    Topological Vertex, String Amplitudes and Spectral Functions of Hyperbolic Geometry

    We discuss the homological aspects of the connection between quantum string generating function and the formal power series associated to the dimensions of chains and homologies of suitable Lie algebras. Our analysis can be considered as a new straightforward application of the machinery of modular forms and spectral functions (with values in the congruence subgroup of SL(2,Z)SL(2,{\mathbb Z})) to the partition functions of Lagrangian branes, refined vertex and open string partition functions, represented by means of formal power series that encode Lie algebra properties. The common feature in our examples lies in the modular properties of the characters of certain representations of the pertinent affine Lie algebras and in the role of Selberg-type spectral functions of an hyperbolic three-geometry associated with qq-series in the computation of the string amplitudes.Comment: Revised version.     Clinical and Radiological Evaluation in Intra-Articular Distal Radial Fracture: Operative Treatment with Open Reduction Internal Fixation Using K-Wire and Bone Graft Compared with Non-operative Treatment Using Casting in Women Above 50 Years Old in Soehar

    Introduction.The incidence of distal radius fractures is increasing together with the average age of population. Intra-articular incongruity is the most probable cause of unsatisfactory outcome of distal radius fractures. There is much debate regarding the optimal treatment of displaced, unstable distal radius fractures in the elderly. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare outcome for elderly patients with intra-articular distal radial fracture who were treated with or without surgical intervention. Materials and methods. This cross sectional study examined patients over the age of fifty years old who were treated with or without surgery for intra-articular distal radial fracture. Patients who underwent non-operative treatment were treated with closed reduction and below elbow cast for six weeks. Patients who underwent surgery were treated with criss-cross K-wire and bone graft. Baseline radiographs with Scheck's score and functional scores with Mayo wrist score were obtained prior to treatment. Outcomes at fixed time points were compared between groups with standard statistical methods.Results.There are 27 patients intra-articular distal radial fracture between January to July 2011. 17 patients were treated conservatively with closed reduction and below elbow cast and 10 patients were treated operatively with criss-cross k-wire and bone graft. There is no significance differences between two groups in term of Scheck's score and Mayo wrist score.Conclusions.Both non-operative treatment with closed reduction and below elbow cast and operative treatment using criss-cross K-wire and bone graft provides good results in terms of radiological dan functional outcome in women patients older than 50 years old with intra-articular distal radius fracture

    Recuperação pós-eletroconvulsoterapia: comparação entre propofol, etomidato e tiopental

    OBJECTIVES: To compare post anesthetic time for patient recovery after electroconvulsive therapy, as measured by the post anesthetic Recovery Score of Aldrete and Kroulik, using three different types of hypnotic drugs (propofol, etomidate and thiopental). METHOD: Thirty patients were randomized to receive one of the three drugs (n = 10 in each group), during a course of electroconvulsive therapy treatment. Patients and raters were blinded to which drug was received. Main treatment characteristics were recorded (as total electric charge received seizure threshold, number of treatments, and the mean time for recovery) along the whole treatment. RESULTS: Thiopental and propofol were associated with a significance increase in charge needed to induce a seizure (p < 0.0001) when compared to etomidate, as well as a significant decrease of time for recovery (p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that, although there seems to be no difference in the clinical outcome across these three drugs, propofol offers the best recovery profile. However, it makes a higher mean electric charge necessary.OBJETIVOS: Comparar o tempo de recuperação dos pacientes após eletroconvulsoterapia avaliada com a escala de recuperação pós-anestésica de Aldrete e Kroulik, utilizando três tipos de medicações anestésicas (propofol, etomidato and tiopental). MÉTODO: Trinta pacientes foram randomizados para receber uma das medicações (n = 10 em cada grupo) durante uma série de tratamentos com eletroconvulsoterapia. Os pacientes e o examinador ficaram cegos para o tipo de anestésico utilizado. As principais características do tratamento foram avaliadas (como carga total de eletricidade recebida, limiar convulsivo, número de sessões e o tempo médio para recuperação) ao longo de toda a série de tratamentos. RESULTADOS: Tiopental e propofol se associaram a um aumento significativo na carga elétrica total utilizada (p < 0,0001) quando comparados com etomidato, bem como uma diminuição significativa no tempo de recuperação pós-anestésica (p = 0,042). CONCLUSÕES: Estes achados sugerem que, apesar de não haver diferença na evolução clínica entre os três grupos estudados, a droga propofol oferece o melhor perfil de recuperação apesar de requerer uma carga elétrica média maior

    Fault accommodation controller under Markovian jump linear systems with asynchronous modes

    We tackle the fault accommodation control (FAC) in the Markovian jump linear system (MJLS) framework for the discrete-time domain, under the assumption that it is not possible to access the Markov chain mode. This premise brings some challenges since the controllers are no longer allowed to depend on the Markov chain, meaning that there is an asynchronism between the system and the controller modes. To tackle this issue, a hidden Markov chain ((Formula presented.), (Formula presented.)) is used where θ(k) denotes the Markov chain mode, and (Formula presented.) denotes the estimated mode. The main novelty of this work is the design of H∞ and H2 FAC under the MJLS framework considering partial observation of the Markov chain. Both designs are obtained via bilinear matrix inequalities optimization problems, which are solved using coordinate descent algorithm. As secondary results, we present simulations using a two-degree of freedom serial flexible joint robot to illustrate the viability of the proposed approach

    3D scaffolds to model the hematopoietic stem cell niche: applications and perspectives

    Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are responsible for the production of blood and immune cells during life. HSC fate decisions are dependent on signals from specialized microenvironments in the bone marrow, termed niches. The HSC niche is a tridimensional environment that comprises cellular, chemical, and physical elements. Introductorily, we will revise the current knowledge of some relevant elements of the niche. Despite the importance of the niche in HSC function, most experimental approaches to study human HSCs use bidimensional models. Probably, this contributes to the failure in translating many in vitro findings into a clinical setting. Recreating the complexity of the bone marrow microenvironment in vitro would provide a powerful tool to achieve in vitro production of HSCs for transplantation, develop more effective therapies for hematologic malignancies and provide deeper insight into the HSC niche. We previously demonstrated that an optimized decellularization method can preserve with striking detail the ECM architecture of the bone marrow niche and support HSC culture. We will discuss the potential of this decellularized scaffold as HSC niche model. Besides decellularized scaffolds, several other methods have been reported to mimic some characteristics of the HSC niche.     Gain-Scheduled Fault Detection Filter For Discrete-time LPV Systems

    The present work investigates a fault detection problem using a gain-scheduled filter for discrete-time Linear Parameter Varying systems. We assume that we cannot directly measure the scheduling parameter but, instead, it is estimated. On the one hand, this assumption imposes the challenge that the fault detection filter should perform properly even when using an inexact parameter. On the other, it avoids the burden associated with designing a complex estimation process for this parameter. We propose three design approaches: the H2{\mathcal {H}_{2}} , H{\mathcal {H}_{\infty }} , and mixed H2/H{\mathcal {H}_{2}} / {\mathcal {H}_{\infty }} gain-scheduled Fault Detection Filters designed via Linear Matrix Inequalities. We also provide numerical simulations to illustrate the applicability and performance of the proposed novel methods

    Psychogenetics of Turner syndrome: an investigation of 28 subjects and respective controls using the Bender test and Piagetian scales

    Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Piagetian scales and the Bender visual motor gestalt test (BT) were applied to 28 subjects with universal 45, X Turner syndrome (TS), and their respective controls, in order to investigate their cognitive performance. Dermatoglyphics were also analyzed to obtain clues concerning embryological changes that may have appeared during development of the nervous system and could be associated with cognitive performance of TS patients. Dermatoglyphic pattern distribution was similar to that reported in previous studies of TS individuals: ulnar loops in the digital patterns and finger ridge, a-b, and A'-d counts were more frequent, while arch and whorl patterns were less frequent compared to controls. However, we did not find higher frequencies of hypothenar pattern, maximum atd angle, and ulnarity index in our TS subjects, unlike other investigations. Furthermore, we found significant differences between TS and control T line index values. The BT scores were also lower in probands, as has been previously reported, revealing a neurocognitive deficit of visual motor perception in TS individuals, which could be due to an absence of, or deficiency in, cerebral hemispheric lateralization. However, TS subjects seemed to improve their performance on BT with age. Cognitive performance of the TS subjects was not significantly different from that of controls, confirming a previous study in which TS performance was found to be similar to that of the normal Brazilian population. There were significant correlations between BT scores and Piagetian scale levels with dermatoglyphic parameters. This association could be explained by changes in the common ectodermal origin of the epidermis and the central nervous system. TS subjects seem to succeed in compensating their spatial impairments in adapting their cognitive and social contacts.
