    Dealing with temporariness: generational effects on temporary agency workers’ employment relationships

    Purpose: A major trend in the changing nature of work is the increasing use of temporary workers. Although common among students, older employees have joined the ranks of temporary workers as they extend their work lives. Temporary workers tend to report lower affective commitment and consequently poorer work outcomes. However, different generations of workers may conceive temporary work differently from each other. The purpose of this paper is to explore how different generations of temporary workers, respond to human resource practices (HRP), which in turn influences their affective commitment and work performance. Design/methodology/approach: The sample is comprised of 3,876 temporary agency workers (TAWs) from seven temporary employment agencies in Portugal. The authors undertook multiple group SEM analyses to test a moderated mediation model that accounts for TAWs’ affective commitment (toward the agency and the client company) across three generations (Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials) in the relationship between human resources practices and overall perceived performance. Findings: After controlling for gender, age and tenure, the authors find generational differences in the perceptions of HRP and perceived performance. The results support the moderator effect of generations in the direct and indirect relationships – through both affective commitments – between TAWs’ perceived HRP and perceived performance. Research limitations/implications: The cross-sectional design limits the possibility to make causal inferences. Originality/value: This study contributes to a better understanding of how different generations respond to temporary employment relationships.     Association Between Supratotal Glioblastoma Resection and Patient Survival: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    - BACKGROUND: Gross total resection (GTR) of the contrast enhancing (CE) area will improve the survival of patients with glioblastoma (GBM). However, GBM can infiltrate into the brain parenchyma, beyond the CE margins. It remains unclear whether resection beyond the CE area (supratotal resection [SPTR]) can improve survival without causing additional neurological deficits. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to study the association between SPTR and overall survival of patients of GBM. - METHODS: Embase, PubMed, and other literature databases were searched for eligible studies until August 2018. Studies involving patients with GBM that had compared SPTR with GTR were included in the present study. The main outcome was overall survival, presented as hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and median overall survival differences with the 95% CIs. - RESULTS: The meta-analysis, which included 6 studies and 1168 unique patients with GBM, showed that compared with GTR, SPTR of GBM resulted in a 53% lower risk of mortality at any time during follow-up (HR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.31e 0.72; P [ 0.0005). The median overall survival of the SPTR group was 6.4 months (95% CI, 3.2e9.7) longer than the GTR group (P [ 0.0001). Reports on postoperative deficits were limited, and the quality of evidence was moderate to very low. - CONCLUSIONS: Compared with GTR, SPTR of GBM resulted in a lower risk of mortality and longer median overall survival. However, the quality of evidence of the available studies was poor. Therefore, it remains unclear whether SPTR is safe and actually improves the survival of patients with GBM. Future prospective trials and a standardized definition of SPTR are needed

    Rethinking ‘top‐down’ and ‘bottom‐up’ roles of top and middle managers in organizational change: implications for employee support

    In this study we integrate insights from ‘top‐down’ and ‘bottom‐up’ traditions in organizational change research to understand employees’ varying dispositions to support change. We distinguish between change initiation and change execution roles and identify four possible role configurations in which top managers (TMs) and middle managers (MMs) can feature in change. We contend that both TMs and MMs can play change initiation and/or change execution roles, TMs and MMs have different strengths and limitations for taking on different change roles, and their relative strengths and limitations are compounded or attenuated based on the specific configuration of change roles. We subsequently hypothesize employee support for change in relation to different TM‐MM change role configurations. Our findings show that change initiated by TMs does not engender above‐average level of employee support. However, change initiated by MMs engenders above‐average level of employee support, and even more so, if TMs handle the change execution

    “It would be pretty immoral to choose a random algorithm”: Opening up algorithmic interpretability and transparency

    In recent years, significant concerns have arisen regarding the increasing pervasiveness of algorithms and the impact of automated decision-making in our lives. Particularly problematic is the lack of transparency surrounding the development of these algorithmic systems and their use. It is often suggested that in order to make algorithms more fair, they should be made more transparent; but exactly how this can be achieved remains unclear. This paper reports on empirical work conducted to open up algorithmic interpretability and transparency. We conducted discussion-based experiments centred around a limited resource allocation scenario which required participants to select their most and least preferred algorithms in a particular context. Our results revealed diversity in participant preferences but consistency in the ways that participants invoked normative concerns and the importance of context when accounting for their selections. These findings demonstrate the value in pursuing algorithmic interpretability and transparency whilst also highlighting the complexities surrounding their accomplishment

    Seminal fluid is an important part of the ejaculate of internally fertilizing animals. This fluid contains substances that nourish and activate sperm for successful fertilization. Additionally, it contains components that influence female physiology to further enhance fertilization success of the sperm donor, possibly beyond the recipient's optimum. Although evidence for such substances abounds, few studies have unraveled their identities, and focus has been exclusively on separate-sex species. We present the first detailed study into the seminal fluid composition of a hermaphrodite (Lymnaea stagnalis). Eight novel peptides and proteins were identified from the seminal-fluid-producing prostate gland and tested for effects on oviposition, hatching and consumption. The gene for the protein found to suppress egg mass production, Ovipostatin, was sequenced, thereby providing the first fully-characterized seminal fluid substance in a simultaneous hermaphrodite. Thus, seminal fluid peptides and proteins have evolved and can play a crucial role in sexual selection even when the sexes are combined

    Evaluation of simulated CO<sub>2</sub> power plant plumes from six high-resolution atmospheric transport models

    Global anthropogenic CO2 sources are dominated by power plants and large industrial facilities. Quantifying the emissions of these point sources is therefore one of the main goals of the planned constellation of anthropogenic CO2 monitoring satellites (CO2M) of the European Copernicus program. Atmospheric transport models may be used to study the capabilities of such satellites through observing system simulation experiments and to quantify emissions in an inverse modelling framework. How realistically the CO2 plumes of power plants can be simulated and how strongly the results may depend on model type and resolution, however, is not well known due to a lack of observations available for benchmarking. Here, we use the unique data set of aircraft in-situ and remote sensing observations collected during the CoMet measurement campaign down-wind of the coal fired power plants at BeƂchatów in Poland and Jaenschwalde in Germany in 2018 to evaluate the simulations of six different atmospheric transport models
