    Photon statistics without counting photons

    We show how to obtain the photon distribution of a single-mode field using only avalanche photodetectors. The method is based on measuring the field at different quantum efficiencies and then inferring the photon distribution by maximum-likelihood estimation. The convergence of the method and its robustness against fluctuations are illustrated by means of numerically simulated experiments.Comment: references added, new figure

    Degradation of continuous variable entanglement in a phase-sensitive environment

    We address the propagation of twin-beam of radiation through Gaussian phase-sensitive channels, i.e. noisy channels with squeezed fluctuations. We find that squeezing the environment always reduces the survival time of entanglement in comparison to the case of simple dissipation and thermal noise. We also show that the survival time is further reduced if the squeezing phase of the fluctuations is different from the twin-beam phase.Comment: to be published in the special issue of J. Mod. Opt.     Multi-path entanglement of two photons

    We present a novel optical device based on an integrated system of micro-lenses and single mode optical fibers. It allows to collect and direct into many modes two photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion. By this device multiqubit entangled states and/or multilevel qu-ddit states of two photons, encoded in the longitudinal momentum degree of freedom, are created.     Measuring graph similarity through continuous-time quantum walks and the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence

    In this paper we propose a quantum algorithm to measure the similarity between a pair of unattributed graphs. We design an experiment where the two graphs are merged by establishing a complete set of connections between their nodes and the resulting structure is probed through the evolution of continuous-time quantum walks. In order to analyze the behavior of the walks without causing wave function collapse, we base our analysis on the recently introduced quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence. In particular, we show that the divergence between the evolution of two suitably initialized quantum walks over this structure is maximum when the original pair of graphs is isomorphic. We also prove that under special conditions the divergence is minimum when the sets of eigenvalues of the Hamiltonians associated with the two original graphs have an empty intersection

    Determinants of Pulmonary Hypertension in Left Ventricular Dysfunction

    AbstractObjectives. This study sought to analyze the determinants of pulmonary hypertension in patients with left ventricular dysfunction.Background. Pulmonary hypertension in patients with left ventricular dysfunction is a predictor of poor outcome. The independent role of cardiac functional abnormalities in the genesis of pulmonary hypertension is unclear.Methods. In 102 consecutive patients with primary left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction <50%), systolic pulmonary artery pressure was prospectively measured by Doppler echocardiography (using tricuspid regurgitant velocity), and left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, functional mitral regurgitation, cardiac output and left atrial volume were quantified.Results. Systolic pulmonary artery pressure was elevated in patients with left ventricular dysfunction (51 ± 14 mm Hg [mean ± SD]), but the range was wide (23 to 87 mm Hg). Of the numerous variables correlating significantly with systolic pulmonary artery pressure, the strongest were mitral deceleration time (r = −0.61, p = 0.0001; odds ratio of pulmonary pressure ≥50 mm Hg [95% confidence interval] if <150 ms, 48.8 [14.8 to 161]) and mitral effective regurgitant orifice (r = 0.50, p = 0.0001; odds ratio [95% confidence interval] if ≥20 mm2, 5.9 [2.3 to 15.5]). In multivariate analysis, these two variables were the strongest predictors of systolic pulmonary artery pressure in association with age (p = 0.005). Ejection fraction or end-systolic volume was not an independent predictor of pulmonary artery pressure.Conclusions. Pulmonary hypertension is frequent and highly variable in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. It is not independently related to the degree of left ventricular systolic dysfunction but is strongly associated with diastolic dysfunction (shorter mitral deceleration time) and the degree of functional mitral regurgitation (larger effective regurgitant orifice). These results emphasize the importance of assessing diastolic function and quantifying mitral regurgitation in patients with left ventricular dysfunction.(J Am Coll Cardiol 1997;29:153–9)

    The high brightness electron LINAC of the Compton Gamma Source at the ELI Nuclear Physics facility in Roma- nia is accelerating a train of 32 bunches with a nominal total charge of 250 pC and nominal spacing of 16 ns . To achieve the design gamma flux, all the bunches along the train must have the designed Twiss parameters. Beam sizes are mea- sured with optical transition radiation monitors, allowing a quadrupole scan for Twiss parameters measurements. Since focusing the whole bunch train on the screen may lead to permanent screen damage, we investigate non-conventional scans such as scans around a maximum of the beam size or scans with a controlled minimum spot size.     Local treatment with electrochemotherapy of superficial angiosarcomas: Efficacy and safety results from a multi-institutional retrospective study

    Background: Angiosarcoma is an aggressive vascular neoplasm with a high propensity for local recurrence. Electrochemotherapy is an emerging skin-directed therapy, exerting prominent cytotoxic activity, and antivascular effects. Its efficacy in angiosarcoma has not been investigated. Methods: This multicenter retrospective analysis reviewed patients who underwent electrochemotherapy from 2007 to 2014 for superficial advanced angiosarcomas. Bleomycin was administered intravenously and delivered within tumors by means of percutaneously applied electric pulses, according to the European Standard Operating Procedures for Electrochemotherapy. Tumor assessment was performed using RECIST (version 1.1). Toxicity (CTCAE, v4.0) and local progression-free survival (LPFS) were also evaluated. Results: Nineteen patients (13 with locally advanced and 6 with metastatic angiosarcomas) were treated. Tumor sites were: scalp (n¼5), breast(n¼8), other skin sites (n¼3), and soft tissue (n¼3). Target lesions (n¼54) ranged in size from 1.5 to 2.5 cm (median, 2 cm). Treatment was well tolerated. After 2 months, an objective response was observed in 12/19 (63%) patients, complete in 8 (42%). One-year LPFS within treatment field was 68%. Local symptom improvement included palliation of bleeding (5/19 patients) and pain relief (6/19 patients). Conclusions: Electrochemotherapy may represent a new locoregional treatment for selected patients with superficial angiosarcomas

    Dietary chia seed induced changes in hepatic transcription factors and their target lipogenic and oxidative enzyme activities in dyslipidaemic insulin-resistant rats

    The present study analyses the effect of dietary chia seed rich in n-3 a-linolenic acid on the mechanisms underlying dyslipidaemia and liver steatosis developed in rats fed a sucrose-rich diet (SRD) for either 3 weeks or 5 months. The key hepatic enzyme activities such as fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1) and fatty acid oxidase (FAO) involved in lipid metabolism and the protein mass levels of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) and PPARa were studied. (1) For 3 weeks, Wistar rats were fed either a SRD with 11% of maize oil (MO) as dietary fat or a SRD in which chia seed replaced MO (SRD þ Chia). (2) A second group of rats were fed a SRD for 3 months. Afterwards, half the rats continued with the SRD while for the other half, MO was replaced by chia for 2 months (SRD þ Chia). In a control group, maize starch replaced sucrose. Liver TAG and the aforementioned parameters were analysed in all groups. The replacement of MO by chia in the SRD prevented (3 weeks) or improved/normalised (5 months) increases in dyslipidaemia, liver TAG, FAS, ACC and G-6-PDH activities, and increased FAO and CPT-1 activities. Protein levels of PPARa increased, and the increased mature form of SREBP-1 protein levels in the SRD was normalised by chia in both protocols (1 and 2). The present study provides new data regarding some key mechanisms related to the fate of hepatic fatty acid metabolism that seem to be involved in the effect of dietary chia seed in preventing and normalising/ improving dyslipidaemia and liver steatosis in an insulin-resistant rat model.Fil: Rossi, Andrea Silvana.     Efficient plasma wakefield acceleration simulations via kinetic-hydro code

    Start-to-end simulations are needed for sensitivity stud- ies and online analysis of experimental data of the Plasma Wakefield Acceleration experiment COMB at SPARC_LAB facility, Frascati (Italy). Ad hoc tools are needed for the plasma section modeling. Particle in cell codes are the most widely used tools for this purpose, but they suffer from the considerable amount of computational resources they re- quire. We seek for a simple, portable, quick-to-run approach. For this purpose we introduce a time-explicit cylindrical hybrid fluid-kinetic code: Architect. The beam particles are treated with PIC-like kinetic approach, while the plasma wake is treated as a fluid. Since the number of computational particles used by the hybrid model is significantly reduced with respect of full PIC codes with the same number of di- mensions, the time required for a simulation is reduced as well
