    Spatial variability of mangrove primary productivity in the neotropics

    Mangroves are considered one of the most productive ecosystems in the world with significant contributions as carbon sinks in the biosphere. Yet few attempts have been made to assess global patterns in mangrove net primary productivity, except for a few assumptions relating litterfall rates to variation in latitude. We combined geophysical and climatic variables to predict mangrove litterfall rates at continental scale. On a per‐area basis, carbon flux in litterfall in the neotropics is estimated at 5 MgC·ha−1·yr−1, between 20% and 50% higher than previous estimates. Annual carbon fixed in mangrove litterfall in the neotropics is estimated at 11.5 TgC, which suggests that current global litterfall estimates extrapolated from mean reference values may have been underestimated by at least 5%. About 5.8 TgC of this total carbon fixed in the neotropics is exported to estuaries and coastal oceans, which is nearly 30% of global carbon export by tides. We provide the first attempt to quantify and map the spatial variability of carbon fixed in litterfall in mangrove forests at continental scale in response to geophysical and climatic environmental drivers. Our results strengthen the global carbon budget for coastal wetlands, providing blue carbon scientists and coastal policy makers with a more accurate representation of the potential of mangroves to offset carbon dioxide emissions

    Social presence in the 21st Century: an adjustment to the Community of Inquiry framework

    The Community of Inquiry framework, originally proposed by Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2000) identifies teaching, social and cognitive presences as central to a successful online educational experience. This article presents the findings of a study conducted in Uruguay between 2007 and 2010. The research aimed to establish the role of cognitive, social and teaching presences in the professional development of 40 English language teachers on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes delivered in blended learning settings. The findings suggest that teaching presence and cognitive presence have themselves 'become social'. The research points to social presence as a major lever for engagement, sense-making and peer support. Based on the patterns identified in the study, this article puts forward an adjustment to the Community of Inquiry framework, which shows social presence as more prominent within the teaching and cognitive constructs than the original version of the framework suggests

    Structural abnormalities of the coronary arterial wall - in addition to luminal narrowing - Affect myocardial blood flow reserve

    Multislice CT provides information on coronary luminal narrowing and on the structural abnormalities of the coronary arterial wall using densitometric analysis. We sought to investigate the effects of coronary luminal narrowing, structural abnormalities of the coronary arterial wall, and cardiovascular risk factors on regional and global myocardial blood flow (MBF) reserve. Methods: We studied 68 patients (mean age ± SD, 61 ± 10 y; 41 men, 27 women) with an intermediate probability of coronary artery disease. We measured the severity of coronary stenoses and the fibroadipose, fibromuscular, and calcium components of the coronary arterial wall by 64-row multislice CT coronary angiography. We also measured regional and global MBF reserve by PET using 13N-ammonia as a flow tracer at rest and after dipyridamole. Results: One or more significant coronary stenoses (≥50% luminal narrowing) was present in 32 patients (47%), and nonsignificant stenoses were present in 15 patients (22%). Regional MBF reserve was significantly different in the territories perfused by normal coronary arteries, nonsignificant coronary stenoses, and significant coronary stenoses (P < 0.001). Calcium content was higher in the coronary arteries with significant or nonsignificant stenoses (0.95% ± 1.08% and 0.73% ± 0.93%, respectively) than in those without stenoses (0.11% ± 0.38%, P < 0.001). Significant coronary stenosis (P = 0.047) and calcium content (P = 0.017) were the only independent determinants of impaired regional MBF reserve using multivariate analysis. At multiple logistic regression analysis, the Framingham risk score, an index of global cardiovascular risk burden, was the only significant determinant of global MBF reserve (P = 0.028). Conclusion: Coronary stenoses and coronary calcium content independently affect regional MBF reserve. Framingham risk score is the only significant determinant of global MBF reserve.     Student Satisfaction and Performance in an Online Teacher Certification Program

    The article presents a study which demonstrates the effectiveness of an online post baccalaureate teacher certification program developed by a Wisconsin university. The case method approach employing multiple methods and multiple data sources were used to investigate the degree to which pre-service teachers were prepared to teach. It was concluded that the study supports online delivery as an effective means of teacher preparation, but it was limited in the number of students followed into their first year of teaching

    Dog skin parasite load, TLR-2, IL-10 and TNF-α expression and infectiousness

    Visceral leishmaniosis is a zoonotic disease that is transmitted by Lutzomyia longipalpis sandflies. Dogs are the main peri-urban reservoir of the disease, and progression of canine leishmaniosis is dependent on the type of immune response elaborated against the parasite. Type 1 immunity is characterized by effective cellular response, with production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). In contrast, Type 2 immunity is predominantly humoral, associated with progression of the disease and mediated by anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 10 (IL-10). Although seemly important in the dynamics of leishmaniosis, other gene products such as toll-like receptor 2 (TRL-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) exert unclear roles in the determination of the type of immune response. Given that the dog skin serves as a micro-environment for the multiplication of Leishmania spp., we investigated the parasite load and the expression of TLR-2, iNOS, IL-10 and TNF-α in the skin of 29 infected and 8 control dogs. We found that increased parasite load leads to upregulation of TLR-2, IL-10 and TNF-α, indicating that abundance of these transcripts is associated with infection. We also performed a xenodiagnosis to demonstrate that increased parasitism is a risk factor for infectiousness to sandflies

    Wikis, blogs and podcasts: a new generation of Web-based tools for virtual collaborative clinical practice and education

    BACKGROUND: We have witnessed a rapid increase in the use of Web-based 'collaborationware' in recent years. These Web 2.0 applications, particularly wikis, blogs and podcasts, have been increasingly adopted by many online health-related professional and educational services. Because of their ease of use and rapidity of deployment, they offer the opportunity for powerful information sharing and ease of collaboration. Wikis are Web sites that can be edited by anyone who has access to them. The word 'blog' is a contraction of 'Web Log' – an online Web journal that can offer a resource rich multimedia environment. Podcasts are repositories of audio and video materials that can be "pushed" to subscribers, even without user intervention. These audio and video files can be downloaded to portable media players that can be taken anywhere, providing the potential for "anytime, anywhere" learning experiences (mobile learning). DISCUSSION: Wikis, blogs and podcasts are all relatively easy to use, which partly accounts for their proliferation. The fact that there are many free and Open Source versions of these tools may also be responsible for their explosive growth. Thus it would be relatively easy to implement any or all within a Health Professions' Educational Environment. Paradoxically, some of their disadvantages also relate to their openness and ease of use. With virtually anybody able to alter, edit or otherwise contribute to the collaborative Web pages, it can be problematic to gauge the reliability and accuracy of such resources. While arguably, the very process of collaboration leads to a Darwinian type 'survival of the fittest' content within a Web page, the veracity of these resources can be assured through careful monitoring, moderation, and operation of the collaborationware in a closed and secure digital environment. Empirical research is still needed to build our pedagogic evidence base about the different aspects of these tools in the context of medical/health education. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: If effectively deployed, wikis, blogs and podcasts could offer a way to enhance students', clinicians' and patients' learning experiences, and deepen levels of learners' engagement and collaboration within digital learning environments. Therefore, research should be conducted to determine the best ways to integrate these tools into existing e-Learning programmes for students, health professionals and patients, taking into account the different, but also overlapping, needs of these three audience classes and the opportunities of virtual collaboration between them. Of particular importance is research into novel integrative applications, to serve as the "glue" to bind the different forms of Web-based collaborationware synergistically in order to provide a coherent wholesome learning experience

    Introdução: É esperado que pacientes com câncer desenvolvam algum tipo de complicação na região oral, que pode estar relacionada às condições de saúde bucal do paciente e ao tipo de terapia utilizada. É de grande importância que o profissional da odontologia conheça as modalidades de tratamento do câncer de boca para o preparo da cavidade bucal antes, durante e após a terapia. Objetivos: O objetivo do projeto é possibilitar a formação de profissionais qualificados e competentes para atender adequadamente a pacientes portadores de neoplasias malignas, no pré e pós-operatório, no pré ou pós- tratamento de radioterapia e/ou quimioterapia, bem como, pesquisar, inovar e desenvolver novos protocolos, técnicas e metodologias, correlacionando as alterações clínicas com as características sistêmicas, dentro de um enfoque multidisciplinar e multiprofissional. Métodos: O projeto Onco atendeu mais de 200 pacientes oncológicos, realizando mais de 600 procedimentos, entre exodontias, dentística restauradora, endodontia, biopsias e cirurgias oncológicas em lábio, língua e mucosa oral com expectativas de cura. Acompanhamos e controlamos pacientes que desenvolveram osteoradionecrose e osteoradiomielite de mandíbula, pós- radioterapia, e proservação dos cânceres de cirurgia de cabeça e pescoço, operados e diagnosticados neste serviço. Resultados: O Projeto Onco vem se desenvolvendo de maneira excepcional, tendo sido procurado, por Hospitais Oncológicos, tais como, o Instituto de Oncologia e Radioterapia do Vale do Paraíba e pelo serviço de Transplante de Medula Óssea do Hospital Pio XII, para ser sua referência nos tratamentos odontológicos. Já hoje, desenvolvemos atendimento odontológico de alto nível para pacientes oncológicos e transplantados, cujo campo de atuação é extremamente carente em todo o país

    The Genome Sequence of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis: Functional Annotation and Extended Analysis of Gene Models

    We present the sequencing and annotation of the Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis genome, an etiological agent of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazon region of Brazil. L. (L.) amazonensis shares features with Leishmania (L.) mexicana but also exhibits unique characteristics regarding geographical distribution and clinical manifestations of cutaneous lesions (e.g. borderline disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis). Predicted genes were scored for orthologous gene families and conserved domains in comparison with other human pathogenic Leishmania spp. Carboxypeptidase, aminotransferase, and 3'-nucleotidase genes and ATPase, thioredoxin, and chaperone-related domains were represented more abundantly in L. (L.) amazonensis and L. (L.) mexicana species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these two species share groups of amastin surface proteins unique to the genus that could be related to specific features of disease outcomes and host cell interactions. Additionally, we describe a hypothetical hybrid interactome of potentially secreted L. (L.) amazonensis proteins and host proteins under the assumption that parasite factors mimic their mammalian counterparts. the model predicts an interaction between an L.
