    Out of equilibrium dynamics of coherent non-abelian gauge fields

    We study out-of-equilibrium dynamics of intense non-abelian gauge fields. Generalizing the well-known Nielsen-Olesen instabilities for constant initial color-magnetic fields, we investigate the impact of temporal modulations and fluctuations in the initial conditions. This leads to a remarkable coexistence of the original Nielsen-Olesen instability and the subdominant phenomenon of parametric resonance. Taking into account that the fields may be correlated only over a limited transverse size, we model characteristic aspects of the dynamics of color flux tubes relevant in the context of heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures; PRD version, minor change

    SmartReviews: Towards Human- and Machine-Actionable Representation of Review Articles

    Review articles are a means to structure state-of-the-art literature and to organize the growing number of scholarly publications. However, review articles are suffering from numerous limitations, weakening the impact the articles could potentially have. A key limitation is the inability of machines to access and process knowledge presented within review articles. In this work, we present SmartReviews, a review authoring and publishing tool, specifically addressing the limitations of review articles. The tool enables community-based authoring of living articles, leveraging a scholarly knowledge graph to provide machine-actionable knowledge. We evaluate the approach and tool by means of a SmartReview use case. The results indicate that the evaluated article is successfully addressing the weaknesses of the current review practices

    Sensitivity to Clouds’ Microphysical Structure and Cloud-Topped Moisture

    We investigated whether Top-of-Atmosphere Shortwave (TOA SW) anisotropy—essential to convert satellite-based instantaneous TOA SW radiance measurements into TOA SW fluxes—is sensitive to cloud-top effective radii and cloud-topped water vapor. Using several years of CERES SSF Edition 4 data—filtered for overcast, horizontally homogeneous, low-level and single-layer clouds of cloud optical thickness 10—as well as broadband radiative transfer simulations, we built refined empirical Angular Distribution Models (ADMs). The ADMs showed that anisotropy fluctuated particularly around the cloud bow and cloud glory (up to 2.9–8.0%) for various effective radii and at highest and lowest viewing zenith angles under varying amounts of cloud-topped moisture (up to 1.3–6.4%). As a result, flux estimates from refined ADMs differed from CERES estimates by up to 20 W m−2 at particular combinations of viewing and illumination geometry. Applied to CERES cross-track observation of January and July 2007—utilized to generate global radiation budget climatologies for benchmark comparisons with global climate models—we found that such differences between refined and CERES ADMs introduced large-scale biases of 1–2 W m−2 and on regional levels of up to 10 W m−2. Such biases could be attributed in part to low cloud-top effective radii (about 8 μm) and low cloud-topped water vapor (1.7 kg m−2) and in part to an inopportune correlation of viewing and illumination conditions with temporally varying effective radii and cloud-topped moisture, which failed to compensate towards vanishing flux bias. This work may help avoid sampling biases due to discrepancies between individual samples and the median cloud-top effective radii and cloud-top moisture conditions represented in current ADMs

    Outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia complex infections associated with contaminated octenidine mouthwash solution, Germany, August to September 2018

    Three German patients developed nosocomial pneumonia after cardiac surgery and had Burkholderia cepacia complex detected in respiratory specimens. Two patients died of septic multi-organ failure. Wholegenome sequencing detected genetically identical B. cepacia complex strains in patient samples, from a batch of octenidine mouthwash solution, which had been used for nursing care, as well as in samples obtained from the manufacturer during production. Contamination of medical products during manufacturing may lead to international outbreaks

    Molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of Clostridioides difficile detected in chicken, soil and human samples from Zimbabwe

    Background: Clostridioides difficile is the major cause of infectious nosocomial diarrhoea in industrialized nations. Data on the occurrence of C. difficile in Africa, ribotype (RT) distribution, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and potential zoonotic transmission are scarce. Methods: 80 Zimbabwean C. difficile isolates from different sources (chicken [n = 30], soil [n = 21] and humans [n = 29]) were investigated using ribotyping, toxin gene detection, resistance testing, multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA), and whole genome sequencing (WGS). Results: Among chicken isolates, the most common RTs were RT103 (6/30), RT025 (5/30) and RT070 (4/30). Within soil samples, RT025 and RT056 were most common (3/21 each). In contrast, the non-toxigenic RT084 was most frequently found in human isolates (4/29). Toxin genes were detected in only 19/29 human isolates. Susceptibility testing showed no resistance against metronidazole and vancomycin, and resistance against macrolides and rifampicin was scarce (3/80 and 2/80, respectively); however, 26/80 isolates showed moxifloxacin resistance. MLVA and WGS of strains with identical RTs stemming from different sources revealed clustering of RT025 and RT084 isolates from human und non-human samples. Conclusion: No "hypervirulent” strains were found. The detected clusters between human, chicken and soil isolates indicate ongoing transmission between humans and environmental sources and might point towards a zoonotic potential

    The Anti-de Sitter Gott Universe: A Rotating BTZ Wormhole

    Recently it has been shown that a 2+1 dimensional black hole can be created by a collapse of two colliding massless particles in otherwise empty anti-de Sitter space. Here we generalize this construction to the case of a non-zero impact parameter. The resulting spacetime, which may be regarded as a Gott universe in anti-de Sitter background, contains closed timelike curves. By treating these as singular we are able to interpret our solution as a rotating black hole, hence providing a link between the Gott universe and the BTZ black hole. When analyzing the spacetime we see how the full causal structure of the interior can be almost completely inferred just from considerations of the conformal boundary.Comment: 46 pages (LaTeX2e), 13 figures (eps
