Design guidelines for more engaging electronic books: insights from a cooperative inquiry study
This paper presents the results of a cooperative inquiry study aimed at developing a prototype of enhanced eBook for leisure reading. Together with a group of 9 to 11 years old children we explored various design ideas and, starting from these ideas, we developed the eBook prototype and elaborated a shortlist of recommendations. The paper aims to extend the research on the design of children's eBooks with a set of six guidelines that are intended to help designers in creating better and more engaging eBooks
Antioxidant status in acute stroke patients and patients at stroke risk
Background and Purpose: Antioxidant enzymes like copper/ zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and gluthatione peroxidase (GSHPx) are part of intracellular protection mechanisms to overcome oxidative stress and are known to be activated in vascular diseases and acute stroke. We investigated the differences of antioxidant capacity in acute stroke and stroke risk patients to elucidate whether the differences are a result of chronic low availability in arteriosclerosis and stroke risk or due to changes during acute infarction. Methods: Antioxidant enzymes were examined in 11 patients within the first hours and days after acute ischemic stroke and compared to risk- and age-matched patients with a history of stroke in the past 12 months ( n = 17). Antioxidant profile was determined by measurement of glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), SOD, GSHPx and minerals known to be involved in antioxidant enzyme activation like selenium, iron, copper and zinc. Results: In comparison to stroke risk patients, patients with acute ischemic stroke had significant changes of the GSH system during the first hours and days after the event: GSH was significantly elevated in the first hours (p < 0.01) and GSHPx was elevated 1 day after the acute stroke (p < 0.05). Selenium, a cofactor of GSHPx, was decreased (p < 0.01). GSHPx levels were negatively correlated with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores on admission (r = - 0.84, p < 0.001) and NIHSS scores after 7 days ( r = - 0.63, p < 0.05). MDA levels showed a trend for elevation in the first 6 h after the acute stroke ( p = 0.07). No significant differences of SOD, iron, copper nor zinc levels could be identified. Conclusions: Differences of antioxidant capacity were found for the GSH system with elevation of GSH and GSHPx after acute stroke, but not for other markers. The findings support the hypothesis that changes of antioxidant capacity are part of acute adaptive mechanisms during acute stroke. Copyright (C) 2004 S. Karger AG, Basel
Features of water chemical composition of oligotrophic and eutrophic bogs in the South of the Tomsk region
On the basis of the actual material the analysis of chemical composition of bog waters in the territory of the South of the Tomsk region is carried out. The data on average concentration of macro and trace components, organic matter, pH of bog waters are obtained. Significant distinctions in a chemical composition of surface water for different types of bogs are revealed. The composition and macrostructure of humic acids by the example of eutrophic bogs is studied

Population Pharmacokinetics and Exposure–Response Analysis for the Phase 3 COSMIC-311 Trial of Cabozantinib for Radioiodine-Refractory Differentiated Thyroid Cancer
Background and Objective
In the USA, cabozantinib was approved for the treatment of patients aged ≥ 12 years with radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) who progressed on prior vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFR)-targeted therapy based on the Phase 3 COSMIC-311 trial, which evaluated cabozantinib 60 mg/day versus placebo. Approved dosing is 60 mg/day for adults and for pediatric patients aged ≥ 12 years with body surface area (BSA) ≥ 1.2 m2, and 40 mg/day for pediatric patients aged ≥ 12 years with BSA \u3c 1.2 m2. This report describes a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) and exposure–response analysis of COSMIC-311. Methods
A PopPK model was developed using concentration-time data from COSMIC-311 and 6 other cabozantinib studies. The final (full) PopPK model was used to simulate the effect of sex, body weight, race, and patient population. For exposure–response analysis, derived datasets from COSMIC-311 were constructed for time-to-event analyses of progression-free survival (PFS) and safety endpoints. Results
The PopPK analysis included 4746 cabozantinib PK samples from 1745 patients and healthy volunteers. Body weight had minimal impact on cabozantinib exposure but increasing body weight was associated with increased apparent volume of distribution. Based on model-based simulation, adolescents \u3c 40 kg had higher maximum plasma concentration at steady state of cabozantinib 60 mg/day compared to adults. Allometric scaling simulation in adolescents \u3c 40 kg demonstrated higher exposure with 60 mg/day relative to adults receiving the same dose, while exposure with 40 mg/day in adolescents \u3c 40 kg was similar to 60 mg/day in adults. The exposure–response analysis included 115 patients. There was no clear relationship between PFS or dose modification and cabozantinib exposure. A statistically significant relationship was demonstrated for cabozantinib exposure and hypertension (Grade ≥ 3) and fatigue/asthenia (Grade ≥ 3). Conclusions
These results support the dosing strategy implemented in COSMIC-311 and the BSA-based label recommendations for adolescents. The cabozantinib dose should be reduced to manage adverse events as indicated

Benefits and pitfalls of multimedia and interactive features in technology-enhanced storybooks:A meta-analysis
A meta-analysis was conducted on the effects of technology-enhanced stories for young children’s literacy development when compared to listening to stories in more traditional settings like storybook reading. A small but significant additional benefit of technology was found for story comprehension (g+ = 0.17) and expressive vocabulary (g+ = 0.20), based on data from 2,147 children in 43 studies. When investigating the different characteristics of technology-enhanced stories, multimedia features like animated pictures, music, and sound effects were found beneficial. In contrast, interactive elements like hotspots, games, and dictionaries were found to be distracting. Especially for children disadvantaged because of less stimulating family environments, multimedia features were helpful and interactive features were detrimental. Findings are discussed from the perspective of cognitive processing theories
