An innovative solid liquid extraction technology: use of the naviglio extractor for the production of lemon liquor.

    Get PDF
This document is a review on solid-liquid extractive techniques and describes an innovative solid-liquid extraction technology using the Naviglio Extractor®. Also explained is an application for the production of alcoholic extract from lemon peel. The alcoholic extract, mixed with a sugar and water solution in the right proportions is used to make a well known Italian lemon liquor commonly named "limoncello". Lemon liquor is obtained utilizing the Naviglio Extractor®; the procedure used is fast and efficient and uses about half the weight of lemon peel per volume of ethyl alcohol used for the extraction of the odorous and taste responsible compounds, compared to the commonly used extraction procedures. To test the consumer’s preference and compare the taste of the liquor obtained with that obtained by peel maceration from the same lot of lemons and obtained using the traditional recipe, a consumer test has been carried out. One hundred people, chosen from among frequent consumers of limoncello, tasted the two lemon liquors, and evaluated intensity of aroma, colour, alcohol taste and sweetness. In about 81% of the preferences, the liquor obtained using the Naviglio Extractor® was preferred. The extraction process used allows the ethanol from used up lemon peel to be totally recovered so that these can be disposed of as non toxic waste or used in agriculture or as cattle feed

Time-domain analysis of RF and microwave autonomous circuits by vector fitting-based approach

    Get PDF
This work presents a new method for the analysis of RF and microwave autonomous circuits directly in the time-domain, which is the most effective approach at simulation level to evaluate nonlinear phenomena. For RF and microwave autonomous circuits, time-domain simulations usually experiment convergence problems or numerical inaccuracies due to the presence of distributed elements, preventing de-facto their use. The proposed solution is based on the Vector Fitting algorithm applied directly at circuit level. A case study relative to a RF hybrid oscillator is presented for practical demonstration and evaluation of performance reliability of the proposed method

On the Flux Linkage between Pancake Coils in Resonance-Type Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    Get PDF
This work presents a series representation for the mutual inductance of two coaxial pancake coils which remains accurate in non-quasi-static regime under the hypothesis that the current in the source coil is uniformly distributed. Making use of Gegenbauer's addition theorem and a term-by-term analytical integration, the mutual inductance between two generic turns belonging to distinct coils is expressed as a sum of spherical Hankel functions with algebraic coefficients. The accuracy and efficiency of the resulting expression is proved through pertinent numerical examples

Functional evaluation of the knee following ACL reconstruction: A complex dynamical systems perspective

    Get PDF
In sports, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are very frequent and, in most cases, it is necessary to resort to surgical reconstruction to restore the functionality and stability of the knee joint. For the experts, the fundamental clinical result is represented by the return to sport at the pre-injury level. Return to the sport, however, is complex and multifactorial. A functional asymmetry present after the resumption of sports activity is, in fact, a sign of a reduced ability of the knee to absorb dynamic forces. The dynamical systems theory (DST) applied to biological systems has emphasized the importance of the variability present in human movement, as a basis for the processes of adaptation to the surrounding environment. The human body is a complex and nonlinear system (a small input can produce a big change), therefore nonlinear analysis tools have been proposed to analyse its behaviour. This brief review provides an overview of the nonlinear analysis tools used in the past twenty years in the functional evaluation of the knee following ACL reconstruction. The analysis of kinematic variability of the knee provides important information on the changes in neuromuscular function that occur after the rupture and reconstruction of the ACL. This kind of analysis can lead to an understanding of the joint's ability to provide proprioceptive information and how the whole system processes them. The functional evaluation of the knee using nonlinear analysis tools could represent a new and more suitable functional measurement of the joint for the return to sport

Wireless Communication Protocols for Distributed Computing Environments

The distributed computing is an approach relying on the presence of multiple devices that can interact among them in order to perform a pervasive and parallel computing. This chapter deals with the communication protocol aiming to be used in a distributed computing scenario; in particular the considered computing infrastructure is composed by elements (nodes) able to consider specific application requests for the implementation of a service in a distributed manner according to the pervasive grid computing principle (Priol & Vanneschi, 2008; Vanneschi & Veraldi, 2007). In the classical grid computing paradigm, the processing nodes are high performance computers or multicore workstations, usually organized in clusters and interconnected through broadband wired communication networks with small delay (e.g., fiber optic, DSL lines). The pervasive grid computing paradigm overcomes these limitations allowing the development of distributed applications that can perform parallel computations using heterogeneous devices interconnected by different types of communication technologies. In this way, we can resort to a computing environment composed by fixed ormobile devices (e.g., smartphones, PDAs, laptops) interconnected through broadband wireless or wired networks where the devices are able to take part to a grid computing process. Suitable techniques for the pervasive grid computing should be able to discover and organize heterogeneous resources, to allow scaling an application according to the computing power, and to guarantee specific QoS profiles (Darby III & Tzeng, 2010; Roy & Das, 2009). In particular, aim of this chapter is to present the most important challenges for the communication point of view when forming a distributed network for performing parallel and distributed computing. The focus will be mainly on the resource discovery and computation scheduling on wireless not infrastructured networks by considering their capabilities in terms of reliability and adaptation when facing with heterogeneous computing requests
