Automatic vehicle counting area creation based on vehicle deep learning detection and DBSCAN
Deep learning and high-performance computing have augmented and speed-up the scope of video-based vehicles' massive counting. The automatic vehicle counts result from the detection and tracking of the vehicles in certain areas or Regions of Interest (ROI). In this paper, we propose a technique to create a counting area with different traffic-flow directions based on YOLO and DBSCAN You Only Look Once version five (YOLOv5) and Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN). We compare the performance of the method against the manually counted ground truth. The proposed method showed that it is possible to generate the ROIs (counting areas) according to the traffic flow using deep learning techniques with relatively good accuracy (less than 5 % error). These results are promising but we need to explore the limits of this method with more street-view configurations, time and other detection and tracking algorithms, and in an HPC environment.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
NEOLIBERALISMO E OS GRUPOS ECONÔMICOS DE MONTERREY
In its beginnings in Mexico, the renewal of liberalism manifested itself as support for the alternative project of economic nationalism adopted by the financial elite throughout the 20th century. However, economic nationalism was established as an ideology that supported the economic policy of the State. The objective of this study was to know the main theoretical characteristics and particularities of the neoliberal model that allowed the economic groups of the country and especially those of Monterrey to accumulate and reproduce capitalism successfully. The methodology corresponds to a documentary-type investigation that used historical-analytical methods, with a descriptive scope that was supported by secondary sources of information. The results indicate that the growth strategies, assets, corporate structure, alliances and financing of the economic groups of Monterrey supported by the neoliberal model place their role in the era of market globalization, consolidating the reproduction of capitalism.En sus inicios en México, la renovación del liberalismo se manifestó como el respaldo del proyecto alternativo de nacionalismo económico adoptado por la élite financiera a lo largo del siglo XX. A quaternion deterministic monogenic CNN layer for contrast invariance
Deep learning (DL) is attracting considerable interest as it currently achieves remarkable performance in many branches of science and technology. However, current DL cannot guarantee capabilities of the mammalian visual systems such as lighting changes. This paper proposes a deterministic entry layer capable of classifying images even with low-contrast conditions. We achieve this through an improved version of the quaternion monogenic wavelets. We have simulated the atmospheric degradation of the CIFAR-10 and the Dogs and Cats datasets to generate realistic contrast degradations of the images. The most important result is that the accuracy gained by using our layer is substantially more robust to illumination changes than nets without such a layer. The authors would like to thank to CONACYT and Barcelona supercomputing Center. Using transition metal tetraphosphonates as precursor of phosphorus-containing electrocatalysts
Coordination polymers (CPs) are widely studied due to their applicability in many fields. Among them, metal phosphonates (MPs) are attractive materials due to their versatile structural diversity and functionality, with interesting properties as proton conductors and electrocatalyst precursors.
In this work, we report the synthesis and crystal structures of several MPs derived from the combination of hexamethylenediamine-N,N,N’,N’-tetrakis(methylenephosphonic acid) (HDTMP) with different transition metals (M2+= Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni). The resulting solids, M[(HO3PCH2)2N(CH2)6N(CH2PO3H)2]·2H2O, show pillared-layered structures with capabilities of ammonia adsorption (Co2+ and Ni2+ derivatives). The ammonia-containing solids are crystalline, with a composition M[(HO3PCH2)2N(CH2)6N(CH2PO3H)2(H2O)2](NH3)4(H2O)12. The catalytic activities toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER), Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) of the corresponding (5% H2-Ar)-pyrolyzed materials, as well as the crystal structure of non-pyrolyzed precursor solids, will be discussed.Universidad de Málaga. Acute Effects of Whole-Body Electromyostimulation on Energy Expenditure at Resting and during Uphill Walking in Healthy Young Men
The effects of the different electrical frequencies of whole-body electrical stimulation (WB-EMS) on energy expenditure (EE) and the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) remain poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the effects of different WB-EMS electrical frequencies on EE and the RER during supine resting and uphill walking. A total of 10 healthy and recreationally active men (21.6 +/- 3.3 years old) participated in the present study. Participants completed two testing sessions in a randomized order. In each session, a variety of impulse frequencies (1 hertz (Hz), 2 Hz, 4 Hz, 6 Hz, 8 Hz, and 10 Hz) were applied in a randomized order, allowing a 10 min passive recovery between them. Oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were measured to calculate EE and the RER. All frequencies increased EE at rest (all p = 0.923). During uphill walking, the frequency that elicited the highest increase in EE was 6 Hz (Delta = 4.87 +/- 0.84 kcal/min) compared to the unstimulated condition. None of the impulse frequencies altered the RER during uphill walking. WB-EMS increases EE in healthy young men both during resting and uphill walking.WiemsPro S.L.University of GranadaUnit of Excellence on Exercise and Health (UCEES)Plan Propio de Investigacion 2016, Excellence actions: Units of Excellenc
Efficient FPSoC Prototyping of FCS-MPC for Three-Phase Voltage Source Inverters
This work describes an efficient implementation in terms of computation time and resource
usage in a Field-Programmable System-On-Chip (FPSoC) of a Finite Control Set Model Predictive
Control (FCS-MPC) algorithm. As an example, the FCS-MPC implementation is used for the current
reference tracking of a two-level three-phase power converter. The proposed solution is an enabler
for using both complex control algorithms and digital controllers for high switching frequency
semiconductor technologies. An original HW/SW (hardware and software) system architecture
for an FPSoC is designed to take advantage of a modern operating system, while removing time
uncertainty in real-time software tasks, and exploiting dedicated FPGA fabric for the most complex
computations. In addition, two different architectures for the FPGA-implemented functionality are
proposed and compared in order to study the area-speed trade-off. Experimental results show the
feasibility of the proposed implementation, which achieves a speed hundreds of times faster than the
conventional Digital Signal Processor (DSP)-based control platform.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-78430-RFondo Nacional de Investigación de Qatar NPRP 9-310-2-13
Biotecnologías reproductivas en el ganado bovino: cinco décadas de investigación en México
The main bovine reproductive biotechnologies are recapitulated herein in five sections, and their historical development and current status are analyzed, including the results generated in Mexico. In the 1970s, estrus synchronization and ovulation induction began; thus, the reproductive cycle started to be controlled with the resources available at that time, based on the knowledge of bovine reproductive physiology. Over the years, hormone therapy evolved as new compounds were discovered, refining methods to standardize the effect and generating new methods for the release of hormones. The most widely used biotechnology in the world, artificial insemination, owes its expansion to advances in semen processing, among which the development of diluents, cryopreservation, semen sexing, and computer-assisted sperm analysis stand out. The embryonic era began with the development of multi-ovulation and methods for collecting, evaluating, transferring, and cryopreserving embryos. The second embryonic era came with the fully in vitro production of embryos from immature eggs and frozen sperm, known as in vitro embryo production. Great research and material resources have been invested in this procedure, rendering it a pillar of genetic improvement and productivity, in combination with two other tools: sexed semen and genomic evaluations. A golden age of in vitro embryo production is on the horizon, with the possibility to produce accurate modifications in the embryo genome, thanks to gene editing technology.
A New Water Governance Model Aimed at Supply-Demand Management for Irrigation and Land Development in the Mendoza River Basin, Argentina.
This study aimed at achieving an organizational solution for improving the governance of water and land use and, consequently, improving the supply-demand water balance. Related modeling applied to diverse scenarios focus on water and land use development in the Mendoza River basin. A strategic analysis of water organization was performed using causal analysis, producing a Strategic Map (SM) and designing a Balanced Scorecard (BS). To assess the basin's water resources supply and demand, the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model was applied to the Administrative Management Units existing in the basin, taking into consideration the water availability and the granted water rights. The application of the organizational and governance model to various scenarios referring to 2030 show that by reordering allocations and water use criteria, implementing a better farm irrigation water management, improving capacity building of existing human resources, and adopting more adequate hard- and software for dams and canal management, it will be possible to accommodate demand in 2030 better than at present despite climate change impacts on demand and supply. In addition, users' participation will be enhanced
