    Playing work: The uses of labour on the Shakespearean stage

    In my thesis I argue that different social groups in early modern England used the idea of work both to legitimise their own and to invalidate others' activities. Noble patronage, competition for audiences, the personal aspirations of dramatists, and its own problematic status all involved the theatre in these struggles. In my first chapter I argue that on the popular stage of the 1590s, acting was depicted as work in an attempt to counter accusations that actors earned money through play. However, plays written for the revived children's companies at the end of the decade stressed their performers' amateurism in order to appeal to the leisured elite. In the following two chapters I continue to explore the relation between work and social status, identifying a tension between the ruling class's attempts to justify its privilege by representing government as work, and its traditional disdain for labour. In Shakespeare's plays, emphasis seems to shift from the former to the latter over the course of his career, and I argue that this may be related to the attempts of the Lord Chamberlain's / King's Men to attract a privileged audience. In my fourth chapter I argue that ambivalence towards work underlies Ben Jonson's treatment of poetry as a profession, and compare his strategies for dealing with this to those used in the writings of early modern lawyers and physicians. I then examine the portrayal of mercantile work in the plays of Dekker and Heywood, showing how they reconcile uncertainty as to its morality with the need to appeal to a citizen audience. In my final chapter I suggest that the same playwrights both reflect and reinforce changing attitudes to women's work by both belittling it and discouraging certain forms of female labour

    Spatio-temporal influence of tundra snow properties on Ku-band (17.2 GHz) backscatter

    During the 2010/11 boreal winter, a distributed set of backscatter measurements was collected using a ground-based Ku-band (17.2 GHz) scatterometer system at 26 open tundra sites. A standard snow-sampling procedure was completed after each scan to evaluate local variability in snow layering, depth, density and water equivalent (SWE) within the scatterometer field of view. The shallow depths and large basal depth hoar encountered presented an opportunity to evaluate backscatter under a set of previously untested conditions. Strong Ku-band response was found with increasing snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE). In particular, co-polarized vertical backscatter increased by 0.82 dB for every 1 cm increase in SWE (R2 = 0.62). While the result indicated strong potential for Ku-band retrieval of shallow snow properties, it did not characterize the influence of sub-scan variability. An enhanced snow-sampling procedure was introduced to generate detailed characterizations of stratigraphy within the scatterometer field of view using near-infrared photography along the length of a 5m trench. Changes in snow properties along the trench were used to discuss variations in the collocated backscatter response. A pair of contrasting observation sites was used to highlight uncertainties in backscatter response related to short length scale spatial variability in the observed tundra environment

    Derivation and evaluation of a new extinction coefficient for use with the n-HUT snow emission model

    In this study, snow slab data collected from the Arctic Snow Microstructure Experiment were used in conjunction with a six-directional flux coefficient model to calculate individual slab absorption and scattering coefficients. These coefficients formed the basis for a new semiempirical extinction coefficient model, using both frequency and optical diameter as input parameters, along with the complex dielectric constant of snow. Radiometric observations, at 18.7, 21.0, and 36.5 GHz at both horizontal polarization (H-Pol) and vertical polarization (V-Pol), and snowpit data collected as part of the Sodankylä Radiometer Experiment were used to compare and contrast the simulated brightness temperatures produced by the multi-layer Helsinki University of Technology snow emission model, utilizing both the original empirical model and the new semiempirical extinction coefficient model described here. The results show that the V-Pol RMSE and bias values decreased when using the semiempirical extinction coefficient; however, the H-Pol RMSE and bias values increased on two of the lower microwave bands tested. The unbiased RMSE was shown to decrease across all frequencies and polarizations when using the semiempirical extinction coefficient

    Meta-Analysis of Present-Bias Estimation Using Convex Time Budgets

    We examine 220 estimates of the present-bias parameter from 28 articles using the Convex Time Budget protocol. The literature shows that people are on average present-biased, but estimates exhibit substantial heterogeneity across studies. There is evidence of modest selective reporting in the direction of overreporting present-bias. The primary source of heterogeneity is the type of reward, either monetary or non-monetary, but this effect is weakened after correcting for selective reporting. In studies using monetary rewards, the delay until the issue of the reward associated with the “current” time period influences estimates of the present-bias parameter

    Members of the Meloidogyne Avirulence Protein Family Contain Multiple Plant Ligand-Like Motifs

    Sedentary plant-parasitic nematodes engage in complex interactions with their host plants by secreting effector proteins. Some effectors of both root-knot nematodes (Meloidogynespp.) and cyst nematodes (Heterodera and Globodera spp.) mimic plant ligand proteins. Most prominently, cyst nematodes secrete effectors that mimic plant CLAVATA3/ESR-related (CLE) ligand proteins. However, only cyst nematodes have been shown to secrete such effectors and to utilize CLE ligand mimicry in their interactions with host plants. Here, we document the presence of ligand-like motifs in bona fide root-knot nematode effectors that are most similar to CLE peptides from plants and cyst nematodes. We have identified multiple tandem CLE-like motifs conserved within the previously identified Meloidogyneavirulence protein (MAP) family that are secreted from root-knot nematodes and have been shown to function in planta. By searching all 12 MAP family members from multiple Meloidogyne spp., we identified 43 repetitive CLE-like motifs composing 14 unique variants. At least one CLE-like motif was conserved in each MAP family member. Furthermore, we documented the presence of other conserved sequences that resemble the variable domains described in Heterodera and Globodera CLE effectors. These findings document that root-knot nematodes appear to use CLE ligand mimicry and point toward a common host node targeted by two evolutionarily diverse groups of nematodes. As a consequence, it is likely that CLE signaling pathways are important in other phytonematode pathosystems as well
