Helium atom diffraction measurements of the surface structure and vibrational dynamics of CH_3-Si(111) and CD_3-Si(111) surfaces
The surface structure and vibrational dynamics of CH_3–Si(111) and CD_3–Si(111) surfaces were measured using helium atom scattering. The elastic diffraction patterns exhibited a lattice constant of 3.82 Å, in accordance with the spacing of the silicon underlayer. The excellent quality of the observed diffraction patterns, along with minimal diffuse background, indicated a high degree of long-range ordering and a low defect density for this interface. The vibrational dynamics were investigated by measurement of the Debye–Waller attenuation of the elastic diffraction peaks as the surface temperature was increased. The angular dependence of the specular (θ_i=θ_f) decay revealed
perpendicular mean-square displacements of 1.0 x 10^(−5) Å^2 K^(−1) for the CH_3–Si(111) surface and 1.2 x 10^(−5) Å^2 K^(−1) for the CD_3–Si(111) surface, and a He-surface attractive well depth of ~7 meV. The effective surface Debye temperatures were calculated to be 983 K for the CH_3–Si(111) surface and 824 K for the CD_3–Si(111) surface. These relatively large Debye temperatures suggest that collisional energy accommodation at the surface occurs primarily through
the Si–C local molecular modes. The parallel mean-square displacements were 7.1 x 10^(−4) and 7.2 x 10^(−4) Å^2 K^(−1) for the CH_3–Si(111) and CD_3–Si(111) surfaces, respectively. The observed increase in thermal motion is consistent with the interaction between the helium atoms and Si–CH_3 bending modes. These experiments have thus yielded detailed information on the dynamical properties of these robust and technologically interesting semiconductor interfaces
Real-Time Sports Data and the First Amendment
Technological advancements have created an emergent challenge for organizations attempting to monetize real-time information. Real-time data as a commodity is especially relevant in the sports industry. Sports leagues increasingly seek to control the dissemination of real-time data in conjunction with lucrative distribution agreements. We analyze the legal status of real-time sports data under both intellectual property law and the First Amendment, with our case-by-case analysis extending to spectators, gamblers, journalists, and non-gambling entrepreneurs. Although we conclude that the First Amendment protections are broad across all four categories, particularly when the underlying sporting event takes place on public land, we find discrete areas where sports leagues and event organizers may claim certain types of real-time data as proprietary, bolstering their ability to sell such data and preventing others from doing the same
Biogeography of Caladenia (Orchidaceae), with special reference to the South-west Australian Floristic Region
Caladenia contains 376 species and subspecies, of which almost all are endemic to temperate and southern semiarid Australia. Eleven species occur in New Zealand, 10 of which are endemic, and one species is widely distributed in eastern Australia and the western Pacific. Only three species occur in both south-western and south-eastern Australia. At subgeneric level, Drakonorchis is endemic to the South-west Australian Floristic Region (SWAFR), Stegostyla to eastern Australia and New Zealand, whereas three subgenera, Calonema, Phlebochilus and Elevatae occur on both sides of the Nullarbor Plain. Subgenus Caladenia is primarily eastern Australian but also extends to the western Pacific. The largest subgenera (Calonema and Phlebochilus) have radiated extensively, with Calonema exhibiting a greater concentration of species in more mesic parts of the SWAFR than Phlebochilus. Within the SWAFR, the major biogeographic division within Caladenia follows the 600-mm isohyet. Within rainfall zones, biogeographic districts for Caladenia correlate with a combination of underlying geology and surface soils. Areas of high endemism contain diverse edaphic environments. Climatic and edaphic requirements are likely to be key drivers of rarity in Caladenia, although these parameters may be acting in concert with mycorrhizal and pollinator specificity
Quantum Cosmology of Kantowski-Sachs like Models
The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for a class of Kantowski-Sachs like models is
completely solved. The generalized models include the Kantowski-Sachs model
with cosmological constant and pressureless dust. Likewise contained is a
joined model which consists of a Kantowski-Sachs cylinder inserted between two
FRW half--spheres. The (second order) WKB approximation is exact for the wave
functions of the complete set and this facilitates the product structure of the
wave function for the joined model. In spite of the product structure the wave
function can not be interpreted as admitting no correlations between the
different regions. This problem is due to the joining procedure and may
therefore be present for all joined models. Finally, the {s}ymmetric {i}nitial
{c}ondition (SIC) for the wave function is analyzed and compared with the ``no
bouindary'' condition. The consequences of the different boundary conditions

Defining Vascular Deserts to Describe Access to Care and Identify Sites for Targeted Limb Preservation Outreach
BackgroundAccess to care plays a critical role in limb salvage in chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). A "medical desert" describes a community lacking access to medical necessities, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. We sought to describe vascular deserts, which we defined as regions with decreased access to specialty care.MethodsAll California providers performing vascular surgery procedures were identified through online provider and health care facility searches. Facility participation in the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) lower extremity bypass (LEB) and peripheral vascular intervention (PVI) modules was also determined. Addresses were geocoded with a 30-mile surrounding buffer using ArcGIS (Geographic information systems), creating maps based on care type, including all providers performing vascular procedures, board-certified vascular surgeons, and facilities participating in VQI modules. Public census data overlayed on the maps demonstrated population composition in desert versus nondesert regions. Subsequently, data from the Healthy Places Index (HPI) was overlayed, providing data regarding 25 social factors, comprising an overall HPI score and percent, with lower scores corresponding to poorer health and outcomes.ResultsMaps depicting care regions demonstrated decreased provider coverage with increasing specialty care, with the VQI provider map showing the most prominent "desert" regions. When comparing nondesert versus desert regions by care type, demographics including race, the percentage of the population 200% below the poverty line, and the rate of uninsured residents were described. Social determinants of health were then described for desert and nondesert regions by care type, including the HPI percentage and specific domain factors. The percentage of uninsured residents was significant only in the desert and nondesert areas served by board-certified vascular surgeons (19.6 vs. 16.8%, P < 0.001). The mean HPI percentile was significantly lower in board-certified provider and VQI facility deserts than nondeserts (50.48% vs. 40.65%, P < 0.001 and 52.68% vs. 43.12%, P < 0.001, respectively). The economic and education factor percentiles were significantly lower in all desert populations, while the housing, social, and pollution factors were significantly higher in nondesert regions. Health care access, transportation, and neighborhood factor percentiles were significantly lower in board-certified and VQI facility deserts than in the nondesert areas.ConclusionsAccess to vascular care plays a significant role in limb salvage. Through mapping vascular deserts, patient demographics, and social factors in desert regions are better understood, and areas that would benefit most from targeted outreach and limb preservation programs for CLTI are identified
Ultraviolet Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae
Ultraviolet (UV) observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) probe the
outermost layers of the explosion, and UV spectra of SNe Ia are expected to be
extremely sensitive to differences in progenitor composition and the details of
the explosion. Here we present the first study of a sample of high
signal-to-noise ratio SN Ia spectra that extend blueward of 2900 A. We focus on
spectra taken within 5 days of maximum brightness. Our sample of ten SNe Ia
spans the majority of the parameter space of SN Ia optical diversity. We find
that SNe Ia have significantly more diversity in the UV than in the optical,
with the spectral variance continuing to increase with decreasing wavelengths
until at least 1800 A (the limit of our data). The majority of the UV variance
correlates with optical light-curve shape, while there are no obvious and
unique correlations between spectral shape and either ejecta velocity or
host-galaxy morphology. Using light-curve shape as the primary variable, we
create a UV spectral model for SNe Ia at peak brightness. With the model, we
can examine how individual SNe vary relative to expectations based on only
their light-curve shape. Doing this, we confirm an excess of flux for SN 2011fe
at short wavelengths, consistent with its progenitor having a subsolar
metallicity. While most other SNe Ia do not show large deviations from the
model, ASASSN-14lp has a deficit of flux at short wavelengths, suggesting that

Effects of Daily Zinc, Daily Multiple Micronutrient Powder, or Therapeutic Zinc Supplementation for Diarrhea Prevention on Physical Growth, Anemia, and Micronutrient Status in Rural Laotian Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
ObjectivesTo evaluate the optimal zinc supplementation strategy for improving growth and hematologic and micronutrient status in young Laotian children.Study designIn total, 3407 children aged 6-23 months were randomized to receive either daily preventive zinc tablets (7 mg/d), high-zinc, low-iron micronutrient powder (10 mg/d zinc, 6 mg/d iron, and 13 other micronutrients), therapeutic zinc supplementation for diarrhea (20 mg/d for 10 days per episode), or daily placebo powder; all were followed for ~9 months. Anthropometry, hemoglobin, zinc, and iron status were assessed at baseline and endline. Analyses were by intention-to-treat, using linear and modified Poisson regression.ResultsAt baseline, mean (±SD) age was 14.2 ± 5.1 months and stunting and anemia prevalence were 37.9% and 55.6%, respectively. At endline, zinc deficiency in the preventive zinc (50.7%) and micronutrient powder (59.1%) groups were significantly lower than in the therapeutic zinc (79.2%) and control groups (78.6%; P < .001), with no impact on stunting (37.1%-41.3% across the groups, P = .37). The micronutrient powder reduced iron deficiency by 44%-55% compared with other groups (P < .001), with no overall impact on anemia (P = .14). Micronutrient powder tended to reduce anemia by 11%-16% among children who were anemic at baseline (P = .06).ConclusionsDespite improving zinc status, preventive zinc and micronutrient powder had no impact on growth. The micronutrient powder improved iron status and tended to reduce anemia among the subset of previously anemic children.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.govNCT02428647
Reliability of Two Alternative Methods for the Standard Mid-thigh Isometric Pull
The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of two new alternative portable methods for measuring maximal isometric force measures while performing the standard mid-thigh pull. One method, the bar grip method, required the use of the trunk and upper extremity muscles, while the second method, the pelvic belt method, did not. Both methods demonstrated good test-retest reliability via randomized repeated measures over 24-36 hours. Interestingly, the pelvic belt method generally demonstrated average maximal forces up to 65% higher than the bar method. There was a good relationship between both methods. These new alternative methods could provide strength coaches an option for a more efficient, cost-effective, portable means for the mid-thigh pull test
