TESS Discovery of an ultra-short-period planet around the nearby M dwarf LHS 3844
Data from the newly-commissioned \textit{Transiting Exoplanet Survey
Satellite} (TESS) has revealed a "hot Earth" around LHS 3844, an M dwarf
located 15 pc away. The planet has a radius of and
orbits the star every 11 hours. Although the existence of an atmosphere around
such a strongly irradiated planet is questionable, the star is bright enough
(, ) for this possibility to be investigated with transit and
occultation spectroscopy. The star's brightness and the planet's short period
will also facilitate the measurement of the planet's mass through Doppler
spectroscopy.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to ApJ Letters. This letter makes use

Antiprogestin mifepristone inhibits the growth of cancer cells of reproductive and non-reproductive origin regardless of progesterone receptor expression

Abstract

Background

Mifepristone (MF) has been largely used in reproductive medicine due to its capacity to modulate the progesterone receptor (PR). The study of MF has been expanded to the field of oncology; yet it remains unclear whether the expression of PR is required for MF to act as an anti-cancer agent. Our laboratory has shown that MF is a potent inhibitor of ovarian cancer cell growth. In this study we questioned whether the growth inhibitory properties of MF observed in ovarian cancer cells would translate to other cancers of reproductive and non-reproductive origin and, importantly, whether its efficacy is related to the expression of cognate PR.

Methods

Dose-response experiments were conducted with cancer cell lines of the nervous system, breast, prostate, ovary, and bone. Cultures were exposed to vehicle or increasing concentrations of MF for 72 h and analysed for cell number and cell cycle traverse, and hypodiploid DNA content characteristic of apoptotic cell death. For all cell lines, expression of steroid hormone receptors upon treatment with vehicle or cytostatic doses of MF for 24 h was studied by Western blot, whereas the activity of the G1/S regulatory protein Cdk2 in both treatment groups was monitored <it>in vitro </it>by the capacity of Cdk2 to phosphorylate histone H1.

Results

MF growth inhibited all cancer cell lines regardless of tissue of origin and hormone responsiveness, and reduced the activity of Cdk2. Cancer cells in which MF induced G1 growth arrest were less susceptible to lethality in the presence of high concentrations of MF, when compared to cancer cells that did not accumulate in G1. While all cancer cell lines were growth inhibited by MF, only the breast cancer MCF-7 cells expressed cognate PR.

Conclusions

Antiprogestin MF inhibits the growth of different cancer cell lines with a cytostatic effect at lower concentrations in association with a decline in the activity of the cell cycle regulatory protein Cdk2, and apoptotic lethality at higher doses in association with increased hypodiploid DNA content. Contrary to common opinion, growth inhibition of cancer cells by antiprogestin MF is not dependent upon expression of classical, nuclear PR.</p
The First Habitable Zone Earth-Sized Planet From TESS II: Spitzer Confirms TOI-700 d
We present Spitzer 4.5 μm observations of the transit of TOI-700 d, a habitable-zone Earth-sized planet in a multiplanet system transiting a nearby M-dwarf star (TIC 150428135, 2MASS J06282325–6534456). TOI-700 d has a radius of 1.144^(+0.062)_(-0.061) R⊕ and orbits within its host star's conservative habitable zone with a period of 37.42 days (T_(eq) ~ 269 K). TOI-700 also hosts two small inner planets (R_b = 1.037^(+0.0065)_(-0.064) R⊕ and R_c = 2.65^(+0.16)_(-0.15) R⊕) with periods of 9.98 and 16.05 days, respectively. Our Spitzer observations confirm the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) detection of TOI-700 d and remove any remaining doubt that it is a genuine planet. We analyze the Spitzer light curve combined with the 11 sectors of TESS observations and a transit of TOI-700 c from the LCOGT network to determine the full system parameters. Although studying the atmosphere of TOI-700 d is not likely feasible with upcoming facilities, it may be possible to measure the mass of TOI-700 d using state-of-the-art radial velocity (RV) instruments (expected RV semiamplitude of ~70 cm s⁻¹)
TOI-4010: A System of Three Large Short-Period Planets With a Massive Long-Period Companion
We report the confirmation of three exoplanets transiting TOI-4010
(TIC-352682207), a metal-rich K dwarf observed by TESS in Sectors 24, 25, 52,
and 58. We confirm these planets with HARPS-N radial velocity observations and
measure their masses with 8 - 12% precision. TOI-4010 b is a sub-Neptune ( days, , ) in the hot Neptune desert, and is one of the
few such planets with known companions. Meanwhile, TOI-4010 c ( days,
, ) and TOI-4010 d ( days, , )
are similarly-sized sub-Saturns on short-period orbits. Radial velocity
observations also reveal a super-Jupiter-mass companion called TOI-4010 e in a
long-period, eccentric orbit ( days and based on
available observations). TOI-4010 is one of the few systems with multiple
short-period sub-Saturns to be discovered so far.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, published in A

TESS Spots a Compact System of Super-Earths around the Naked-eye Star HR 858
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations have revealed a compact multiplanet system around the sixth-magnitude star HR 858 (TIC 178155732, TOI 396), located 32 pc away. Three planets, each about twice the size of Earth, transit this slightly evolved, late F-type star, which is also a member of a visual binary. Two of the planets may be in mean motion resonance. We analyze the TESS observations, using novel methods to model and remove instrumental systematic errors, and combine these data with follow-up observations taken from a suite of ground-based telescopes to characterize the planetary system. The HR 858 planets are enticing targets for precise radial velocity observations, secondary eclipse spectroscopy, and measurements of the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect
TOI-1130: A photodynamical analysis of a hot Jupiter in resonance with an inner low-mass planet
The TOI-1130 is a known planetary system around a K-dwarf consisting of a gas giant planet, TOI-1130 c on an 8.4-day orbit that is accompanied by an inner Neptune-sized planet, TOI-1130 b, with an orbital period of 4.1 days. We collected precise radial velocity (RV) measurements of TOI-1130 with the HARPS and PFS spectrographs as part of our ongoing RV follow-up program. We performed a photodynamical modeling of the HARPS and PFS RVs, along with transit photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP). We determined the planet masses and radii of TOI-1130 b and TOI-1130 c to be Mb = 19.28 \ub1 0.97M⊕ and Rb = 3.56 \ub1 0.13 R⊕, and Mc = 325.59 \ub1 5.59M⊕ and Rc = 13.32-1.41+1.55 R⊕, respectively. We have spectroscopically confirmed the existence of TOI-1130 b, which had previously only been validated. We find that the two planets have orbits with small eccentricities in a 2:1 resonant configuration. This is the first known system with a hot Jupiter and an inner lower mass planet locked in a mean-motion resonance. TOI-1130 belongs to the small, yet growing population of hot Jupiters with an inner low-mass planet that poses a challenge to the pathway scenario for hot Jupiter formation. We also detected a linear RV trend that is possibly due to the presence of an outer massive companion
TESS spots a mini-neptune interior to a hot saturn in the TOI-2000 system
Hot jupiters (P 60 ) are almost always found
alone around their stars, but four out of hundreds known have inner companion
planets. These rare companions allow us to constrain the hot jupiter's
formation history by ruling out high-eccentricity tidal migration. Less is
known about inner companions to hot Saturn-mass planets. We report here the
discovery of the TOI-2000 system, which features a hot Saturn-mass planet with
a smaller inner companion. The mini-neptune TOI-2000 b (, ) is in a 3.10-day
orbit, and the hot saturn TOI-2000 c (, ) is in a
9.13-day orbit. Both planets transit their host star TOI-2000 (TIC 371188886, V
= 10.98, TESS magnitude = 10.36), a metal-rich ([Fe/H] =
) G dwarf 174 pc away. TESS observed the two planets
in sectors 9-11 and 36-38, and we followed up with ground-based photometry,
spectroscopy, and speckle imaging. Radial velocities from CHIRON, FEROS, and
HARPS allowed us to confirm both planets by direct mass measurement. In
addition, we demonstrate constraining planetary and stellar parameters with
MIST stellar evolutionary tracks through Hamiltonian Monte Carlo under the PyMC
framework, achieving higher sampling efficiency and shorter run time compared
to traditional Markov chain Monte Carlo. Having the brightest host star in the
V band among similar systems, TOI-2000 b and c are superb candidates for
atmospheric characterization by the JWST, which can potentially distinguish
whether they formed together or TOI-2000 c swept along material during
migration to form TOI-2000 b.Comment: v3 adds RV frequency analysis; 25 pages, 11 figures, 14 tables;
