Disconnected and unplugged: experiences of technology induced anxieties and tensions while traveling
The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of being disconnected while traveling for technologically savvy travelers. This paper will explore how new technologies ‘separate’ travelers from the physical and embodied travel experience, and how experiences and tensions caused by being disconnected or unplugged are negotiated. For this study, travelers’ experiences were elicited through a series of online interviews conducted primarily through email and Facebook. Pearce and Gretzel (2012)’s technology-induced tensions and recent literature on internet/technology addiction provide a conceptual framework for the analysis
Gravitational Wave Bursts from Collisions of Primordial Black Holes in Clusters
The rate of gravitational wave bursts from the mergers of massive primordial
black holes in clusters is calculated. Such clusters of black holes can be
formed through phase transitions in the early Universe. The central black holes
in clusters can serve as the seeds of supermassive black holes in galactic
nuclei. The expected burst detection rate by the LISA gravitational wave

Mechanisms of rolling contact spalling
The results of a study aimed at analyzing the mechanical material interactions responsible for rolling contact spalling of the 440 C steel, high pressure oxygen turbopump bearings are presented. A coupled temperature displacement finite element analysis of the effects of friction heating under the contact is presented. The contact is modelled as a stationary, heat generating, 2 dimensional indent in an elastic perfectly plastic half-space with heat fluxes up to 8.6 x 10000 KW/m sq comparable to those generated in the bearing. Local temperatures in excess of 1000 C are treated. The calculations reveal high levels of residual tension after the contact is unloaded and cools. Efforts to promote Mode 2/Mode 3 fatigue crack growth under cyclic torsion in hardened 440 C steel are described. Spalls produced on 440 C steel by a 3 ball/rod rolling contact testing machine were studied with scanning microscopy. The shapes of the cyclic, stress strain hysteresis loops displayed by hardened 440 C steel in cyclic torsion at room temperature are defined for the plastic strain amplitudes encountered in rolling/sliding contact. Open Questions in Classical Gravity
We discuss some outstanding open questions regarding the validity and
uniqueness of the standard second order Newton-Einstein classical gravitational
theory. On the observational side we discuss the degree to which the realm of
validity of Newton's Law of Gravity can actually be extended to distances much
larger than the solar system distance scales on which the law was originally
established. On the theoretical side we identify some commonly accepted but
actually still open to question assumptions which go into the formulating of
the standard second order Einstein theory in the first place. In particular, we
show that while the familiar second order Poisson gravitational equation (and
accordingly its second order covariant Einstein generalization) may be
sufficient to yield Newton's Law of Gravity they are not in fact necessary. The
standard theory thus still awaits the identification of some principle which
would then make it necessary too. We show that current observational
information does not exclusively mandate the standard theory, and that the
conformal invariant fourth order theory of gravity considered recently by
Mannheim and Kazanas is also able to meet the constraints of data, and in fact
to do so without the need for any so far unobserved non-luminous or dark

Clinical impact of double protease inhibitor boosting with Lopinavir/Ritonavir and Amprenavir as part of salvage antiretroviral therapy
Purpose: Double protease inhibitor (PI) boosting is being explored as a new strategy in salvage antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. However, if a negative drug interaction leads to decreased drug levels of either or both PIs, double PI boosting could lead to decreased virologic response. A negative drug interaction has been described between amprenavir (APV) and lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r). This observational cohort study assessed the virologic impact of the addition of APV to a salvage ARV regimen, which also contains LPV/r, compared to a regimen containing LPV/r alone. Method: Patients initiated on a salvage ARV regimen that included LPV/r obtained from the expanded access program in Toronto, Canada, were evaluated. APV (600-1,200 mg bid) was added at the discretion of the treating physician. Results: Using multivariate Cox proportional hazards models, we found that the addition of APV to a LPV/r-containing salvage regimen was not significantly associated with time to virologic suppression (< 50 copies/mL; adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 0.75, p = .12) or with time to virologic rebound (adjusted HR = 1.46, p = .34). Those patients who received higher doses of APV had an increased chance of virologic suppression (p = .03). In a subset of 27 patients, the median LPV Ctrough was significantly lower in patients receiving APV (p = .04), and the median APV Ctrough was reduced compared to reported controls. Conclusion: Our data do not support an additional benefit in virologic reduction of double boosting with APV and LPV/r relative to LPV/r alone in salvage ARV therapy. Our study's limitations include its retrospective nature and the imbalance between the two groups potentially confounding the results. Although these factors were adjusted for in the multivariate analysis, a prospective randomized controlled trial is warranted to confirm our findings
Closed Path Integrals and Renormalisation in Quantum Mechanics
We suggest a closed form expression for the path integral of quantum
transition amplitudes. We introduce a quantum action with renormalized
parameters. We present numerical results for the potential. The

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment Earth Occultation Technique
An Earth orbiting detector sensitive to gamma ray photons will see step-like
occultation features in its counting rate when a gamma ray point source crosses
the Earth's limb. This is due to the change in atmospheric attenuation of the
gamma rays along the line of sight. In an uncollimated detector, these
occultation features can be used to locate and monitor astrophysical sources
provided their signals can be individually separated from the detector
background. We show that the Earth occultation technique applied to the Burst
and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory
(CGRO) is a viable and flexible all-sky monitor in the low energy gamma ray and
hard X-ray energy range (20 keV - 1 MeV). The method is an alternative to more
sophisticated photon imaging devices for astronomy, and can serve well as a
cost-effective science capability for monitoring the high energy sky.
Here we describe the Earth occultation technique for locating new sources and
for measuring source intensity and spectra without the use of complex
background models. Examples of transform imaging, step searches, spectra, and
light curves are presented. Systematic uncertainties due to source confusion,
detector response, and contamination from rapid background fluctuations are
discussed and analyzed for their effect on intensity measurements. A sky
location-dependent average systematic error is derived as a function of
galactic coordinates. The sensitivity of the technique is derived as a function
of incident photon energy and also as a function of angle between the source
and the normal to the detector entrance window. Occultations of the Crab Nebula
by the Moon are used to calibrate Earth occultation flux measurements

Mechanism for the Suppression of Intermediate-Mass Black Holes
A model for the formation of supermassive primordial black holes in galactic
nuclei with the simultaneous suppression of the formation of intermediate-mass
black holes is presented. A bimodal mass function for black holes formed
through phase transitions in a model with a "Mexican hat" potential has been
found. The classical motion of the phase of a complex scalar field during
inflation has been taken into account. Possible observational manifestations of
primordial black holes in galaxies and constraints on their number are

The Sexual Use of a Social Networking Site: The Case of Pup Twitter
This article examines how Twitter has been adopted and used by a sexual subculture in distinct ways. Drawing on interviews with 26 gay and bisexual men based in the UK who identify as ‘pups’, it demonstrates how a kinky sexual subculture exists on a social networking site in new and innovative ways, adapting various elements of Twitter to form a unique subculture that I call ‘Pup Twitter’. Engaging with debates about social trends related to sexuality, as well as contemporary understandings of social networking sites, the study documents how this subcultural sexual community, while predating Twitter, has adopted online methods to enhance communication, engagement, and even visibility. The intersection of sexuality and social networking sites is an area ripe for further study, and this article develops empirical and conceptual ways to examine this issue in the future
Differentially Private Model Selection with Penalized and Constrained Likelihood
In statistical disclosure control, the goal of data analysis is twofold: The
released information must provide accurate and useful statistics about the
underlying population of interest, while minimizing the potential for an
individual record to be identified. In recent years, the notion of differential
privacy has received much attention in theoretical computer science, machine
learning, and statistics. It provides a rigorous and strong notion of
protection for individuals' sensitive information. A fundamental question is
how to incorporate differential privacy into traditional statistical inference
procedures. In this paper we study model selection in multivariate linear
regression under the constraint of differential privacy. We show that model
selection procedures based on penalized least squares or likelihood can be made
differentially private by a combination of regularization and randomization,
and propose two algorithms to do so. We show that our private procedures are
consistent under essentially the same conditions as the corresponding
non-private procedures. We also find that under differential privacy, the
procedure becomes more sensitive to the tuning parameters. We illustrate and
