An Essay about a Philosophical Attitude in Management and Organization Studies Based on Parrhesia
Management and organization studies (MOS) scholarship is at a crossroads. The grand challenges (such as the climate emergency) humankind must face today require an improved contribution from all knowledge fields. The number of academics who criticize the lack of influence and social impact of MOS has recently grown. The scientific field structure of MOS is based on its members’ accumulation of symbolic capital. This structure hinders speaking truth to the elite dominating neoliberal society. Our literature review suggested that a deeper interaction between MOS and philosophy could aid in improving the social impact of MOS. Specifically, an attitude by MOS scholars based on parrhesia (παρρησíα, to speak truth to power) could revitalize the field through heterodox approaches and, consequently, allow them to utter sound criticisms of the capitalist system. Parrhesia would lead MOS scholars towards a convergence of ethics and politics. We investigate whether daring to speak inconvenient truths to the powerful (some peers in the field and some individuals and corporations in society) can be a straightforward tool for revitalizing MOS. Boosting a candid philosophy-MOS interaction requires the fulfilment of three objectives: practical dialogue between these fields, reconsideration of the fields’ structures based on symbolic capital, and a post-disciplinary approach to philosophy. That fulfilment implies the delimitation of the MOS-philosophy interaction, a respectful mutual framework, mutual curiosity, and moving from prescriptive theoretical reflection towards more socially useful MOS. Ethical betterment through parrhesia could be the key to surpassing MOS stagnatio
New business models in the creative economy: emotions and social networks
Individual creativity, skills, and talent shape the creative economy. Its social and economic development potential derives from intellectual property benefits. It reveals a break in the traditional value chain and the emergence of new business models. Several case studies show how social network markets are essential for those models. These markets articulate emotions and products throughout stories that draw together different user’s communities
The relationship between responsible leadership (RL), identified from achievement expectations, and the importance
attached to corporate social responsibility (CSR) was analyzed. In a survey of 1,833 business management undergraduates
in six Ibero-American countries, factor analysis identified three approaches to stakeholder relations, behaviors, and
professional aspirations: a relational style associated with the intention to collaborate with others; a pragmatic style
geared to attaining personal and organizational objectives; and an individualist style informed by a drive for personal
achievement. Regression analyses confirmed the relationship between relational and pragmatic styles and CSR geared to
stakeholder well-being, protection of social and natural environments, and ethical management. Both were associated
with regard to the responsibilities that ensure business survival (such as meeting customer needs), while the individualist
style was aligned with hostility toward those dimensions of CSR. These findings suggest that the relational and pragmatic
Quality and quality models to measure quality and assurance in public hospitals: Is it posible to regulate a construct?
desarrollos legislativos. Los diversos
enfoques y los estándares internacionales
obligan a preguntarnos ¿Es posible definir,
los marcos normativosThis article is a proposal for reflection on the concept
of quality in health in the international context and
its attempts to standardize a construct and define a
model, evidencing that quality is not adequately
incorporated into legislative developments.
The different approaches and international standards
force the following question: Is it possible to
define, formalize and generate a single regulatory
framework? The objective of the bibliographic review
is to characterize a construct of quality in health and
to demonstrate the health advances in the world to
account for some normative models that guide health
policies in different countries. This is complemented
by more than 10 hospital pre-investment studies
prepared in Chile (between 2000 and 2010). It is
concluded that quality is a multivariate concept in
constant evolution and mobility, that its measurement
depends on the area of work and who measures it,
and that the analyzes of the quality models reflect that
there is no consensus in this regard and, therefore,
care must be taken when approaching the regulatory
framework
Reflections on the diffusion of management and organization research in the context of open science in Europe
Management and organization research (MOR) faces a crisis related to its social impact and limited response to
grand societal challenges. It is also affected by the ongoing transformations in all scientific fields related to the
creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge shaping known as “open science” (OS). According to the European
Commission, OS must increase the links between the scientific fields and society to make science a socioeconomic
engine to overcome these challenges. Therefore, contacting the public through social networks extends the social
impact of MOR and facilitates new scientific evaluation metrics. Through an exploratory topic model applied to
the Twitter activity of six European highly cited researchers (HCRs) in “economics and business”, we show that a
large part of the Twitter activity of these HCRs refers to not only the content of their scientific work but also the
social echo that has increased symbolic capital for HCRsThis work was supported by the project Diagnosis of OS in Spanishe
universities and instruments for its transformation and improvement (DOSSUET, PID 2019-104052RB-C21), financed by the Spanish State Program for Oriented R + D + i to the Challenges of the Societ
How to support mobility students to gain soft-competences: Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes
Students participating in mobility experiences have a great learning opportunity, but in many cases they hardly realise about the soft-competences they developed during mobility. In this context, the supporting role of universities is key for students to make the most of their mobility and be able to communicate their learning outcomes. This study analyses the support services that students receive for the development and acknolwledgement of mobility soft comptencies (related with the three dimensiones: knowledge, skills and attitudes or KSAs) in order to define the university strategy in this field. Results show two types of support for outgoing and incoming students: (i) passive initiatives based on delivering relevant information for the mobility period to students; and (ii) active initiatives based on training activities and activities for student integration in the host university/city/culture. No support initiatives on mobility related KSAs for returned students or academic staff have been identified.
