    The V&A: empire to multiculturalism?

    Get PDF
The paper considers the influence of Empire at the Victoria and Albert Museum, with particular reference to the display of collections from the Indian Sub-Continent in the late 20th century. It offers an analysis of the discursive practices of the Museum drawing on postcolonial theoretical positions, in particular Said’s concept of ‘Orientalism’. Questions are posed regarding the extent to which the Museum has adequately addressed and reflected Britain’s transformation from an imperial power to a post-colonial, multicultural society, and the need to articulate shared histories and strategies of inclusion

The V&A, The Destruction of the Country House and the Creation of ‘English Heritage’

This paper considers the role played by the VA and the exhibition The Destruction of the Country House in the political activities and increasing prominence of the ‘heritage lobby’ in England in the 1970s. It argues that the VA had a significant role in shaping the discourse and advancing the public awareness and political efficacy of the heritage movement, and that it assisted in reinforcing the association of, and perhaps even conflating, English heritage with the country house. The paper also reflects on changing attitudes and policy relating to heritage in England since the late twentieth century, drawing on a range of relevant critical literature and theoretical approaches

Fully Coherent X-ray Pulses from a Regenerative Amplifier Free Electron Laser

We propose and analyze a novel regenerative amplifier free electron laser (FEL) to produce fully coherent x-ray pulses. The method makes use of narrow-bandwidth Bragg crystals to form an x-ray feedback loop around a relatively short undulator. Self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) from the leading electron bunch in a bunch train is spectrally filtered by the Bragg reflectors and is brought back to the beginning of the undulator to interact repeatedly with subsequent bunches in the bunch train. The FEL interaction with these short bunches not only amplifies the radiation intensity but also broadens its spectrum, allowing for effective transmission of the x-rays outside the crystal bandwidth. The spectral brightness of these x-ray pulses is about two to three orders of magnitude higher than that from a single-pass SASE FEL.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

Oxytocin and Genetic Links with Eating Behaviours and Relevant Endophenotypes

    Get PDF
Oxytocin (OXT) is an ancestral neuropeptide hormone essential in the regulation of human behaviours vital for sustaining life such as food intake and reproduction. Importantly, these behaviours have strong associations with the brains reward circuitry. To date, there has been little OXT-genetic research in the field of eating behaviors. However, a recent study by Davis et al. (2017) identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the OXT receptor gene (OXTR), associated with overeating and relevant behaviours. The present study expanded on this work by analyzing SNPs of the LNPEP, CD38, and OXTG genes. Additionally, sex differences were also examined. A pre-existing data set consisting of 460 healthy volunteers was used in the study. A series of two-way MANOVAs were employed and results indicated nonsignificant main effects for genotype on all 12 SNPs. However, multivariate tests for sex were significant in each analysis. Possible explanations for the current findings are discussed
