    The complexity of soil biological sustainability

    Additions of organic amendments to soil not only compensate for decreased soil C, but also contribute to energy requirements for conserving biological activity levels. The soil microbial biomass displays some highly conserved, and possibly unique, characteristics that do not permit a classic interpretation of microbial metabolic parameter data. The resilience of soil microbial biomass and the role of soil organic matter in sustaining microbial biomass under practically zero C inputs were assessed in two long term incubation experiments using soils from the Broadbalk experiment at Rothamsted (UK). Soils with low organic C contents, showed the greatest decline in biomass C during the first 30 d of incubation. The ATP concentration of this rapidly declining microbial biomass did not change during the prolonged incubation period, confirming this peculiar character of the soil microbial biomass. Specific respiration rate did not depend upon substrate availability, being higher in soils that had received the lowest C inputs. Qualitative and quantitative changes observed in humic fractions suggest that humified soil organic matter is a much more dynamic soil fraction than is normally considered and provides a utilizable energy reserve for soil microorganisms. Carbon levels can be successfully restored in soils through practices such as incorporation of crop residues, re\u2010vegetation and application of manures, biosolids and composts. Some amendments, such as olive mill waste compost, promote incorporation of altered lignin structures, N\u2010containing compounds and carbohydrates into humic acids. The mineral\u2010bound fraction of humic C also increases, after their addition, and contributes to the accumulation of the most inert soil C pools

    APRENDIZAJE SERVICIO COMO ESTRATEGIA PARA LA INTEGRACI 3N DE PERSONAS CON DISCAPACIDAD A LAS ACTIVIDADES AGR\ucdCOLAS

    El prop\uf3sito fue analizar el aprendizaje servicio como estrategia para la integraci\uf3n de personas con discapacidad a las actividades agr\uedcolas. Desde el servicio comunitario estudiantil del Decanato de Agronom\ueda se desarrollan proyectos diversos donde destaca la atenci\uf3n a personas con discapacidad. Tal es el caso, del proyecto realizado en el Peque\uf1o Cottolengo Don Orione, instituci\uf3n sin fines de lucro que de forma gratuita presta servicio y atenci\uf3n integral a m\ue1s de 130 personas con diversidad funcional, con bajas posibilidades de independencia para el trabajo y carentes de un n\ufacleo familiar. El objetivo del proyecto del servicio comunitario fue desarrollar actividades agr\uedcolas para la producci\uf3n de alimentos y ornamentales en sus instalaciones. De \ue9ste se deriva el presente estudio con un abordaje cualitativo de investigaci\uf3n-acci\uf3n participativa siendo un m\ue9todo sistem\ue1tico e intencional de indagaci\uf3n para reflexionar y actuar sobre los problemas derivados de la realidad. El an\ue1lisis de la informaci\uf3n se presenta en tres contextos: (a) los resultados del proyecto: veinticinco (25) miembros del personal capacitado, treinta y cinco (35) j\uf3venes y adultos residentes, capacitados e incorporados a labor terapia, tres (3) hect\ue1reas de superficie incorporada a la producci\uf3n y tres (3) estructuras protegidas usadas eficazmente. (b) sistematizaci\uf3n de la experiencia de los estudiantes, quienes manifestaron que trabajar con personas con diversidad funcional agudiza su sentido de la justicia, tolerancia, amistad y humildad; (c) la opini\uf3n del personal, donde destacan que las actividades agr\uedcolas para la incorporaci\uf3n de los j\uf3venes con discapacidad fomentaron la motivaci\uf3n, habilidades, destrezas, mejoraron el estado de \ue1nimo de los participantes, la integraci\uf3n social y laboral. En consecuencia, el aprendizaje servicio demuestra su importancia en la incorporaci\uf3n de las personas con discapacidad a las labores agr\uedcolas. Abstract The purpose was to analyze service learning as a strategy for integration of people with impairments to agricultural activities. From student community service of \u93Decanato de agronom\ueda\u94 (Agronomy Deanship), diverse projects are developed where attention to persons with impairments in highlighted. This is the case of the project developed in \u93Peque\uf1o Cottolengo Don Orione\u94a non-profit organization that provides free of charge service and attention to over 130 persons with dysfunctional diversity, with low possibilities of independence for work and no family. Main objective of this community service research was to develop agricultural activities for food and ornament production in their facilities. This leads to the present research with a qualitative approach of \u93investigaci\uf3n-acci\uf3n participative\u94 (Participative research-action) being an international and systematic method for inquire and reflect about the problems derived in reality. Analysis of information is presented in three contexts: (a)results of project: twenty five (25) members of trained staff, thirty five (35) young and adult residents, trained and incorporated to therapy labor, three (3) hectares of land incorporated to production and three (3) protected structures used efficiently. (b) systematization of experience of students who manifested that working with people with functional diversity sharpens their sense of justice , tolerance, friendship and humility; (c) Staff opinion, where agricultural activities for incorporation of young men and women with an impairment are emphasized fomented motivation, capabilities, they improved the mood of participants, social and labor integration. In consequence, service learning shows its importance in the incorporation of persons with impairments to agricultural labors.     High-spin states and band terminations in v 49

    High-spin states in 49 V have been studied through the 28 Si(28 Si, α3p) reaction using the EUROBALL γ-ray detector array. The 49 V level scheme has been extended up to 13.1 MeV including 21 new states. Both negative and positive parity states have been interpreted in the framework of theShell Model.     The effects of nisin-producing Lactococcus lactis strain used as probiotic on Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) growth, gut microbiota, and transcriptional response.

    The present research tested the effects of dietary nisin-producing Lactococcus lactis on growth performance, feed utilization, intestinal morphology, transcriptional response, and microbiota in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). A feeding trial was conducted with fish weighting 70-90 g. Fish were tagged with passive, integrated transponders and distributed in nine 500-L tanks with 40 fish each. Fish were fed for 12 weeks with either a control (diet A) or experimental diets (diets B and C) in triplicate (3 tanks/diet). Extruded pellets of diets B and C were supplemented with a low (2 x 109 CFU/kg) and a high (5 x 109 CFU/kg) dose of probiotic, respectively. No significant differences were found between groups for the feed conversion ratio or specific growth rates. However, the final body weight of fish fed diet C was significantly higher than the control group with intermediate values for fish fed diet B. Histological analysis conducted using a semi-quantitative scoring system showed that probiotic did not alter the morphology of the intestine and did not trigger inflammation. With regard to the transcriptomic response, a customized PCR array layout was designed to simultaneously profile a panel of 44 selected genes. Significant differences in the expression of key genes involved in innate and acquired immunity were detected between fish fed probiotic and control diets. To analyze the microbiota associated to the feeds and the gut autochthonous microbial communities, we used the Illumina MiSeq platform for sequencing the 16S rRNA gene and a metagenomics pipeline based on VSEARCH and RDP databases. The analysis of gut microbiota revealed a lack of colonization of the probiotic in the host\u2019s intestinal mucosa. However, probiotic did modulate the fish gut microbiota, confirming that colonization is not always necessary to induce host modification. In fact, diets B and C were enriched with Actinomycetales, as compared to diet A, which instead showed a higher percentage of Pseudomonas, Sphyngomonas, and Lactobacillus genera. These results were confirmed by the clear separation of gut bacterial community of fish fed with the probiotic from the bacterial community of control fish group in the beta-diversity and PLS-DA (supervised partial least-squares discriminant analysis) analyses

    Conformational polymorphic changes in the crystal structure of the chiral antiparasitic drug praziquantel and interactions with calcium carbonate

    Praziquantel is an antiparasitic drug used for decades. Currently, the praziquantel commercial preparation is a racemic mixture, in which only the levo-enantiomer possesses anthelmintic activity. The knowledge of its properties in the solid state and other chemical-physical properties is necessary for improving its efficacy and applications. Drug solid dispersions were prepared with calcium carbonate at 1:5 drug to excipient weight ratio by solvent evaporation method. Then, the modification of the crystal structure of the racemic polymorph of praziquantel in presence of calcium carbonate has been studied by means of several analytical techniques (DSC,TGA, XRD, SEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and chiral liquid chromatography). This study has been completed with atomistic calculations based on empirical interatomic force fields and quantum mechanics methods applied to the crystal structure of praziquantel and of intermolecular interactions. The results evidenced that calcium carbonate provoked a conformational change in the praziquantel molecule yielding the formation of different polymorphs of praziquantel crystal. These alterations were not observed replacing calcium carbonate with colloidal silica as excipient in the solid dispersion

The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined.     Association of MC1R Variants and host phenotypes with melanoma risk in CDKN2A mutation carriers: a GenoMEL study

    &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Background&lt;/b&gt; Carrying the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) germline mutations is associated with a high risk for melanoma. Penetrance of CDKN2A mutations is modified by pigmentation characteristics, nevus phenotypes, and some variants of the melanocortin-1 receptor gene (MC1R), which is known to have a role in the pigmentation process. However, investigation of the associations of both MC1R variants and host phenotypes with melanoma risk has been limited.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Methods&lt;/b&gt; We included 815 CDKN2A mutation carriers (473 affected, and 342 unaffected, with melanoma) from 186 families from 15 centers in Europe, North America, and Australia who participated in the Melanoma Genetics Consortium. In this family-based study, we assessed the associations of the four most frequent MC1R variants (V60L, V92M, R151C, and R160W) and the number of variants (1, &#8805;2 variants), alone or jointly with the host phenotypes (hair color, propensity to sunburn, and number of nevi), with melanoma risk in CDKN2A mutation carriers. These associations were estimated and tested using generalized estimating equations. All statistical tests were two-sided.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Results&lt;/b&gt; Carrying any one of the four most frequent MC1R variants (V60L, V92M, R151C, R160W) in CDKN2A mutation carriers was associated with a statistically significantly increased risk for melanoma across all continents (1.24 × 10−6 &#8804; P &#8804; .0007). A consistent pattern of increase in melanoma risk was also associated with increase in number of MC1R variants. The risk of melanoma associated with at least two MC1R variants was 2.6-fold higher than the risk associated with only one variant (odds ratio = 5.83 [95% confidence interval = 3.60 to 9.46] vs 2.25 [95% confidence interval = 1.44 to 3.52]; Ptrend = 1.86 × 10−8). The joint analysis of MC1R variants and host phenotypes showed statistically significant associations of melanoma risk, together with MC1R variants (.0001 &#8804; P &#8804; .04), hair color (.006 &#8804; P &#8804; .06), and number of nevi (6.9 × 10−6 &#8804; P &#8804; .02).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Conclusion&lt;/b&gt; Results show that MC1R variants, hair color, and number of nevi were jointly associated with melanoma risk in CDKN2A mutation carriers. This joint association may have important consequences for risk assessments in familial settings.&lt;/p&gt

    Cytotoxic Acetogenins from the Roots of Annona purpurea

    Annona purpurea, known in Mexico as "cabeza de negro" or "ilama", belongs to the Annonaceae family. Its roots are employed in folk medicine in several regions of Mexico. Taking that information into account, a chemical and biological analysis of the components present in the roots of this species was proposed. Our results demonstrated that the dichloromethane (DCM) extract was exclusively constituted by a mixture of five new acetogenins named annopurpuricins A-E (1-5). These compounds have an aliphatic chain of 37 carbons with a terminal \u3b1,\u3b2 unsaturated \u3b3-lactone. Compounds 1 and 2 belong to the adjacent bis-THF (tetrahydrofuran) \u3b1-monohydroxylated type, while compounds 3 and 4 belong to the adjacent bis-THF \u3b1,\u3b1'-dihydroxylated type; only compound 5 possesses a bis-epoxide system. Complete structure analysis was carried out by spectroscopy and chemical methods. All compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity on three human tumor cell lines (MSTO-211H, HeLa and HepG2). Compounds 1-4 inhibited significantly the growth of HeLa and HepG2 cells, showing GI50 values in the low/subnanomolar range, while 5 was completely ineffective under the tested conditions. The investigation of the mechanism of action responsible for cytotoxicity revealed for the most interesting compound 1 the ability to block the complex I activity on isolated rat liver mitochondria (RLM)

    Observation of Z production in proton-lead collisions at LHCb

    The first observation of Z boson production in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per proton-nucleon pair of root(s) N N = 5TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 nb(-1) collected with the LHCb detector. The Z candidates are reconstructed from pairs of oppositely charged muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 and transverse momenta above 20 GeV/c. The invariant dimuon mass is restricted to the range 60-120 GeV/c. The Z production cross-section is measured to be sigma(Z ->mu+mu-) (fwd) = 13.5(-4.0)(+5.4)(stat.) +/- 1.2(syst.) nb in the direction of the proton beam and sigma(Z ->mu+mu-) (bwd) = 10.7(-5.1)(+8.4)(stat.) +/- 1.0(syst.) nb in the direction of the lead beam, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic

    DEVELOPMENT of the MODEL of GALACTIC INTERSTELLAR EMISSION for STANDARD POINT-SOURCE ANALYSIS of FERMI LARGE AREA TELESCOPE DATA

    Most of the celestial \u3b3 rays detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope originate from the interstellar medium when energetic cosmic rays interact with interstellar nucleons and photons. Conventional point-source and extended-source studies rely on the modeling of this diffuse emission for accurate characterization. Here, we describe the development of the Galactic Interstellar Emission Model (GIEM), which is the standard adopted by the LAT Collaboration and is publicly available. This model is based on a linear combination of maps for interstellar gas column density in Galactocentric annuli and for the inverse-Compton emission produced in the Galaxy. In the GIEM, we also include large-scale structures like Loop I and the Fermi bubbles. The measured gas emissivity spectra confirm that the cosmic-ray proton density decreases with Galactocentric distance beyond 5 kpc from the Galactic Center. The measurements also suggest a softening of the proton spectrum with Galactocentric distance. We observe that the Fermi bubbles have boundaries with a shape similar to a catenary at latitudes below 20\ub0 and we observe an enhanced emission toward their base extending in the north and south Galactic directions and located within \u2dc4\ub0 of the Galactic Center
