The small community solar thermal power experiment. Parabolic dish technology for industrial process heat application
Aspects of incorporating a thermal energy transport system (ETS) into a field of parabolic dish collectors for industrial process heat (IPH) applications were investigated. Specific objectives are to: (1) verify the mathematical optimization of pipe diameters and insulation thicknesses calculated by a computer code; (2) verify the cost model for pipe network costs using conventional pipe network construction; (3) develop a design and the associated production costs for incorporating risers and downcomers on a low cost concentrator (LCC); (4) investigate the cost reduction of using unconventional pipe construction technology. The pipe network design and costs for a particular IPH application, specifically solar thermally enhanced oil recovery (STEOR) are analyzed. The application involves the hybrid operation of a solar powered steam generator in conjunction with a steam generator using fossil fuels to generate STEOR steam for wells. It is concluded that the STEOR application provides a baseline pipe network geometry used for optimization studies of pipe diameter and insulation thickness, and for development of comparative cost data, and operating parameters for the design of riser/downcomer modifications to the low cost concentrator
Does the proton-to-electron mass ratio vary in the course of cosmological evolution?
The possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio was
estimated by measuring the H_2 wavelengths in the high-resolution spectrum of
the quasar Q~0347-382. Our analysis yielded an estimate for the possible
deviation of \mu value in the past, 10 Gyr ago: for the unweighted value
; for the weighted value Since the significance of the both
results does not exceed 3, further observations are needed to increase
the statistical significance. In any case, this result may be considered as the
most stringent estimate on an upper limit of a possible variation of \mu (95%
C.L.): This value serves as an
effective tool for selection of models determining a relation between possible
cosmological deviations of the fine-structure constant \alpha and the

Complexity-entropy analysis at different levels of organization in written language
Written language is complex. A written text can be considered an attempt to
convey a meaningful message which ends up being constrained by language rules,
context dependence and highly redundant in its use of resources. Despite all
these constraints, unpredictability is an essential element of natural
language. Here we present the use of entropic measures to assert the balance
between predictability and surprise in written text. In short, it is possible
to measure innovation and context preservation in a document. It is shown that
this can also be done at the different levels of organization of a text. The
type of analysis presented is reasonably general, and can also be used to
analyze the same balance in other complex messages such as DNA, where a
hierarchy of organizational levels are known to exist
Time-Series Ensemble Photometry and the Search for Variable Stars in the Open Cluster M11
This work presents the first large-scale photometric variability survey of
the intermediate age (~200 Myr) open cluster M11. Thirteen nights of data over
two observing seasons were analyzed (using crowded field and ensemble
photometry techniques) to obtain high relative precision photometry. In this
study we focus on the detection of candidate member variable stars for
follow-up studies. A total of 39 variable stars were detected and can be
categorized as follows: 1 irregular (probably pulsating) variable, 6 delta
Scuti variables, 14 detached eclipsing binary systems, 17 W UMa variables, and
1 unidentified/candidate variable. While previous proper motion studies allow
for cluster membership determination for the brightest stars, we find that
membership determination is significantly hampered below V=15,R=15.5 by the
large population of field stars overlapping the cluster MS. Of the brightest
detected variables that have a high likelihood of cluster membership, we find
five systems where further work could help constrain theoretical stellar

Magnetically suspended flywheel system study
A program to study the application of a graphite/epoxy, magnetically suspended, pierced disk flywheel for the combined function of spacecraft attitude control and energy storage (ACES) is described. Past achievements of the program include design and analysis computer codes for the flywheel rotor, a magnetically suspended flywheel model, and graphite/epoxy rotor rings that were successfully prestressed via interference assembly. All hardware successfully demonstrated operation of the necessary subsystems which form a complete ACES design. Areas of future work include additional rotor design research, system definition and control strategies, prototype development, and design/construction of a UM/GSFC spin test facility. The results of applying design and analysis computer codes to a magnetically suspended interference assembled rotor show specific energy densities of 42 Wh/lb (92.4 Wh/kg) are obtained for a 1.6 kWh system
