A Navaho Myth: The Hero Twins (A Psychoanalytic Evaluation)

THE MYTH. Changing Woman (or Turquoise Woman) gives birth to twins, the Sun being their father. The older boy was Nayenesgani the Slayer, and the younger was called Child of Water. The Sun warned his wife Changing Woman to hide her sons from the giant Yeitso. She dug a hole in the floor, and every time she heard Yeitso coming she put them in it and covered the hole with a flat stone. The great giant came often for he was in love with her and jealous of the Sun, but she kept the little ones hidden. The children grow up quickly and go to seek their father, the Sun. He had a wonderful palace in the east where White Shell Woman was his wife. When they arrive he cruelly attempts to kill his own offspring. Finally, when he fails to kill them. the Sun gives them the straight lightning and the crooked lightning. Then they kill Yeitso, the Giant, who was the Sun\u27s eldest child. The gigantic stature of Yeitso and the diminutive size of his antagonists are emphasized. But it is really the Sun who kills the giant and when the elder brother rushes in, he does so with his father\u27s stone sword . . . When they had killed the big giant Yeitso, they carried his scalp as a trophy and hung it on a tree, reporting to their mother. While relating the encounter to her, they swooned and lay unconscious whereupon she prepared a concoction of herbs struck by lightning, sprinkled them with it, and shot a spruce and pine arrow over their bodies, thus reviving them (Roheim 1950:321, 319)

Novel Method of Measuring Electron Positron Colliding Beam Parameters

    Get PDF
Through the simultaneous measurement of the transverse size as a function of longitudinal position, and the longitudinal distribution of luminosity, we are able to measure the βy∗\beta_y^\ast (vertical envelope function at the collision point), vertical emittance, and bunch length of colliding beams at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR). This measurement is possible due to the significant ``hourglass'' effect at CESR and the excellent tracking resolution of the CLEO detector.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to NIM

Two-photon absorption and broadband optical limiting with bis-donor stilbenes

    Get PDF
Large two-photon absorptivities are reported for symmetrical bis-donor stilbene derivatives with dialkylamino or diphenylamino groups. These molecules exhibit strong optical limiting of nanosecond pulses over a broad spectral range in the visible. Relative to bis(di-n-butylamino)stilbene, bis(diphenylamino)stilbene exhibits a 90-nm red shift of its optical limiting band but only a minimal shift of ~13 nm of its lowest one-photon electronic absorption band. Mixtures of these compounds offer an unprecedented combination of broad optical limiting bandwidth and high linear transparency

The MAHB, the Culture Gap, and Some Really Inconvenient Truths

Humanity's failure to take adequate actions to stem a likely environmental collapse calls for extraordinary measures to understand and alter human behavior, argues Paul Ehrlich. His Millennium Assessment of Human Behavior (MAHB) aims to chart the path to a sustainable future

    Wilms tumor: "State-of-the-art" update, 2016

Despite an impressive increase in survival rate over the past decades, there is still a need to improve the survival of specific subgroups of Wilms tumor (anaplastic, metastatic, and bilateral) and to decrease the late effects of treatment in terms of renal function and heart toxicity. We aim to explore new areas of improvement, from diagnosis to treatment: in the field of radiology the increased use of MRI and exploration of its diffusion-weighted imaging capabilities to predict WT histology at diagnosis and for preoperative assessment; in biology the emergence of new biomarkers that could be integrated into the decision-making process; and surgical techniques with more accurate indication of nephron-sparing surgery that is no longer reserved for bilateral WT and the minimally invasive approach. The long-term outcome of patients with WT should thus be a strong indicator of the improvement in adapting and personalizing the treatment to each individual

Performance measures for object detection evaluation

    Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We propose a new procedure for quantitative evaluation of object detection algorithms. The procedure consists of a matching stage for finding correspondences between reference and output objects, an accuracy score that is sensitive to object shapes as well as boundary and fragmentation errors, and a ranking step for final ordering of the algorithms using multiple performance indicators. The procedure is illustrated on a building detection task where the resulting rankings are consistent with the visual inspection of the detection maps. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
