Biodiesel production from palm oil in a fixed-bed-reactor with calcium methoxide catalyst
En el presente trabajo se analizó el comportamiento del metóxido de calcio como catalizador para la producción de
biodiesel a partir de aceite de palma. Inicialmente se establecieron condiciones de operación en un reactor por lotes,
como temperatura de activación CaO (25°C), temperatura de reacción (60°C) y relación molar metanol/aceite (10).
Se describió el montaje y puesta en marcha de un reactor de lecho fijo y flujo continuo a escala laboratorio; a las
condiciones establecidas se obtuvieron rendimientos a métilesteres del 20% con un tiempo de residencia de 60 min.
También se analizó el uso de cosolventes como el terbutanol y el acetato de etilo para eliminar las limitaciones de
transferencia de masa entre las fases e incrementar los rendimientos a metil ésteres. Se encontró que el uso de etil
acetato como cosolvente incrementó el rendimiento a metil esteres hasta el 31 %. Abstract
In this research, the behavior of calcium methoxide as catalyst for the production of biodiesel from palm oil
in a continuous system was studied. Initially, operating conditions such as CaO activation temperature (25°C),
reaction temperature (60°C) and molar ratio methanol-oil (10)were established for a batch reactor. Then, the
schematic diagram of the experimental setup and its implementation were described for a packed-bed laboratory
scale reactor with continuous flow; for this system, yields of methyl esters of 20% with a residence time of 60 min
were obtained. The use of co-solvent such as tert-Bbutanol and ethyl acetate in the continuous reaction system
was also investigated, aiming to eliminate mass transfer artifacts between the phases and eventually increasing
yields to methyl esters. The use of ethyl acetate as co-solvent increased methyl esters yields up to 31 %

material unsuitable for marketing or materials waste.
The wastes from the ceramic industry (ceramic
waste) may have characteristics suitable for use as
pozzolanic materials, as it is known that the first
materials used as pozzolans were heat-treated clays,

Microbial β-glucosidases from cow rumen metagenome enhance the saccharification of lignocellulose in combination with commercial cellulase cocktail
BACKGROUND: A complete saccharification of plant polymers is the critical step in the efficient production of bio-alcohols. Beta-glucosidases acting in the degradation of intermediate gluco-oligosaccharides produced by cellulases limit the yield of the final product. RESULTS: In the present work, we have identified and then successfully cloned, expressed, purified and characterised 4 highly active beta-glucosidases from fibre-adherent microbial community from the cow rumen. The enzymes were most active at temperatures 45–55°C and pH 4.0-7.0 and exhibited high affinity and activity towards synthetic substrates such as p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (pNPbetaG) and pNP-beta-cellobiose, as well as to natural cello-oligosaccharides ranging from cellobiose to cellopentaose. The apparent capability of the most active beta-glucosidase, herein named LAB25g2, was tested for its ability to improve, at low dosage (31.25 units g(-1) dry biomass, using pNPbetaG as substrate), the hydrolysis of pre-treated corn stover (dry matter content of 20%; 350 g glucan kg(-1) dry biomass) in combination with a beta-glucosidase-deficient commercial Trichoderma reseei cellulase cocktail (5 units g(-1) dry biomass in the basis of pNPbetaG). LAB25g2 increased the final hydrolysis yield by a factor of 20% (44.5 ± 1.7% vs. 34.5 ± 1.5% in control conditions) after 96–120 h as compared to control reactions in its absence or in the presence of other commercial beta-glucosidase preparations. The high stability (half-life higher than 5 days at 50°C and pH 5.2) and 2–38000 fold higher (as compared with reported beta-glucosidases) activity towards cello-oligosaccharides may account for its performance in supplementation assays. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that beta-glucosidases from yet uncultured bacteria from animal digestomes may be of a potential interest for biotechnological processes related to the effective bio-ethanol production in combination with low dosage of commercial cellulases
Stellar and Planetary Characterization of the Ross 128 Exoplanetary System from APOGEE Spectra
The first detailed chemical abundance analysis of the M dwarf (M4.0)
exoplanet-hosting star Ross 128 is presented here, based upon near-infrared
(1.5--1.7 \micron) high-resolution (22,500) spectra from the
SDSS-APOGEE survey. We determined precise atmospheric parameters =3231100K, log=4.960.11 dex and chemical abundances of eight
elements (C, O, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ti, and Fe), finding Ross 128 to have near solar
metallicity ([Fe/H] = +0.030.09 dex). The derived results were obtained
via spectral synthesis (1-D LTE) adopting both MARCS and PHOENIX model
atmospheres; stellar parameters and chemical abundances derived from the
different adopted models do not show significant offsets. Mass-radius modeling
of Ross 128b indicate that it lies below the pure rock composition curve,
suggesting that it contains a mixture of rock and iron, with the relative
amounts of each set by the ratio of Fe/Mg. If Ross 128b formed with a sub-solar
Si/Mg ratio, and assuming the planet's composition matches that of the
host-star, it likely has a larger core size relative to the Earth. The derived
planetary parameters -- insolation flux (S=1.790.26) and
equilibrium temperature (=29410K) -- support previous findings
that Ross 128b is a temperate exoplanet in the inner edge of the habitable

Inequalities in health and health service utilisation among reproductive age women in St. Petersburg, Russia: a cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Russian society has faced dramatic changes in terms of social stratification since the collapse of the Soviet Union. During this time, extensive reforms have taken place in the organisation of health services, including the development of the private sector. Previous studies in Russia have shown a wide gap in mortality between socioeconomic groups. There are just a few studies on health service utilisation in post-Soviet Russia and data on inequality of health service use are limited. The aim of the present study was to analyse health (self-rated health and self-reported chronic diseases) and health care utilisation patterns by socioeconomic status (SES) among reproductive age women in St. Petersburg.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The questionnaire survey was conducted in 2004 (n = 1147), with a response rate of 67%. Education and income were used as dimensions of SES. The association between SES and health and use of health services was assessed by logistic regression, adjusting for age.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As expected low SES was associated with poor self-rated health (education: OR = 1.48; personal income: OR = 1.42: family income: OR = 2.31). University education was associated with use of a wider range of outpatient medical services and increased use of the following examinations: Pap smear (age-adjusted OR = 2.06), gynaecological examinations (age-adjusted OR = 1.62) and mammography among older (more than 40 years) women (age-adjusted OR = 1.98). Personal income had similar correlations, but family income was related only to the use of mammography among older women.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study suggests a considerable inequality in health and utilisation of preventive health service among reproductive age women. Therefore, further studies are needed to identify barriers to health promotion resources.</p
Infarctions in the vascular territory of the posterior cerebral artery: clinical features in 232 patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ischemic stroke caused by infarction in the territory of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) has not been studied as extensively as infarctions in other vascular territories. This single centre, retrospective clinical study was conducted a) to describe salient characteristics of stroke patients with PCA infarction, b) to compare data of these patients with those with ischaemic stroke due to middle cerebral artery (MCA) and anterior cerebral artery (ACA) infarctions, and c) to identify predictors of PCA stroke.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>A total of 232 patients with PCA stroke were included in the "Sagrat Cor Hospital of Barcelona Stroke Registry" during a period of 19 years (1986-2004). Data from stroke patients are entered in the stroke registry following a standardized protocol with 161 items regarding demographics, risk factors, clinical features, laboratory and neuroimaging data, complications and outcome. The characteristics of these 232 patients with PCA stroke were compared with those of the 1355 patients with MCA infarctions and 51 patients with ACA infarctions included in the registry.</p> <p>Infarctions of the PCA accounted for 6.8% of all cases of stroke (<it>n </it>= 3808) and 9.6% of cerebral infarctions (<it>n </it>= 2704). Lacunar infarction was the most frequent stroke subtype (34.5%) followed by atherothrombotic infarction (29.3%) and cardioembolic infarction (21.6%). In-hospital mortality was 3.9% (<it>n </it>= 9). Forty-five patients (19.4%) were symptom-free at hospital discharge. Hemianopia (odds ratio [OR] = 6.43), lacunar stroke subtype (OR = 2.18), symptom-free at discharge (OR = 1.92), limb weakness (OR = 0.10), speech disorders (OR = 0.33) and cardioembolism (OR = 0.65) were independent variables of PCA stroke in comparison with MCA infarction, whereas sensory deficit (OR = 2.36), limb weakness (OR = 0.11) and cardioembolism as stroke mechanism (OR = 0.43) were independent variables associated with PCA stroke in comparison with ACA infarction.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Lacunar stroke is the main subtype of infarction occurring in the PCA territory. Several clinical features are more frequent in stroke patients with PCA infarction than in patients with ischaemic stroke due to infarction in the MCA and ACA territories. In-hospital mortality in patients with PCA territory is low.</p
