The effects of leaf litter treatments, post-harvest urea and omission of early season fungicide sprays on the overwintering of apple scab on Bramley’s Seedling grown in a maritime environment.
peer-reviewedThe theory that orchards with zero or low levels of apple scab post harvest do not
need scab protection at the start of the next growing season was evaluated under Irish
conditions. In addition, a range of post-harvest orchard sanitation practices (application
of urea to rot overwintering leaves, mowing the orchard or total leaf removal in
February) were also evaluated. Due to the high summer rainfall in Ireland (compared
to all other European apple growing areas) and the severe susceptibility of the apple
cultivar Bramley’s Seedling to scab (Venturia inaequalis), neither clean orchards in
the autumn nor sanitation practices were sufficient to eliminate the requirement for
full fungicide protection programmes at the start of the following growing season.
Post harvest applications of urea proved difficult due to late harvesting of pollinator
fruit for the juice market and wet weather. Total removal of leaf litter from plots
prior to the commencement of growth did not significantly reduce disease incidence.
Regardless of orchard cleanliness in autumn, missing the first fungicide application
in the spring always reduced yield.This work was funded by the Department

The VIRMOS deep imaging survey: I. overview and survey strategy
This paper presents the CFH12K-VIRMOS survey: a deep B, V, R and I imaging
survey in four fields totalling more than 17 deg^2, conducted with the 30x40
arcmin^2 field CFH-12K camera. The survey is intended to be a multi-purpose
survey used for a variety of science goals, including surveys of very high
redshift galaxies and weak lensing studies.
Four high galactic latitude fields, each 2x2 deg^2, have been selected along
the celestial equator: 0226-04, 1003+01, 1400+05, and 2217+00. The 16 deg^2 of
the "wide" survey are covered with exposure times of 2h, 1.5h, 1h, 1h, while
the 1.3x1 deg^2 area of the "deep" survey at the center of the 0226-04 field is
covered with exposure times of 7h, 4.5h, 3h, 3h, in B,V,R and I respectively.
The data is pipeline processed at the Terapix facility at the Institut
d'Astrophysique de Paris to produce large mosaic images. The catalogs produced
contain the positions, shape, total and aperture magnitudes for the 2.175
million objects. The depth measured (3sigma in a 3 arc-second aperture) is
I_{AB}=24.8 in the ``Wide'' areas, and I_{AB}=25.3 in the deep area. Careful
quality control has been applied on the data as described in joint papers.
These catalogs are used to select targets for the VIRMOS-VLT Deep Survey, a
large spectroscopic survey of the distant universe (Le F\`evre et al., 2003).
First results from the CFH12K-VIRMOS survey have been published on weak lensing
(e.g. van Waerbeke & Mellier 2003).
Catalogs and images are available through the VIRMOS database environment
under Oracle ({\tt http://www.oamp.fr/virmos}). They will be open for general

Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea home range and habitat use during the non-breeding season in Assam, India
India is an important non-breeding ground for migratory waterfowl in the Central Asian Flyway. Millions of birds visit wedands across the country, yet information on their distribution, abundance, and use of resources is rudimentary at best. Limited information suggests that populations of several species of migratory ducks are declining due to encroachment of wedand habitats largely by agriculture and industry. The development of conservation strategies is stymied by a lack of ecological information on these species. We conducted a preliminary assessment of the home range and habitat use of Ruddy Shelduck Tadornaferruginea in the northeast Indian state of Assam. Seven Ruddy Shelducks were fitted with solar-powered Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite transmitters, and were tracked on a daily basis during the winter of 2009-2010. Locations from all seven were used to describe habitat use, while locations from four were used to quantify their home range, as the other three had too few locations (<30) for home range estimation. A Brownian Bridge Movement Model (BBMM), used to estimate home ranges, found that the Ruddy Shelduck had an average core use area (i.e. the contour defining 50% of positions) of 40 km 2 (range = 22-87 km2) and an average home range (95% contour) of 610 km2 (range = 222-1,550 km2). Resource Selection Functions (RSF), used to describe habitat use, showed that the birds frequented riverine wetlands more than expected, occurred on grasslands and shrublands in proportion to their availability, and avoided woods and cropland habitats. The core use areas for three individuals (75%) were on the Brahmaputra River, indicating their preference for riverine habitats. Management and protection of riverine habitats and nearby grasslands may benefit conservation efforts for the Ruddy Shelduck and waterfowl species that share these habitats during the non-breeding seaso
An Invisible Quantum Tripwire
We present here a quantum tripwire, which is a quantum optical interrogation
technique capable of detecting an intrusion with very low probability of the
tripwire being revealed to the intruder. Our scheme combines interaction-free
measurement with the quantum Zeno effect in order to interrogate the presence
of the intruder without interaction. The tripwire exploits a curious nonlinear
behaviour of the quantum Zeno effect we discovered, which occurs in a lossy
system. We also employ a statistical hypothesis testing protocol, allowing us
to calculate a confidence level of interaction-free measurement after a given
number of trials. As a result, our quantum intruder alert system is robust
against photon loss and dephasing under realistic atmospheric conditions and
its design minimizes the probabilities of false positives and false negatives
as well as the probability of becoming visible to the intruder.Comment: Improved based on reviewers comments; 5 figure
XMM-Newton Surveys of the Canada-France Redshift Survey Fields - III: The Environments of X-ray Selected AGN at 0.4<z<0.6
The environmental properties of a sample of 31 hard X-ray selected AGN are
investigated, from scales of 500 kpc down to 30 kpc, and are compared to a
control sample of inactive galaxies. The AGN all lie in the redshift range
0.4<z<0.6. The accretion luminosity-density of the Universe peaks close to this
redshift range, and the AGN in the sample have X-ray luminosities close to the
knee in the hard X-ray luminosity function, making them representative of the
population which dominated this important phase of energy conversion.
Using both the spatial clustering amplitude and near neighbour counts it is
found that the AGN have environments that are indistinguishable from normal,
inactive galaxies over the same redshift range and with similar optical
properties. Typically, the environments are of sub-cluster richness, in
contrast to similar studies of high-z quasars, which are often found in
clusters with comparable richness to the Abell R>=0 clusters.
It is suggested that minor mergers with low mass companions is a likely
candidate for the mechanism by which these modest luminosity AGN are fuelled.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by MNRA
Sub-millimeter galaxies as progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies
Three billion years after the big bang (at redshift z=2), half of the most
massive galaxies were already old, quiescent systems with little to no residual
star formation and extremely compact with stellar mass densities at least an
order of magnitude larger than in low redshift ellipticals, their descendants.
Little is known about how they formed, but their evolved, dense stellar
populations suggest formation within intense, compact starbursts 1-2 Gyr
earlier (at 3<z<6). Simulations show that gas-rich major mergers can give rise
to such starbursts which produce dense remnants. Sub-millimeter selected
galaxies (SMGs) are prime examples of intense, gas-rich, starbursts. With a
new, representative spectroscopic sample of compact quiescent galaxies at z=2
and a statistically well-understood sample of SMGs, we show that z=3-6 SMGs are
consistent with being the progenitors of z=2 quiescent galaxies, matching their
formation redshifts and their distributions of sizes, stellar masses and
internal velocities. Assuming an evolutionary connection, their space densities
also match if the mean duty cycle of SMG starbursts is 42 (+40/-29) Myr
(consistent with independent estimates), which indicates that the bulk of stars
in these massive galaxies were formed in a major, early surge of
star-formation. These results suggests a coherent picture of the formation
history of the most massive galaxies in the universe, from their initial burst
of violent star-formation through their appearance as high stellar-density
galaxy cores and to their ultimate fate as giant ellipticals.Comment: ApJ (in press
