Towards Risk Estimation in Automated Vehicles Using Fuzzy Logic
As vehicles get increasingly automated, they need to properly evaluate different situations and assess threats at run-time. In this scenario automated vehicles should be able to evaluate risks regarding a dynamic environment in order to take proper decisions and modulate their driving behavior accordingly. In order to avoid collisions, in this work we propose a risk estimator based on fuzzy logic which accounts for risk indicators regarding (1) the state of the driver, (2) the behavior of other vehicles and (3) the weather conditions. A scenario with two vehicles in a car-following situation was analyzed, where the main concern is to avoid rear-end collisions. The goal of the presented approach is to effectively estimate critical states and properly assess risk, based on the indicators chosen. This work was supported by the AMASS project (H2020-

Disentangling the initiation from the response in joint attention: An eye-tracking study in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders
Joint attention (JA), whose deficit is an early risk marker for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has two dimensions: (1) responding to JA and (2) initiating JA. Eye-tracking technology has largely been used to investigate responding JA, but rarely to study initiating JA especially in young children with ASD. The aim of this study was to describe the differences in the visual patterns of toddlers with ASD and those with typical development (TD) during both responding JA and initiating JA tasks. Eye-tracking technology was used to monitor the gaze of 17 children with ASD and 15 age-matched children with TD during the presentation of short video sequences involving one responding JA and two initiating JA tasks (initiating JA-1 and initiating JA-2). Gaze accuracy, transitions and fixations were analyzed. No differences were found in the responding JA task between children with ASD and those with TD, whereas, in the initiating JA tasks, different patterns of fixation and transitions were shown between the groups. These results suggest that children with ASD and those with TD show different visual patterns when they are expected to initiate joint attention but not when they respond to joint attention. We hypothesized that differences in transitions and fixations are linked to ASD impairments in visual disengagement from face, in global scanning of the scene and in the ability to anticipate object's action
Gastrointestinal stromal tumour in Meckel's diverticulum

Abstract

Background

Meckel's Diverticulum is the most commonly encountered congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in approximately 2% of the population. Occasionally Meckel's diverticulum harbors neoplasms.

Case presentation

A 65 year old gentleman, presented with a pelvic mass. On exploratory laparotomy, it turned out to be gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) arising from Meckel's diverticulum. Short history and review of literature are discussed.

Conclusion

Neoplasms occurring from Meckel's diverticulum, even though rare, should be considered as differential diagnosis of pelvic masses arising from bowel, wherever imaging modalities fail to give a definitive diagnosis.</p
Intestinal endometriosis: role of laparoscopy in diagnosis and treatment
Endometriosis is a disease in women in which endometrial tissue is found in abnormal
sites, frequently in the peritoneum and pelvic viscera. Endometriosis may therefore affect
the genital organs, particularly the left ovary, or it may occur elsewhere in the abdomen,
principally the digestive tract in the sigmoid-rectum. The difficulty of prompt diagnosis
of nongenital endometriotic lesions, whose symptoms are usually nonspecific, and the
inadequacy of traditional diagnostic approaches mean the disease has time to progress. A
case report is used here to show the use of laparoscopy with immediate histological
examination for the prompt diagnosis and intraoperative treatment of intestinal endometriosis.
For patients with extragenital endometriosis, laparoscopic resection offers immediate
postoperative advantages but also gives gradual relief of symptoms and in some
cases improves reproductive capacity; there is also less formation of adhesions in this
disease, which by definition tends to cause them, often making a second look indispensable
