On the robustness of acoustic black hole spectra
We study the robustness of the spectrum emitted by an acoustic black hole by
considering series of stationary flows that become either subsonic or
supersonic, i.e. when the horizon disappears. We work with the superluminal
Bogoliubov dispersion of Bose--Einstein condensates. We find that the spectrum
remains remarkably Planckian until the horizon disappears. When the flow is
everywhere supersonic, new pair creation channels open. This will be the

Copulas, multivariate risk-neutral distributions and implied dependence functions
In this paper, we use copulas to define multivariate risk-neutral distributions. We can then derive general pricing formulas for multi-asset options and best possible bounds with given volatility smiles. Finally, we apply the copula framework to define ‘forward-looking ’ indicators of the dependence function between asset returns.
Black hole lasers, a mode analysis
We show that the black hole laser effect discovered by Corley & Jacobson
should be described in terms of frequency eigenmodes that are spatially bound.
The spectrum contains a discrete and finite set of complex frequency modes
which appear in pairs and which encode the laser effect. In addition, it
contains real frequency modes that form a continuous set when space is
infinite, and which are only elastically scattered, i.e., not subject to any
Bogoliubov transformation. The quantization is straightforward, but the
calculation of the asymptotic fluxes is rather involved. When the number of
complex frequency modes is small, our expressions differ from those given
earlier. In particular, when the region between the horizons shrinks, there is
a minimal distance under which no complex frequency mode exists, and no
radiation is emitted. Finally, we relate this effect to other dynamical
instabilities found for rotating black holes and in electric fields, and we

Black hole lasers in Bose-Einstein condensates
We consider elongated condensates that cross twice the speed of sound. In the
absence of periodic boundary conditions, the phonon spectrum possesses a
discrete and finite set of complex frequency modes that induce a laser effect.
This effect constitutes a dynamical instability and is due to the fact that the
supersonic region acts as a resonant cavity. We numerically compute the complex
frequencies and density-density correlation function. We obtain patterns with
very specific signatures. In terms of the gravitational analogy, the flows we
consider correspond to a pair of black hole and white hole horizons, and the
laser effect can be conceived as a self-amplified Hawking radiation. This is
verified by comparing the outgoing flux at early time with the standard black

Impaired aerobic exercise adaptation in children and adolescents with craniopharyngioma is associated with hypothalamic involvement
OBJECTIVE: Many patients treated for craniopharyngioma (CP) complain of a relative incapacity for physical activity. Whether this is due to an objective decrease in adaptation to exercise is unclear. We assessed exercise tolerance in children with surgically treated CP and appropriate pituitary hormone replacement therapy compared with healthy controls and we examined the potential relationships with hypothalamic involvement, GH replacement, and the catecholamine deficiency frequently observed in these subjects. DESIGN AND METHODS: Seventeen subjects (12 males and five females) with CP and 22 healthy controls (14 males and eight females) aged 15.3+/-2.5 years (7.3-18 years) underwent a standardized cycle ergometer test. Maximum aerobic capacity was expressed as the ratio of VO(2max) to fat-free mass (VO(2max)/FFM), a measure independent of age and fat mass in children. RESULTS: VO(2max)/FFM was 20% lower in children with CP compared with controls (P<0.05), even after adjustment for gender. Children with hypothalamic involvement (n=10) had a higher percentage of fat mass (P<0.05) than those without hypothalamic involvement (n=7) and lower VO(2max)/FFM (P<0.05), whereas children without hypothalamic involvement had VO(2max)/FFM close to that of controls (P>0.05). GH treatment was associated with a significant positive effect on aerobic capacity (P<0.05) only in the absence of hypothalamic involvement. No relationship was found between exercise capacity parameters and daily urine epinephrine excretion or epinephrine peak response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. CONCLUSIONS: Children with CP have a decrease in aerobic capacity mainly related to hypothalamic involvement. The hypothalamic factors altering aerobic capacity remain to be determined
Joint inversion of P-wave velocity and density, application to La Soufrière of Guadeloupe hydrothermal system
International audienceWe present the result of a 3-D gravity and P-wave traveltime joint inversion applied to the hydrothermal system of La Soufri'ere of Guadeloupe. The joint inversion process is used here to overcome the different resolution limitations attached to the two data sets. P-wave traveltimes were obtained from three active seismic surveys that were conducted from 2001 to 2007. Gravity data collected during a microgravity campaign is described in a companion paper. We use a joint inversion process based on a Bayesian formulation and a deterministic iterative approach. The coupling between slowness and density is introduced through a supplementary constraint in the misfit function that tries to minimize the distance between parameter values and a theoretical relationship. This relationship is derived from measurements on samples representative of Mt Pel'ee of Martinique and La Soufri'ere volcanoes. We chose a grid discretization that leads to an under-determined problem that we regularize using spatial exponential covariance between the nodes parameters. Our results are compared to geophysical electromagnetic results obtained using resistivity and VLF surveys. They confirm the presence of highly contrasted dense/fast and light/slow zones in La Soufri'ere dome and crater basement. Our images suggest however that some non-conductive zones may be massive andesite bodies rather than argilized zones, and that these bodies may have deeper roots than hypothesized

Assessment of Dissolved Oxygen Mitigation at Hydropower Dams Using an Integrated Hydrodynamic/Water Quality/Fish Growth Model
Dissolved oxygen (DO) in rivers is a common environmental problem associated with hydropower projects. Approximately 40% of all FERC-licensed projects have requirements to monitor and/or mitigate downstream DO conditions. Most forms of mitigation for increasing DO in dam tailwaters are fairly expensive. One area of research of the Department of Energy's Hydropower Program is the development of advanced turbines that improve downstream water quality and have other environmental benefits. There is great interest in being able to predict the benefits of these modifications prior to committing to the cost of new equipment. In the case of turbine replacement or modification, there is a need for methods that allow us to accurately extrapolate the benefits derived from one or two turbines with better design to the replacement or modification of all turbines at a site. The main objective of our study was to demonstrate a modeling approach that integrates the effects of flow and water quality dynamics with fish bioenergetics to predict DO mitigation effectiveness over long river segments downstream of hydropower dams. We were particularly interested in demonstrating the incremental value of including a fish growth model as a measure of biological response. The models applied are a suite of tools (RMS4 modeling system) originally developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority for simulating hydrodynamics (ADYN model), water quality (RQUAL model), and fish growth (FISH model) as influenced by DO, temperature, and available food base. We parameterized a model for a 26-mile reach of the Caney Fork River (Tennessee) below Center Hill Dam to assess how improvements in DO at the dam discharge would affect water quality and fish growth throughout the river. We simulated different types of mitigation (i.e., at the turbine and in the reservoir forebay) and different levels of improvement. The model application successfully demonstrates how a modeling approach like this one can be used to assess whether a prescribed mitigation is likely to meet intended objectives from both a water quality and a biological resource perspective. These techniques can be used to assess the tradeoffs between hydropower operations, power generation, and environmental quality
Evolution of IGF-1 in children born small for gestational age and with growth retardation, treated by growth hormone adapted to IGF-1 levels after 1 year
AIM: This study was designed to estimate the percentage of growth hormone (GH)-treated children born small for gestational age (SGA), with serum IGF-1 >2 SDS before and after GH dose adaptation. METHODS: SGA boys aged 4-9 and girls aged 4-7 with a height <-2 SDS and an annual growth rate below the mean received a subcutaneous GH dose of 57 mug/kg/day for 2 years. The GH dose was to be decreased by 30% in children with serum IGF-1 >2 SDS at 12 months and on the previous sample. The GH dose could be reduced a second time to 35 mug/kg.day. IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 dosages were centralized. RESULTS: Among the 49 (21 boys) children included in the study, 8 (16.3%) had an IGF-1 >2 SDS consecutively at 9 and 12 months (95% CI 7.3, 29.7). The GH dose was decreased in 6/8 children. However, IGF-1 levels were elevated at several nonconsecutive determinations in 45% (95% CI 28.4, 56.6) of the patients. CONCLUSION: A high IGF-1 level is observed in 45% of the GH SGA-treated children with a relatively high dose of GH. A 30% reduction in the GH dose causes a decrease in IGF-1 below 2 SDS in most children
Black holes and Hawking radiation in spacetime and its analogues
These notes introduce the fundamentals of black hole geometry, the thermality
of the vacuum, and the Hawking effect, in spacetime and its analogues.
Stimulated emission of Hawking radiation, the trans-Planckian question, short
wavelength dispersion, and white hole radiation in the setting of analogue
models are also discussed. No prior knowledge of differential geometry, general
