    A witness for coherent electronic oscillations in ultrafast spectroscopy

    We report a conceptually straightforward witness that isolates coherent electronic oscillations from their vibronic counterparts in nonlinear optical spectra of molecular aggregates: Coherent oscillations as a function of waiting time in broadband pump/broadband probe spectra correspond to coherent electronic oscillations. Oscillations in individual peaks of 2D electronic spectra do not necessarily yield this conclusion. Our witness is simpler to implement than quantum process tomography and potentially resolves a long-standing controversy on the character of oscillations in ultrafast spectra of photosynthetic light harvesting systems.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, plus Supplementary Information.     Fluctuations of spin transport through chaotic quantum dots with spin-orbit coupling

    As devices to control spin currents using the spin-orbit interaction are proposed and implemented, it is important to understand the fluctuations that spin-orbit coupling can impose on transmission through a quantum dot. Using random matrix theory, we estimate the typical scale of transmitted charge and spin currents when a spin current is injected into a chaotic quantum dot with strong spin-orbit coupling. These results have implications for the functioning of the spin transistor proposed by Schliemann, Egues, and Loss. We use a density matrix formalism appropriate for treating arbitrary input currents and indicate its connections to the widely used spin-conductance picture. We further consider the case of currents entangled between two leads, finding larger fluctuations.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Spin polarized current generation from quantum dots without magnetic fields

    An unpolarized charge current passing through a chaotic quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling can produce a spin polarized exit current without magnetic fields or ferromagnets. We use random matrix theory to estimate the typical spin polarization as a function of the number of channels in each lead in the limit of large spin-orbit coupling. We find rms spin polarizations up to 45% with one input channel and two output channels. Finite temperature and dephasing both suppress the effect, and we include dephasing effects using a new variation of the third lead model. If there is only one channel in the output lead, no spin polarization can be produced, but we show that dephasing lifts this restriction.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     Increased shedding of HU177 correlates with worse prognosis in primary melanoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Increased levels of cryptic collagen epitope HU177 in the sera of melanoma patients have been shown to be associated with thicker primary melanomas and with the nodular histologic subtype. In this study, we investigate the association between HU177 shedding in the sera and clinical outcome in terms of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Serum samples from 209 patients with primary melanoma prospectively enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group at the New York University Langone Medical Center (mean age = 58, mean thickness = 2.09 mm, stage I = 136, stage II = 41, stage III = 32, median follow-up = 54.9 months) were analyzed for HU177 concentration using a validated ELISA assay. HU177 serum levels at the time of diagnosis were used to divide the study cohort into two groups: low and high HU177. DFS and OS were estimated by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and the log-rank test was used to compare DFS and OS between the two HU177 groups. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were employed to examine the independent effect of HU177 category on DFS and OS.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HU177 sera concentrations ranged from 0-139.8 ng/ml (mean and median of 6.2 ng/ml and 3.7 ng/ml, respectively). Thirty-eight of the 209 (18%) patients developed recurrences, and 34 of the 209 (16%) patients died during follow-up. Higher HU177 serum level was associated with an increased rate of melanoma recurrence (p = 0.04) and with increasing mortality (p = 0.01). The association with overall survival remained statistically significant after controlling for thickness and histologic subtype in a multivariate model (p = 0.035).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Increased shedding of HU177 in the serum of primary melanoma patients is associated with poor prognosis. Further studies are warranted to determine the clinical utility of HU177 in risk stratification compared to the current standard of care.</p

    Efficient spin filter using multi-terminal quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction

    We propose a multi-terminal spin filter using a quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction. First, we formulate the spin Hall effect (SHE) in a quantum dot connected to three leads. We show that the SHE is significantly enhanced by the resonant tunneling if the level spacing in the quantum dot is smaller than the level broadening. We stress that the SHE is tunable by changing the tunnel coupling to the third lead. Next, we perform a numerical simulation for a multi-terminal spin filter using a quantum dot fabricated on semiconductor heterostructures. The spin filter shows an efficiency of more than 50% when the conditions for the enhanced SHE are satisfied
