    How OEMs and Suppliers can face the Network Integration Challenges

    International audienceSystems integration is a major challenge in many industries. Systematic analysis of the complex integration effects, especially with respect to timing and performance, significantly improves the design process, enables optimizations, and increases the quality and profit of a product. And it helps to improve supply-chain communications. This paper surveys a set of interesting experiments we have conducted on a real-world automotive communication network using our new SymTA/S schedulability analysis technology. We demonstrate that, and how, analysis technology helps answering key integration questions, thereby carefully respecting the established business models

    Glassy dynamics in polyalcohols:intermolecular simplicity vs. intramolecular complexity

    Using depolarized light scattering, we have recently shown that structural relaxation in a broad range of supercooled liquids follows, to good approximation, a generic line shape with high-frequency power law . We now continue this study by investigating a systematic series of polyalcohols (PAs), frequently used as model-systems in glass-science, , because the width of their respective dielectric loss spectra varies strongly along the series. Our results reveal that the microscopic origin of the observed relaxation behavior varies significantly between different PAs: while short-chained PAs like glycerol rotate as more or less rigid entities and their light scattering spectra follow the generic shape, long-chained PAs like sorbitol display pronounced intramolecular dynamic contributions on the time scale of structural relaxation, leading to systematic deviations from the generic shape. Based on these findings we discuss an important limitation for observing the generic shape in a supercooled liquid: the dynamics that is probed needs to reflect the intermolecular dynamic heterogeneity, and must not be superimposed by effects of intramolecular dynamic heterogeneity

    Combination of GNSS and SLR observations using satellite co-locations

    Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) observations to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) satellites may be used for several purposes. On one hand, the range measurement may be used as an independent validation for satellite orbits derived solely from GNSS microwave observations. On the other hand, both observation types may be analyzed together to generate a combined orbit. The latter procedure implies that one common set of orbit parameters is estimated from GNSS and SLR data. We performed such a combined processing of GNSS and SLR using the data of the year 2008. During this period, two GPS and four GLONASS satellites could be used as satellite co-locations. We focus on the general procedure for this type of combined processing and the impact on the terrestrial reference frame (including scale and geocenter), the GNSS satellite antenna offsets (SAO) and the SLR range biases. We show that the combination using only satellite co-locations as connection between GNSS and SLR is possible and allows the estimation of SLR station coordinates at the level of 1-2cm. The SLR observations to GNSS satellites provide the scale allowing the estimation of GNSS SAO without relying on the scale of any a priori terrestrial reference frame. We show that the necessity to estimate SLR range biases does not prohibit the estimation of GNSS SAO. A good distribution of SLR observations allows a common estimation of the two parameter types. The estimated corrections for the GNSS SAO are 119mm and −13mm on average for the GPS and GLONASS satellites, respectively. The resulting SLR range biases suggest that it might be sufficient to estimate one parameter per station representing a range bias common to all GNSS satellites. The estimated biases are in the range of a few centimeters up to 5cm. Scale differences of 0.9ppb are seen between GNSS and SL

    ECOG and BMI as preoperative risk factors for severe postoperative complications in ovarian cancer patients: results of a prospective study (RISC-GYN—trial)

    Background: Accompanying co-morbidities in patients with ovarian cancer are of major relevance for scheduling debulking surgery, especially in the anesthesiological consultations. Aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of co-morbidities and patient characteristics on postoperative complications. Methods: Patients undergoing maximal cytoreductive surgery were prospectively enrolled from October 2015 to January 2017. Various variables were recorded, such as the Charlson comorbidity index, Eastern cooperative oncology group scale of performance status (ECOG PS) and the American society of anesthesiologists physical status classification system (ASA PS). Surgical complications were graded using the Clavien-Dindo criteria. Logistic regression models were used to analyze risk factors for severe postoperative complications. Results: Of 106 enrolled patients, 19 (17.9%) developed severe postoperative complications grade >= IIIb according to Clavien-Dindo criteria. In the multivariable regression analysis impaired (ECOG PS) > 1 (odds ratio OR) 13.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.74-102.30, p = 0.01), body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m(2) (OR 10.48, 95% CI 2.38-46.02, p = 0.002) along with the use of intraoperative norepinephrine > 0.11 mu g/kg/min (OR 4.69, 95% CI 1.13-19.46, p = 0.03) and intraoperative fresh frozen plasma (FFP) > 17 units (OR 4.11, 95% CI 1.12-15.14, p = 0.03) appeared as significant predictors of severe postoperative complications. Conclusion: We demonstrated that neither the presence of a certain comorbidity nor the summation of the co-morbidities were associated with adverse outcome. Patient characteristics, such as ECOG PS > 1 and obesity (BMI > 25 kg/m(2)), are highly predictive factors for severe postoperative complications. The analysis of intraoperative data showed that the need for more than > 0.11 mu g/kg/min of norepinephrine and transfusions of FFPs more than 17 units were strongly associated with severe postoperative complications

    The SAF-box domain of chromatin protein DEK

    DEK is an abundant chromatin protein in metazoans reaching copy numbers of several millions/nucleus. Previous work has shown that human DEK, a protein of 375 amino acids, has two functional DNA-binding domains, of which one resides in a central part of the molecule and contains sequences corresponding to the scaffold attachment factor-box (SAF-box) domain as found in a growing number of nuclear proteins. Isolated SAF-box peptides (amino acids 137–187) bind weakly to DNA in solution, but when many SAF-box peptides are brought into close proximity on the surface of Sephadex beads, cooperative effects lead to a high affinity to DNA. Furthermore, a peptide (amino acids 87–187) that includes a sequence on the N-terminal side of the SAF-box binds efficiently to DNA. This peptide prefers four-way junction DNA over straight DNA and induces supercoils in relaxed circular DNA just like the full-length DEK. Interestingly, however, the 87–187 amino acid peptide introduces negative supercoils in contrast to the full-length DEK, which is known to introduce positive supercoils. We found that two adjacent regions (amino acids 68–87 and 187–250) are necessary for the formation of positive supercoils. Our data contribute to the ongoing characterization of the abundant and ubiquitous DEK chromatin protein

    Results of a German wide survey towards current surgical approach in early stage cervical cancer NOGGO MONITOR 11

    Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become the standard approach in early stage cervical cancer (ECC). However, the recently published "LACC" trial and even others could show inferior PFS and OS of MIS compared to open radical hysterectomy. The results led to a widespread debate about the best surgical approach in ECC. The present survey aimed to get first insights after publication. NOGGO and AGE conducted a nationwide digital survey among 186 Gynecological Cancer Centers. Descriptive statistics and t-tests were performed using SPSS. A majority of the centers were of high expertise and/or experience in treatment of ECC and were highly aware of the LACC trial results. Trial quality and scientific value were rated as very good/good. However, still 40% would not change the standard of care to open surgery. Centers with higher volume and participating in clinical trials were more likely to change. This survey represents insights after the surprising results of recently published trials towards the surgical approach of ECC. There still seems to be a high need of future trials and possible explanations for the unexpected worse outcomes in the MIS group

    Revealing complex relaxation behavior of monohydroxy alcohols in a series of octanol isomers

    We investigate the reorientation dynamics of four octanol isomers with very different characteristics regarding the formation of hydrogen-bonded structures by means of photon-correlation spectroscopy (PCS) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. PCS is largely insensitive to orientational cross-correlations and straightforwardly probes the α-process dynamics, thus allowing us to disentangle the complex dielectric relaxation spectra. The analysis reveals an additional dielectric relaxation contribution on time scales between the structural α-process and the Debye process. In line with nuclear magnetic resonance results from the literature and recent findings from rheology experiments, we attribute this intermediate contribution to the dielectric signature of the O–H bond reorientation. Due to being incorporated into hydrogen-bonded suprastructures, the O–H bond dynamically decouples from the rest of the molecule. The relative relaxation strength of the resulting intermediate contribution depends on the respective position of the hydroxy group within the molecule and seems to vanish at sufficiently high temperatures, i.e., exactly when the overall tendency to form hydrogen bonded structures decreases. Furthermore, the fact that different octanol isomers share the same dipole density allows us to perform an in-depth analysis of how dipolar cross-correlations appear in dielectric loss spectra. We find that dipolar cross-correlations are not solely manifested by the presence of the slow Debye process but also scale the relaxation strength of the self-correlation contribution depending on the Kirkwood factor

    Objectives: Can we identify predictive factors for the group of so-called multiple users (MU; 4 and more uses of an emergency department [ED] in the past 12 months)? Are people with a migration background more likely to be classified in the MU group? Methodology: Included were consecutive patients who visited three EDs in Berlin from July 2017 to July 2018. Using a questionnaire, diseases, reasons for visiting the ED and socioeconomic factors were recorded. Comparisons between migrants (1st generation), their descendants (2nd generation) and nonmigrants were assessed using logistic regression. Results: A total of 2339 patients were included in the evaluation (repeat rate 56%), of which 901 had a migration background. Young women (<30 years), chronically ill, pregnant women, patients with severe complaints and people with (self-assessed) moderate and poor health quality as well as those without medical referral had a greater chance of multiple use of ED. Conclusion: MU burden the already increasing patient volume of ED. However, they represent a heterogeneous group of patients, among whom people with a migration background are not common. Further research is warranted to better understand the factors that lead to frequent use and to develop effective strategies to address the complex health needs of MUs

    Electrification using Decentralized Micro Hydropower Plants in North-eastern Afghanistan

    Electricity supply database from the Afghan national authority for electricity supply shows that about only 20% of the population in Afghanistan had access to grid electricity by 2010. The national utility has a total capacity of about 842 MW, out of which about 696 MW was operational. Additionally, many decentralized units (Micro Hydropower (MHP) plants, diesel generators and solar home systems) supply electricity to about 7% of the population. The donors supported National Solidarity Programme (NSP) has promoted hundreds of rural electrification projects. MHP plants are the major renewable energy based projects among them. In order to identify the operational status of installed MHP plants in four North-eastern provinces (i.e. Badakhshan, Baghlan, Balkh and Takhar) and to assess their socio-economic impacts, an extensive field monitoring had been carried out. The major parameters studied were spatial distribution of MHP plants, investment costs, operational models, end user electricity tariffs, productive use of electricity, community satisfaction, etc. Altogether, 421 MHP installations (about 11 MW installed capacity) were visited. The outcomes obtained from those surveys are presented in detail in this paper
