Knowledge of body mass index and its correlates among the patient at a tertiary care hospital

Background: In spite of the numerous chronic diseases that have been linked to obesity, studies focusing on awareness regarding Body mass index (BMI) and its correlates to prevent and control obesity are lacking in the literature, especially in developing countries such as India, where obesity is culturally accepted and nurtured in the society. Methods: A cross-sectional prospective survey was done between November 2018 and November 2019 in a tertiary care research institute after approval from institutional ethics committee. A pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect data in excel sheet (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA) and analysed using SPSS.Results: total 264 (80.3% urban and 19.7% rural background) patients with mean age of 42 years with different educational level participated in the study. 1.1% patients were underweight, 2.7% mean BMI of studied population was 34.76. BMI distribution curve was bilaterally symmetrical. No one in the study population was well aware of about the BMI and related comorbidities. 98.5% patients confirmed that their doctor had never discussed their BMI with them. Conclusion: There is a significant gap of knowledge among patients regarding obesity and BMI, and physicians also have to take initiatives to discuss about this for primary control of the disease (obesity) and related comorbidities

Abstract Background Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are a major public health problem, requiring concerted efforts both for their prevention and a reduction of their consequences. The present study was designed to assess the existing process of pre-hospital trauma care administered to road accident victims in a fast urbanizing city of Jodhpur, Rajasthan Methods A cross-sectional study was designed from 1st November 2018 to 30th June 2019. All cases who were admitted to tertiary level trauma care facility in the study period were reviewed and were analyzed for type of injuries suffered, prehospital care services availed and the time duration that elapsed before patient arrived at tertiary health facility. Geographic information system was used to identify clustering of accident hot spots in the Jodhpur district. Results A total of 137 patients or their caregivers were interviewed during the study period. A large proportion of patients 57(41.6%) were unconscious in post-crash phase. Private taxis contributed to maximum patient transfer (75.9%) and only 12.4% were transported through ambulance. Almost three fourth (78.1%) of patients received some form of pre-hospital care within 30 minutes of accident. About one third patients (35.7%) reached the trauma facility directly after the accident while majority (64.9%) were referred from other health facilities Conclusions Pre-hospital trauma care for road traffic accident victims is available in golden hour for majority of victims in Jodhpur district. Victims from rural area and tourists form a sizeable proportion of accident victims brought to trauma care facility. The primary health care facilities play a pivotal role in managing victims as first point of care. Future research is thus warranted to explicitly examine the role of health professionals at primary health care facilities in administering pre-hospital trauma care. Key messages The primary health care facilities play a pivotal role in managing victims as first point of care. In areas with evolving trauma systems, pre-hospital trauma care strengthening requires capacity building of all level of health professionals. </jats:sec

(P2-73) Ocular Nerve Sheath Diameter for Evaluation of Raised Intracranial Pressure in Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department - A Prospective, Observational Study

BackgroundUltrasonography of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) may be useful in detecting raised intracranial pressure (ICP) in head injury (HI). There is limited data from India.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of measuring ONSD for diagnosis of raised intracranial pressure in HI victims in the emergency department.MethodsFifty-two HI patients presenting between February to August 2009 were included, A CT head scan was performed and simultaneous ocular ultrasound was done by an emergency physician who had underwent goal-directed training in ophthalmic sonography by a linear probe of 10 MHz. An ONSD greater than > 5 mm for patients > 15 years of age, 4.5 mm for 1–15 years of age, and 4 mm for infants were considered abnormal. The two modalities of diagnosis were compared.ResultsThe median age was 30 years (Range = 0.25–72 years). A total of 90.4% were male and 9.6% were female. A total of 71.2% had severe HI, 19.2% had moderate HI, and 9.6% had mild HI. A raised ICP based on CT findings was present in 42 (80.8%) patients. Mean optic nerve diameter in patients with raised ICP was 5.11 + 1.56 mm compared to 5.04 + 1.6 mm in patients with no features of raised ICP. Sensitivity and specificity of ONSD as a screening test for detection of raised intracranial pressure were 57.1% and 40%, respectively with a positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 80% and 18.1%, respectively.ConclusionsThe evaluation of the ONSD diameter is a simple and non-invasive potential tool in initial assessment of raised intracranial pressure.</jats:sec
