    Young People Are Not All the Same! The Theory of Planned Behaviour Applied to Food Waste Behaviour across Young Italian Generations

    To reach the SDG 12.3 target, understanding food waste behaviour (FWB) is fundamental, especially among young people. As future generations of parents, leaders, and citizens, they might potentially solve food sustainability issues and other matters arising from food waste. In such a context, this study extends the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) by including personal norms and environmental concern to explain and to predict the FWB of young Italians who belong to Generation Y and Generation Z. The theoretical model was empirically tested by administering a questionnaire to 322 Italian young people and by applying two distinct PLS-SEM models for Generation Y and Generation Z. Our results support not only the main relationship suggested by the TPB model with respect to FWB but also that, in affecting it, personal norms and environmental concern play different roles according to the generations. Understanding the mechanisms through which personal norms and environmental concern translate into reducing food waste is crucial to defining interventions aimed at changing youth behaviour. It could represent a relevant step towards preventing food waste and promoting sustainable management of food chains

    Sustainable Hydrogen Production via Sorption Enhanced Reforming of Complex Biorefinery Side Streams in a Fixed Bed Adiabatic Reactor

    In this work, sorption enhanced steam reforming is explored as a potential solution for the valorization of gaseous streams recovered from biorefinery hydrogenation processes. The hydrogen content of such streams limits the hydrocarbon conversion in conventional steam reforming due to thermodynamic and kinetic constraints. A previously developed 1D dynamic heterogeneous model of an adiabatic reactor was thus applied to evaluate the effect of H-2 dilution on the performance indicators of the sorption enhanced reforming process. The mathematical model analysis highlights that despite of CO2 capture by the sorbent favorably modifies the thermodynamics of syngas production, H-2 dilution worsens the performance of the sorption enhanced reforming of model H-2/CH4 streams with respect to pure CH4. Results show a drop of 17% for CH4 conversion and a reduction of 15.4% of the captured CO2 on passing from pure methane to a H-2/CH4 feed with a 40/60 molar ratio. However, on increasing the heat capacity of the bed, by replacing part of the sorbent with an inert heat carrier, better performances are calculated for the H-2/CH4 feed matching the pure CH4 case. The presence of C2+ hydrocarbons is assessed as well and the results show a significant improvement in the reformer's performance; in the case of a stream composed of H-2/CH4/C3H8 with a molar ratio 40/45/15, the total hydrocarbon conversion grows to 92.8%, CO2 capture ratio to 82.6%, and H-2 purity to 95.6%. The positive effect is associated with thermal factors that promote the reaction kinetics. Thus, the suitability of the sorption enhanced reforming technology to H-2-rich and C-poor streams is strictly composition dependent; by cofeeding of C2+ hydrocarbons, the process turns into a remarkable solution for converting gaseous streams in pure H-2

    Synthetic biology routes to bio-artificial intelligence

    The design of synthetic gene networks (SGNs) has advanced to the extent that novel genetic circuits are now being tested for their ability to recapitulate archetypal learning behaviours first defined in the fields of machine and animal learning. Here, we discuss the biological implementation of a perceptron algorithm for linear classification of input data. An expansion of this biological design that encompasses cellular 'teachers' and 'students' is also examined. We also discuss implementation of Pavlovian associative learning using SGNs and present an example of such a scheme and in silico simulation of its performance. In addition to designed SGNs, we also consider the option to establish conditions in which a population of SGNs can evolve diversity in order to better contend with complex input data. Finally, we compare recent ethical concerns in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and the future challenges raised by bio-artificial intelligence (BI)

    Chemotherapy and skin reactions.

    BACKGROUND:New chemotherapic agents and new protocols in oncology have led to an increasing survival rate in patients affected by tumors. However, this increased use has been accompanied by a growth in the incidence of cutaneous side effects and a worsening of patients' quality of life. Appropriate management of skin toxicity associated with chemotherapic agents is therefore necessary for suitable drug administration and to improve quality of life and clinical outcomes. METHODS: We have clinically examined 100 patients affected by cancer, determining type, frequency, treatment, and evolution of side effects related to chemotherapy. RESULTS: The prevalent cutaneous side effects in patients undergoing chemotherapy are skin rash, xerosis, pruritus, paronychia, hair abnormality, and mucositis. The clinical cases are reported in detail. CONCLUSION: Oncological therapies have become more selective and have low systemic toxicity because of their high specificity, but cutaneous side effects are common and may worsen the quality of life of these patients

    Enhancement of cytosine arabinoside-induced apoptosis in human myeloblastic leukemia cells by NFkB/Rel- specific decoy oligodeoxynucleotides

    The activity of NF-kB/Rel nuclear factors is known to inhibit apoptosis in various cell types. We investigated whether the subtraction of NF-kB/Rel activity influenced the response of 11 AML (M1, M2 and M4) patients’ cells to AraC. To this end we used a phosphorothioate double-stranded decoy oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) carrying the NF-kB/Rel- consensus sequence. Cell incubation with this ODN, but not its mutated (scrambled) form used as a control, resulted in abating the NF-kB/Rel nuclear levels in these cells, as verified by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) of cells’ nuclear extracts. We incubated the leukemic cells with AraC (32 or 1 mM), in either the absence or presence of the decoy or the scrambled ODN, and analyzed cell apoptosis. The spontaneous cell apoptosis detectable in the absence of AraC (,25%) was not modulated by the oligonucleotide presence in cell cultures. On the other hand, in 10 of the 11 samples tested, the decoy kB, but not the scrambled ODN significantly (P ,0.01 in a Student’s t test) enhanced cell apoptotic response to AraC. Such an effect was particularly remarkable at low AraC doses (1 mM). These findings indicate that NF-kB/Rel activity influences response to AraC in human primary myeloblastic cells, and suggests that the inhibition of NF-kB/Rel factors can improve the effect of chemotherapy in AM

    The influence of 'significant others' on persistent back pain and work participation: a qualitative exploration of illness perceptions

    Background Individual illness perceptions have been highlighted as important influences on clinical outcomes for back pain. However, the illness perceptions of 'significant others' (spouse/partner/close family member) are rarely explored, particularly in relation to persistent back pain and work participation. The aim of this study was to initiate qualitative research in this area in order to further understand these wider influences on outcome. Methods Semi-structured interviews based on the chronic pain version of the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised were conducted with a convenience sample of UK disability benefit claimants, along with their significant others (n=5 dyads). Data were analysed using template analysis. Results Significant others shared, and perhaps further reinforced, claimants' unhelpful illness beliefs including fear of pain/re-injury associated with certain types of work and activity, and pessimism about the likelihood of return to work. In some cases, significant others appeared more resigned to the permanence and negative inevitable consequences of the claimant's back pain condition on work participation, and were more sceptical about the availability of suitable work and sympathy from employers. In their pursuit of authenticity, claimants were keen to stress their desire to work whilst emphasising how the severity and physical limitations of their condition prevented them from doing so. In this vein, and seemingly based on their perceptions of what makes a 'good' significant other, significant others acted as a 'witness to pain', supporting claimants' self-limiting behaviour and statements of incapacity, often responding with empathy and assistance. The beliefs and responses of significant others may also have been influenced by their own experience of chronic illness, thus participants lives were often intertwined and defined by illness. Conclusions The findings from this exploratory study reveal how others and wider social circumstances might contribute both to the propensity of persistent back pain and to its consequences. This is an area that has received little attention to date, and wider support of these findings may usefully inform the design of future intervention programmes aimed at restoring work participation

    Managing Achilles Pain (the MAP study) – A process evaluation of data collection methods

    Background Process evaluations explore the way in which a study was conducted. The Managing Achilles Pain study (MAP study) had the primary aim of assessing the feasibility of the protocol for a future large longitudinal cohort study that would investigate the association and predictive relationship of self-efficacy, working alliance and expectations with outcome in the management of Achilles tendinopathy. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the processes conducted in the MAP study by exploring the acceptability of the study procedures from the participants' and physiotherapists' perspectives. Design A qualitative evaluation using semi-structured telephone interviews. Method All physiotherapists and participants who participated in the MAP study were invited. Data from physiotherapists (n = 6) and participants (n = 7) were transcribed and analysed using the Framework Approach. Findings From the physiotherapists' perspective 4 themes were identified relating to obstacles; (1) access to participants; (2) recall; (3) visibility; (4) time, and 4 themes were identified relating to facilitating success; (1) training; (2) motivation; (3) incentives; (4) simplicity. From the participants' perspective 2 themes were identified relating to obstacles; (1) information from the physiotherapist; (2) follow up, 3 themes were identified relating to facilitating success; (1) motivation; (2) website; (3) questionnaire, and 1 theme relating to unintended consequences of participating in the study; positive experience. Conclusions Although clinicians are enthused to be involved in research, organisational factors impact levels of engagement. Key influences to optimising the potential success of a study include the publicising of the study; optimising verbal recruitment strategies; and clarity in communication

    Mitochondrial and nuclear genes suggest that stony corals are monophyletic but most families of stony corals are not (Order Scleractinia, Class Anthozoa, Phylum Cnidaria)

    Modern hard corals (Class Hexacorallia; Order Scleractinia) are widely studied because of their fundamental role in reef building and their superb fossil record extending back to the Triassic. Nevertheless, interpretations of their evolutionary relationships have been in flux for over a decade. Recent analyses undermine the legitimacy of traditional suborders, families and genera, and suggest that a non-skeletal sister clade (Order Corallimorpharia) might be imbedded within the stony corals. However, these studies either sampled a relatively limited array of taxa or assembled trees from heterogeneous data sets. Here we provide a more comprehensive analysis of Scleractinia (127 species, 75 genera, 17 families) and various outgroups, based on two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase I, cytochrome b), with analyses of nuclear genes (ßtubulin, ribosomal DNA) of a subset of taxa to test unexpected relationships. Eleven of 16 families were found to be polyphyletic. Strikingly, over one third of all families as conventionally defined contain representatives from the highly divergent "robust" and "complex" clades. However, the recent suggestion that corallimorpharians are true corals that have lost their skeletons was not upheld. Relationships were supported not only by mitochondrial and nuclear genes, but also often by morphological characters which had been ignored or never noted previously. The concordance of molecular characters and more carefully examined morphological characters suggests a future of greater taxonomic stability, as well as the potential to trace the evolutionary history of this ecologically important group using fossils

    Multi-wavelength study of the gravitational lens system RXS J1131-1231: III. Long slit spectroscopy: micro-lensing probes the QSO structure

    (ABRIDGED) Aims: We discuss and characterize micro-lensing among the 3 brightest lensed images (A-B-C) of the gravitational lens system RXS J1131-1231 (a quadruply imaged AGN) by means of long slit optical and NIR spectroscopy. Qualitative constraints on the size of different emission regions are derived. Methods: We decompose the spectra into their individual emission components using a multi-component fitting approach. A complementary decomposition of the spectra enables us to isolate the macro-lensed fraction of the spectra independently of any spectral modelling. Results: -1. The data support micro-lensing de-amplification of images A and C. Not only is the continuum emission microlensed in those images but also a fraction of the Broad Line emitting Region (BLR).-2. Micro-lensing of a very broad component of MgII emission line suggests that the corresponding emission occurs in a region more compact than the other components of the emission line. -3. We find evidence that a large fraction of the FeII emission arises in the outer parts of the BLR. We also find very compact emitting region in the ranges 3080-3540 A and 4630-4800 A that is likely associated with FeII. -4. The OIII narrow emission line regions are partly spatially resolved. This enables us to put a lower limit of 110h^{-1} pc on their intrinsic size. -5. Analysis of MgII absorption found in the spectra indicates that the absorbing medium is intrinsic to the quasar, has a covering factor of 20%, and is constituted of small clouds homogeneously distributed in front of the continuum and BLRs. -6. Two neighbour galaxies are detected at redshifts z=0.10 and z=0.289. These galaxies are possible members of galaxy groups reported at those redshifts.Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics.
