Peer Reviewe

Numerical Algorithms for the Analysis of Initial Configuration in a Railway Catenary Structure and Its Code Implementation: A Software Tool CALPE

    Get PDF
To obtain the best operating conditions in a railway infrastructure, as the pantograph/catenary system, is a priority issue in modern railways, for a correct management and the best performance of this infrastructure. Although most of the published works on this subject are oriented to solving dynamic problems, in order to successfully address these problems a previous static study is necessary. In this paper, we present a methodology for the study of the forces in a railway catenary, according to the equations of statics equilibrium. The results of this work have allowed us to develop two iterative algorithms that calculate a simple and computationally effective lengths of the droppers, which is crucial to determine the initial structural configuration of the catenary parameter. The obtained results have led us to the implementation of a tool to obtain very precise assemblies with significant savings in maintenance, therefore still being used by ADIF, the Spanish railway administration of railways infrastructures

Complementary regioselective synthesis of iminohydantoins from isocyanoacetamides controlled by the substituent on the amide group has been described. 4-Iminohydantoins were the major products when the starting materials were N-alkyl isocyanoamides, whereas 2-iminohydantoins were the major products with N-aryl isocyanoamides.

    Get PDF
In the framework of new degrees in Computer Science, it is desirable to establish some mechanism to let us collect some information about our students' commitment to our courses. On the subject level, this information may be useful for the teaching staff to determine the degree of success of this initial temporary planning. In a high level point of view, the data collected provide the course coordination with an idea of the total workload of students and it contributes to identify potential peaks (or valleys) of work throughout the semester. This work presents a surveybased system to obtain and register the efforts of our Computer Engineering students from the School of Computer Engineering of Albacete. It also introduces and discusses some of the results obtained during the academic year 2012/13

Agricultural products from algal biomass grown in piggery wastewater: A techno-economic analysis

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe intensification of livestock activities lead to an increase in waste generation with high content of nutrients, as is the case of piggery wastewater. However, this type of residue can be used as culture media for algae cultivation in thin-layer cascade photobioreactors to reduce its environment impact and produce a valorizable algal biomass. Biostimulants were produced by enzymatic hydrolysis and ultrasonication of microalgal biomass, using membranes (Scenario 1) or centrifugation (Scenario 2) as harvesting methods. The co-production of biopesticides by solvent extraction was also evaluated using membranes (Scenario 3) or centrifugation (Scenario 4). The four scenarios were analyzed by a technoeconomic assessment estimating the total annualized equivalent cost and the production cost, i.e., the minimum selling price. Centrifugation provided biostimulants approximately 4 times more concentrated than membranes, but with higher expense due to the cost of the centrifuge (contribution of 62.2 % in scenario 2) and the electricity requirements. The biopesticide production resulted the highest contribution to investment cost in scenarios 3 and 4 (34 % and 43 % respectively). The use of membranes was also more advantageous to produce biopesticides, although it was 5 times more diluted than using centrifuge. The biostimulant production cost was 65.5 €/m3 with membranes and 342.6 €/m3 by centrifugation and the biopesticide production cost was 353.7 €/m3 in scenario 3 and 2,122.1 €/m3 in scenario 4. Comparing the treatment of 1 ha of land, the cost of the biostimulant produced in the four scenarios was lower than the commercial one (48.1 %, 22.1 %, 45.1 % and 24.2 % respectively). Finally, using membranes for biomass harvesting allowed economically viable plants with lower capacity and longer distance for biostimulant distribution (up to 300 km) than centrifuge (188 km). The algal biomass valorization for agricultural products production is an environmentally and economically feasible process with the adequate capacity of the plant and distribution distance.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Ministerio de Universidades (PDC2021-121861-C22, PID2020-113544RB-I00)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Ministerio de Universidades Doctorate scholarship (PRE2018-083845 and PRE2021-100176)Junta de Castilla y León (UIC 338, CLU 2017-09, CL-EI-2021-07

in vivo toxicity of the ribosome-inactivating lectin ebulin f in elderly mice

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaEbulin f is a ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) present in green fruits of the dwarf elder (Sambucus ebulus L). Since dwarf elder fruits are used for food and as a medicine, we assessed the study of toxicological effects and safety of ebulin f in elderly mice, comparing these results with those reported in young animals and with other RIPs. Female Swiss mice aged 6 and 12 months of age were intraperitoneally injected with a single dose from 1.4 to 4.5 mg/kg ebulin f. Heart, stomach, intestines, lung, kidney, liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenal gland, uterus, ovary and brain were studied. Histology analysis was carried out by staining with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome observed with a light microscope, or apoptosis detection by TUNEL method observed with a confocal laser microscope. Treated animals injected with the lower dose could recover their weights, but after 14 days half of them died. The higher dose caused a progressive loss of body weight leading to death. In the animals of the experimental groups it was found atrophy of Lieberkühn's crypts, pneumonia, nephronal degeneration, myocardial atrophy, centrolobular hepatic necrosis, splenic white pulp necrosis foci and increased rate of apoptosis in the intestines and liver, in which apoptoses were mainly located in the vicinity of the lobular central vein. We conclude that ebulin f affects vital organs in elderly mice.UVa-GIR Inmunotoxinas AntitumoralesUCM-CAM Research group 95024

    Get PDF
Fil: Tolosa, Leticia Eva. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba; Argentina. This article belongs to the Special Issue Friendly Residential Environments for Ageing in Place with Autonomy and Independence.Ageism promotes the exclusion of older people from society by generating a negative image that they also internalize. The aim of this article is to investigate older people's social self-image, through statements broadcast on a national Spanish radio program aimed at this group. A qualitative analysis was conducted for a random sample from the sound archive for the Radio Nacional de España program Juntos Paso a Paso (Together, Step by Step) (2008-2021), using codes based on the pillars and determinants of active ageing and the three dimensions of ageism. Intercoder agreement was calculated. There were significant findings regarding ageism, gendered ageism and ageing in place, with differences according to size of municipal area. The program in question can be considered a viable secondary source for the research aim. Ageism is most commonly manifested through implicit opinions and invisibilization in family and social contexts. Care activities play a notably central role in responses related to gendered ageism. In relation to ageing in place, older people prefer their habitual environment when they have moderate care needs and accept moves to nursing homes when their needs increase
