Reduction of the field-dependent microwave surface resistance in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 with sub-micrometric BaZrO_3 inclusions as a function of BaZrO_3 concentration
In order to study the vortex pinning determined by artificially introduced
pinning centers in the small-vortex displacement regime, we measured the
microwave surface impedance at 47.7 GHz in the mixed state of
YBaCuO thin films, where sub-micrometric BaZrO
particles have been incorporated. As a function of the BaZrO content, we
observe that the absolute losses slightly decrease up to a BaZrO content of
5%, and then increase. We found that the magnetic-field-induced losses behave
differently, in that they are not monotonic with increasing BaZrO
concentration: at small concentration (2.5%) the field-induced losses increase,
but large reduction of the losses themselves, by factors up to 3, is observed
upon further increasing the BaZrO concentration in the target up to 7%.
Using measurements of both surface resistance and surface reactance we estimate
vortex pinning-related parameters. We find that BaZrO inclusions introduce
deep and steep pinning wells. In particular, the minimum height of the energy
barrier for single vortices is raised. At larger BaZrO content (5% and 7%)
the phenomenon is at its maximum, but it is unclear whether it shows a
saturation or not, thus leaving room for further improvements.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Strong reduction of field-dependent microwave surface resistance in YBaCuO with sub-micrometric BaZrO inclusions
We observe a strong reduction of the field induced thin film surface
resistance measured at high microwave frequency (47.7 GHz) in
YBaCuO thin films grown on SrTiO substrates, as a
consequence of the introduction of sub-micrometric BaZrO particles. The
field increase of the surface resistance is smaller by a factor of 3 in
the film with BaZrO inclusions, while the zero-field properties are not
much affected. Combining surface resistance and surface reactance data we
conclude (a) that BaZrO inclusions determine very deep and steep pinning

New Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatments for ‘Old’ Patients : Results of a Systematic Review
Introduction: In the last 20 years, biologic and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have become available for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and a treat-to-target strategy has been introduced. We hypothesise that these advances should have resulted in changes to the characteristics of patients with RA participating in clinical trials of the newest therapies. This study determined whether the baseline characteristics of patients with RA enrolled in clinical trials have changed in the past decade versus patients participating in earlier RA studies. Methods: This secondary analysis was based on randomised controlled trials (RCTs) identified in a systematic literature review. Baseline characteristics of patients with RA with inadequate response to conventional synthetic DMARDs were compared between RCTs published in 1999\u20132009 and those published in 2010\u20132017 using random-effects meta-analyses. Results: Forty RCTs were analysed: 22 from 1999\u20132009 and 18 from 2010\u20132017. No significant difference between the two timeframes and no obvious trend over time were observed for age, gender, disease duration, rheumatoid factor status, tender and swollen joint counts, physician and patient global assessments of disease activity, and pain scores. Variability between RCTs was high. Similar results were observed for Disease Activity Scores and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index scores, but with low variability between RCTs. Conclusion: The baseline characteristics of patients with RA participating in RCTs do not appear to have changed in the last decade despite the availability of new treatments and a different treatment approach. Further research should determine the impact of baseline patient characteristics on patients\u2019 response to RA treatments
Strong Reduction of the Field-Dependent Microwave Surface Resistance in YBCO with BaZrO_3 Inclusions
We present measurements of the magnetic field dependent microwave surface
resistance in laser-ablated YBaCuO films on SrTiO
substrates. BaZrO crystallites were included in the films using composite
targets containing BaZrO inclusions with mean grain size smaller than 1
m. X-ray diffraction showed single epitaxial relationship between
BaZrO and YBaCuO. The effective surface resistance was
measured at 47.7 GHz for 6090 K and 00.8 T. The magnetic
field had a very different effect on pristine YBaCuO and
YBaCuO/BaZrO, while for 0 only a reduction of
in the YBaCuO/BaZrO film was observed,
consistent with dc measurements. At low enough , in moderate fields
YBaCuO/BaZrO exhibited an intrinsic thin film
resistance lower than the pure film. The results clearly indicate that
BaZrO inclusions determine a strong reduction of the field-dependent
surface resistance. From the analysis of the data in the framework of simple
models for the microwave surface impedance in the mixed state we argue that

Effect of nanosize BaZrO3 inclusions on vortex parameters in YBaCuO
We report on the field dependence of the microwave complex resistivity data
in YBaCuO/BaZrO films grown by PLD at various BaZrO
content. The data, analyzed within a recently developed general framework for
the mixed-state microwave response of superconductors, yield the field
dependence of the fluxon parameters such as the vortex viscosity and the
pinning constant. We find that pinning undergoes a change of regime when the
BaZrO content in the target increases from 2.5 mol.% to 5 mol.%.
Simultaneously, the vortex viscosity becomes an increasing function of the
applied magnetic field. We propose a scenario in which flux lines are pinned as
bundles, and a crossover from dilute point pins to dense c-axis correlated
defects takes place between 2.5 and 5 mol.% in the BZO concentration. Our data
are inconsistent with vortices occupying mainly the BaZrO sites at low
fields, and suggest instead that vortices occupy both BaZrO sites and
interstitials in the YBaCuO matrix, even at low fields.Comment: Presented at EUCAS 2009, to be published in J. Phys.:Conf. Serie
Angular dependence of the high-frequency vortex response in YBaCuO thin film with self-assembled BaZrO nanorods
We present a microwave study of the angular dependence of the flux-flow
resistivity and of the pinning constant in YBCO thin films
containing BZO nanorods. We find that BZO nanorods are very efficient pinning
centers, even in tilted fields. We find that is a scaling function
of a reduced field . We extend a model for the anisotropic motion
of vortices in uniaxially anisotropic superconductor, able to describe the
experimental on the basis of only the intrinsic anisotropy of YBCO.
The pinning constant , by contrast, exhibits different field dependences
in different angular ranges, consistent with pinning by BZO at angles as large
as 60, and with pinning along the planes as originating from
the same mechanism as in pure YBCO with the field along the c axis.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Mongersen, an oral SMAD7 antisense oligonucleotide, and crohn's disease
Background Crohn's disease-related inflammation is characterized by reduced activity of the immunosuppressive cytokine transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) due to high levels of SMAD7, an inhibitor of TGF-β1 signaling. Preclinical studies and a phase 1 study have shown that an oral SMAD7 antisense oligonucleotide, mongersen, targets ileal and colonic SMAD7. Methods In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial, we evaluated the efficacy of mongersen for the treatment of persons with active Crohn's disease. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 10, 40, or 160 mg of mongersen or placebo per day for 2 weeks. The primary outcomes were clinical remission at day 15, defined as a Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) score of less than 150, with maintenance of remission for at least 2 weeks, and the safety of mongersen treatment. A secondary outcome was clinical response (defined as a reduction of 100 points or more in the CDAI score) at day 28. Results The proportions of patients who reached the primary end point were 55% and 65% for the 40-mg and 160-mg mongersen groups, respectively, as compared with 10% for the placebo group (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in the percentage of participants reaching clinical remission between the 10-mg group (12%) and the placebo group. The rate of clinical response was significantly greater among patients receiving 10 mg (37%), 40 mg (58%), or 160 mg (72%) of mongersen than among those receiving placebo (17%) (P = 0.04, P<0.001, and P<0.001, respectively). Most adverse events were related to complications and symptoms of Crohn's disease. Conclusions We found that study participants with Crohn's disease who received mongersen had significantly higher rates of remission and clinical response than those who received placebo
Safety of treatments for inflammatory bowel disease: Clinical practice guidelines of the Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IG-IBD)
Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic conditions of unknown etiology, showing a growing incidence and prevalence in several countries, including Italy. Although the etiology of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis is unknown, due to the current knowledge regarding their pathogenesis, effective treatment strategies have been developed. Several guidelines are available regarding the efficacy and safety of available drug treatments for inflammatory bowel diseases. Nevertheless, national guidelines provide additional information adapted to local feasibility, costs and legal issues related to the use of the same drugs. These observations prompted the Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IG-IBD) to establish Italian guidelines on the safety of currently available treatments for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These guidelines discuss the use of aminosalicylates, systemic and low bioavailability corticosteroids, antibiotics (metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, rifaximin), thiopurines, methotrexate, cyclosporine A, TNFα antagonists, vedolizumab, and combination therapies. These guidelines are based on current knowledge derived from evidence-based medicine coupled with clinical experience of a national working group
