The structure of emotion discourse: from Labovian to socio-cognitive models

This paper focuses on how narrators convey emotion in the structure of oral narrative discourse in Spanish. To this end, the structure of personal oral narratives of highly emotional events in a sample of radio narratives is analyzed from two different approaches: Labovian and socio-cognitive. This work shows, first, how the Labovian approach to personal oral narratives of “vivid” events is applied to emotionally charged texts and, second, how the theoretical concepts of mental spaces and conceptual integration theory, as well as the latest developments within socio-cognitive theories, can help to better understand the processes that, on the one hand, enable speakers to create bonds with the listener, and on the other hand, enable hearers to make sense of the apparently chaotic information presented in these particular types of narratives

Multi-element characterisation of carob, fig and almond liqueurs by MP-AES

Carob pod, fig and almond liqueurs are produced in various Mediterranean regions. This work reports the mineral content of these traditional beverages and evaluates the influence of the raw material. Twenty-five fruit liqueurs from 16 producers were analysed. A simple open-vessel sample mineralization by wet digestion using nitric acid-hydrogen peroxide (1:1) was used before spectrometric analysis. Nine essential elements (Cu, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Zn, Mn and P) and two non-essentials (Cd and Pb) were quantified by microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES). Carob liqueur presented the broader profile of minerals and was the only fruit liqueur containing iron (72.7% of samples), phosphorous, manganese and low levels of lead (in two of the 11 samples). Conversely, almond liqueurs contained the lowest mineral content with only five elements detected. Fruit liqueurs showed variability in mineral content even within the same liqueur, presumably as a consequence of the different manufacturing processes. Despite this variability, application of principal component analysis to essential mineral concentrations (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe and Zn) resulted in satisfactory classification (PC1 and PC2 accounting for 78.5% of the total variance) of the Portuguese liqueurs evaluated.SFRH/BPD/103086/2014info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

It is investigated the effects of the addition of three PPgMA, with different molecular weight and maleic anhydride content, on the structure, morphology, mechanical, thermal and antimicrobial properties and oxygen permeability of iPP/ZnO 98/2 wt% composite. The composition of iPP/PPgMA/ZnO composites is fixed at 88/10/2 wt%, that is, about 10 wt% of iPP is substituted with PPgMA. The composites are prepared via melt mixing by using a twin-screw extruder. The ZnO is obtained in a preindustrial scale spray pyrolysis platform. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy indicates that the ZnO particles, in all the ternary composites, react with maleic anhydride groups of PPgMA. From the analyses of the mechanical properties, permeability to oxygen and antibacterial activity agaist E.Coli, it is concluded that the best compatibiliser among the three is PPgMA with 1.4% of MA and Mw 65,000, but the antibacterial activity is much lower than that of the binary iPP/ZnO 98/2 wt%. Moreover, it is found that the antibacterial activity is more efficient for the film that presents clusters of the ZnO particles on the surface than the film with ZnO particles smaller and better distributed on the film surface, and embedded in it

Hyperglycemia in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes Leads to Persistent Inflammation and Tissue Damage Following Uveitis Due to Reduced Levels of Ciliary Body Heme Oxygenase-1

This study investigated the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and the endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in diabetic streptozotocin (STZ)-hyperglycemic rats. STZ-hyperglycemic rats had impaired levels of the enzyme HO-1 within the ciliary bodies if compared with the nondiabetic rats. STZ-hyperglycemic rats also predisposed the eye to produce high levels of both the cytokines IL-1β and CXCL8. Subsequent EIU further and significantly (P < .01) increased the cytokines production, an effect partly prevented by hemin treatment. Most importantly, hemin, an inducer of heme oxygenase expression and activity, recovered the huge number of infiltrated polymorphonuclear leukocytes PMN within the ciliary bodies associated with STZ-hyperglycemic state and EIU damage. Impairment of the stress-sensitive enzyme HO-1 in STZ-hyperglycemic rats increases and prolongs the inflammatory response to EIU

Environmental and/or work risk factors, lack of basic knowledge related to voice, its incorrect use, and a defective vocal model can lead teachers to develop occupational dysphonia. This study aimed to analyze studies focusing on occupational vocal disorders through a literature review. Articles published over a period of 11 years in periodicals indexed in the ScieLO library were searched according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Twenty articles related to teachers' vocal occupational disorders were found. We argue that intense vocal use should not harm professionals; the voice has to be pleasant to the speaker and correctly produced. The conclusion is that there is a scarcity of articles available at the studied library relating to teachers' voice disorders. Further studies need to be developed and disseminated so as to increase knowledge in the subject. Metals in Sediment Cores from Nine Coastal Lagoons in Central Vietnam

Problem statement: After being dramatically hit by war events, Vietnam is presently experiencing a huge economical and social development. However, very few data, relative to pollution levels and trends, are available for the correct management of critical areas such as coastal lagoons, where many economical activities are linked to high value environmental features. Approach: A set of sediment cores from nine coastal lagoons of central Vietnam (Lang Co, Truong Giang, An Khe, Nuoc Man, Nuoc Ngot, Thi Nai, O Loan, Thuy Trieu and Dam Nai) were sampled in 2008 and analyzed to assess metal and (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, U and Zn) and As levels and historical trends. Results: Concentrations are generally low, with the exception of As, which often exceeds ERL guidelines and Ni that does the same at O Loan. In some cases, concentrations-depth profiles account for recent increasing trends but surficial values are still low when compared to both international guidelines and polluted sediments all around the world. Sediment grain size seems to affect the depth distribution of a number of metals and when normalized to the content of silt and clay, values are particularly high at Dam Nai and Thi Nai, due to the very coarse composition of surficial sediments. Conclusion: Metal concentrations in lagoon sediments derive from the composition of rocks and soils in the watersheds. However, recent increasing trends need for further monitoring
