The importance of sampling for the efficiency of artificial neural networks in digital soil modelling

In Portugal, soil mapping remains incomplete, and there are also significant problems with the existing cartography. Digital Soil Mapping uses advanced computerbased techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for mapping soil classes in a cheaper, more consistent and flexible way, using surrogate landscape data. This work used five different training sets to evaluate the impact that sampling has on the predictive accuracy of ANNs. The testes were carried out in IDRISI Taiga for two catchments in northern Portugal, using an ANN method known as multi-layer perceptron. Soil Landscape Modelling – Placing Place in its Place

Landscape variables, which are also factors of soil formation, can be combined with existing soil map data to train Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in order to predict soil types in unmapped areas. In this study, the impact of location data and proximity of the training data on the performance of ANN models, for two catchments in northern Portugal, is evaluated. Results are largely concurrent between catchments, indicating that using latitude and longitude data produces more accurate models, whilst taking into account the spatial autocorrelative properties of input data makes ANN models converge for a better “local” rather than “global” solution. Uma Análise Comparativa De Parâmetros Do Doppler Transcraniano Adquiridos Durante A Colocação De Stent Carotídeo E Endarterectomia Carotídea Por Semieversão

Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) have both been proposed for treatment of critical atherosclerotic stenosis located at the carotid bifurcation. Monitoring of hyperintense microembolic signals (MES) by transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) is considered a method of quality control, both in CEA and in CAS. Objective To analyze temporal distribution of MES throughout both semi-eversion CEA and CAS procedures and to evaluate changes in mean velocity of blood flow through the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA). Method Thirty-three procedures (17 CEA and 16 CAS) were prospectively monitored using TCD and the data were related to three different stages of surgery (pre-cerebral protection, during cerebral protection and post-cerebral protection). Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, ANOVA and contrast tests were used for statistical analysis. Results The MES were uniformly distributed in the CEA group, but not in the CAS group (p = 0.208). The number of MES was higher in the CAS group in all stages. The average flow in the MCA was similarly lower in both groups during the protection stage. Conclusion CEA provoked a lower incidence of MES per procedure than CAS in all stages. The behavior of the averages of the mean of blood flow through the MCA was similar in both groups.15319720

How Many Azores Bullfinches (Pyrrhula murina) Are There in the World? Case Study of a Threatened Species

The Azores bullfinch (Pyrrhula murina Godman, 1866) is a rare Passeriformes endemic from the eastern part of São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. This bird was almost considered extinct in the first half of the 20th century, but due to recent conservation measures, it has experienced a recovery since the beginning of the 2000s. Despite the attention given to this bird, the size of its population is still controversial, and the most recent studies present significant divergences on this behalf. The purpose of the present study is to present data from the long-term monitoring and results of the third single-morning survey of the Azores bullfinch to update information about the population size and range of this species. In addition, we performed a literature review to highlight the limitations and advantages of the different approaches for monitoring this species. The Azores Bullfinch records during the single-morning survey indicated a reduction in the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of this species in comparison with the previous studies, despite the increase in bird detection. However, we suggest that the distribution range of this species needs further analysis concerning its area to exclude non suitable habitats from this analysis. IMPLEMENTAÇÃO DO SISTEMA ELETRÔNICO DE INFORMAÇÃO – SEI: o caso da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia - UFU.

A tecnologia tornou-se grande aliada da transparência, publicidade e eficiência da administração pública. No Sistema Eletrônico de Informações – SEI, da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia – UFU, os usuários externos não têm acesso à visualização dos trâmites processuais como um todo. Assim, há oportunidades de aprimoramento do sistema, permitindo ao usuário externo conhecer os fluxos que envolvem os processos, possibilitando maior transparência, trazendo ganhos à instituição, aos usuários e à sociedade, tornando o serviço público prestado mais eficiente e corroborando com a legislação relacionada. Este relato técnico mostra como a instituição ganha ao onerar menos o tempo que agentes públicos gastam para prestar informações via telefone ou pessoalmente, o usuário ganha ao conhecer as etapas dos processos e seus devidos prazos/responsáveis, e a sociedade ganha ao ter os dados transparentes, colaborando para o controle social. Em conjunto todos os benefícios contribuem para uma melhor gestão do bem público e melhor entrega de serviços à sociedade, visto que o aprimoramento do item de pesquisa pública do SEI, para o usuário externo, poderá contribuir com a promoção da governança, da gestão de riscos e da integridade

A web tool is presented to estimate the building material, based on the designer information. The developed tool is free and is available online. The data used in this work was obtained from 137 Brazilian projects, including indices of architectural form, construction details and consumption of materials. Also, it is available a summary statistics of the 137 projects in order to allow comparisons with new projects (benchmark). Aiming to improve the tool, the designer can add the information of his performed construction.O desenvolvimento deste trabalho teve como objetivo a criação de um sistema de consultas online onde o projetista poderia inserir dados sobre seu edifício e receber valores estimados de índices (consumo médio de uma obra) a partir de uma base de dados de projetos já realizados. A fim de facilitar o acesso a esta base de dados, o sistema foi montado em forma de website para disponibilização online. Para a criação do banco de dados, utilizou-se como base de 137 projetos. Através da informação de cada projeto, tornou-se possível o levantamento de índices relativos à forma arquitonica, detalhes construtivos e indices de consumo de materiais. A ferramenta desenvolvida ajuda o engenheiro projetista a verificar dados e fazer uma comparação com outros projetos (benchmark), sendo uma forte ajuda para um projeto. A Educação na Literatura de Cordel: o folheto como fonte de saberes: Education in Cordel Literature: the pamphlet as a source of knowledge

A literatura de cordel se vale de uma linguagem particular para comunicar acontecimentos como elemento de intermediação entre a oralidade e a escrita. Surgida no Nordeste brasileiro e se projetou cordel para o mundo. Cordelistas ou poetas populares, além de narrativas ficcionais, abordam realidades sociais e políticas e fatos acontecidos instigando a construção de uma memória popular atrelada à cultura, além de estabelecer um caráter didático proporcionando a disseminação de saberes que perpassam a Cultura Popular. Este trabalho apresenta uma pesquisa, em que, se realizou por meio da análise de conteúdo, a catalogação dos elementos relacionados a produção de conteúdo didático/educativo abordados nos cordéis existentes na Biblioteca Átila Almeida, situada no Campus I da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba, em Campina Grande. Os procedimentos metodológicos seguem as seguintes etapas: pesquisa bibliográfica, catalogação; análise de conteúdo e análise documental. Foram catalogados cerca de 250 folhetos (unidade de amostragem), dos quais foram selecionados 75 que abordavam, em seus títulos, termos associados à educação, em especial a conteúdos didáticos. Pôde-se concluir que, sobre a temática em questão, encontrada nos folhetos analisados é caracterizada por narrativas que favorecem a instrução e a informação
