Integration brings convergence? The role of public and human capital

This work decompose labor-productivity grotwh and convergence in EU into components attributable to technological change (shifts in the European production frontier), technological catch-up (movements toward or away from the frontier) and factor accumulation (movement toward or away from the frontier). This work extends previous researchs considering public capital and human capitas as additional productive inputs and analysing its separate constribution to convergence as components of factor accumulation. In the case of human capital, we also test its rate effect as determinant factor of technical change. With this purpose we applied the Malmquist index of total factor productivity to an European data base to provide evidence for the 15 EU State Members. The results show that growth is primarily driven by factor accumulation which contribution is fundamental for lagging countries. We do not find evidence of any significant convergence over the whole period studied related to integration with factor accumulation and efficiency change as important factors of convergence while technical change (encouraged by greater human capital) has worked against it. El índice de Masa corporal y su asociación con la actividad física

El estilo de vida de los estudiantes de licenciatura en enfermería se modifica por las carga horaria, el cual tiene un impacto en el índice de masa corporal.Uno de los retos más importantes de Salud Pública son los problemas de sobrepeso y obesidad de la población, por los riesgos para la salud que esto implica. La enfermera no solo tiene un compromiso social a través de la educación para la salud, sino también con ella misma, de ahí la importancia de determinar el Índice de Masa Corporal y su asociación con actividad física desde su formación. Para tal efecto, se realizó este estudio cuantitativo transversal, muestra no probabilística con 111 participantes. Los resultados muestran que 52.3% sí realiza actividad física; el 11.7% presentan sobrepeso, y el 2.7% obesidad tipo I. Se encontró asociación entre el Índice de Masa Corporal con antecedentes heredofamiliares (Chi2= 8.689, p≤ .003). El porcentaje de sobrepeso y obesidad en los alumnos de enfermería participantes en el estudio se encuentra por debajo de la media nacional, lo cual significa una fortaleza que debe vigilarse y mantenerse toda la vida.Ningun

Closing the cycle? Potential and limitations of Water and Sanitation Safety Plans (WSSP) for Latin American metropolitan areas

Water and sanitation management faces major challenges due to the rapid urban growth of metropolitan areas and the resulting pressure on water resources. Metropolitan areas often combine formal and informal water and sanitation services and regularly face shortages, leakages, and other situations involving risk to users and the environment. This work presents an integrated approach for the development and implementation of a Water and Sanitation Safety Plan (WSSP) for metropolitan areas, especially in developing countries. The plan allows for the assessment of all the risks associated with the components of the urban water cycle by means of a semi-quantitative approach. In the case study described, the overall risk estimated was 37.2% (44.0 and 30.3% for the drinking water supply and sanitation sub-systems, respectively). Highest risk values were obtained for components of water treatment (53.0%) and wastewater treatment (51.7%). Our assessment took into account both formal and informal sanitation components of the water and wastewater management cycle and included a multi-institutional analysis of the entire system. Results obtained may contribute to establishing new policies and guidelines for the protection of public health and the local environment in our case study and other areas of the region with similar contexts and comparable institutional settings.Fil: Clavijo Lara, Araceli Maria. 3D reconstruction of magnetization from dichroic soft X-ray transmission tomography

The development of magnetic nanostructures for applications in spintronics requires methods capable of visualizing their magnetization. Soft X‐ray magnetic imaging combined with circular magnetic dichroism allows nanostructures up to 100–300 nm in thickness to be probed with resolutions of 20–40 nm. Here a new iterative tomographic reconstruction method to extract the three‐dimensional magnetization configuration from tomographic projections is presented. The vector field is reconstructed by using a modified algebraic reconstruction approach based on solving a set of linear equations in an iterative manner. The application of this method is illustrated with two examples (magnetic nano‐disc and micro‐square heterostructure) along with comparison of error in reconstructions, and convergence of the algorithm

El uso de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación en el desarrollo académico de los alumnos universitarios: caso Facultad de Enfermería y Obstetricia

Los dispositivos, que brindan acceso a Internet, facilitan la comunicación y la información, convertidas en complementos indispensables en la vida de los alumnos, donde su uso contribuye con el aprendizaje y la educación. Se hizo un estudio cuantitativo, no experimental, transversal. Instrumento dividido en tres categorías: actitudes, uso y dominio de las tecnologías. La muestra fue de 299 estudiantes. 56% están completamente de acuerdo en que son una herramienta efectiva para el aprendizaje. 50% de acuerdo en que mejorarán la calidad educativa en clase. Un 41% de acuerdo en que son un complemento positivo para los libros, y un 42% a las bases de datos de bibliotecas virtuales y obtener información profesional. 62%, que optimizan el proceso de aprendizaje, y 39% plantean usarlas en lo académico. Oregano essential oil-pectin edible films as anti-quorum sensing and food antimicrobial agents

Edible films can be used as carriers for antimicrobial compounds to assure food safety andquality; in addition, pathogenesis of food bacteria is related to a cell to cell communicationmechanism calledquorum sensing(QS). Oregano essential oil (OEO) has proved to beuseful as food antimicrobial; however, its foodapplications can be compromised by thevolatile character of its active constituents.Therefore, formulation of edible films containingOEO can be an alternative to improve its food usages. QS inhibitory activity of OEO andpectin-OEO films was evaluated usingChromobacterium violaceumas bacterial model.Additionally, antibacterial activity was tested againstEscherichia coliO157:H7,SalmonellaCholeraesuis,Staphylococcus aureus,andListeria monocytogenes. OEO was effective toinhibit bacterial growth at MIC of 0.24 mg/mL for all tested bacteria and MBC of 0.24,0.24, 0.48, and 0.24 mg/mL againstE. coliO157:H7,S.Choleraesuis,S. aureus, andL.monocytogenes, respectively. Pectin-films incorporated with 36.1 and 25.9 mg/mL of OEOshowed inhibition diameters of 16.3 and 15.2 mm forE. coliO157:H7; 18.1 and 24.2 mm forS.Choleraesuis; 20.8 and 20.3 mm forS. aureus; 21.3 and 19.3 mm forL. monocytogenes,respectively. Pectin-OEO film (15.7 mg/mL) was effective againstE. coliO157:H7 (9.3 mm),S. aureus(9.7 mm), andL. monocytogenes(9.2 mm), but not forS.Choleraesuis. Allconcentrations of OEO (0.0156, 0.0312, 0.0625 and 0.125 mg/mL) and pectin-OEO films(15.7, 25.9 and 36.1 mg/mL) showed a significant anti-QS activity expressed as inhibition ofviolacein production byC. violaceum.
