formulas for the
energy shift from the Coulomb binding energy and for the decay width are
calculated. They are estimated to be of the order of a few per cent. We display
formulas to extract the strong interaction S-wave pi-K scattering lengths from
future experimental data concerning the pi-K atom.Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, uses Axodra
Observation of πK-atoms with DIRAC-II
We present evidence for the first observation of electromagnetically bound π ± K ∓ -pairs (πK-atoms) with the DIRAC-II experiment at the CERN-PS. The πK-atoms are produced by the 24 GeV/c proton beam in a thin Pt-target and the dissociated π ± and K ∓ -mesons analyzed in a two-arm magnetic spectrometer. The observed enhancement at low relative momentum corresponds to the production of 173±54 πK-atoms. The mean life of πK-atoms is related to the s-wave πK-scattering lengths. From these first data we derive a lower limit for the mean life of 1.5 fs at 84% confidence level
