The Evolution of Income Composition Inequality in Italy, 1989–2016
We study the evolution of inequality in income composition in terms of capital and labor income in Italy between 1989 and 2016. We document a rise in the share of capital income accruing to the bottom of the distribution, while the top of the distribution increases its share of labor income. This implies a falling degree of income composition inequality in the period considered and a weaker relationship between the functional and personal distribution of income in Italy. This result is robust to various specifications of self-employment income; nonetheless, it hinges crucially on the treatment of rental incomes. While the dynamics of imputed rents has brought about a more equitable distribution of capital incomes across the income distribution, that of actual rents has led to higher concentration of capital incomes at the top in the decade preceding the outbreak of the financial crisis. Finally, we conceptualize a rule of thumb for policy makers seeking to reduce income inequality in the long run
The wage curve across the wealth distribution
This paper studies the relationship between wages and the unemployment rate across the wealth distribution. Using microdata from Norway covering the entire population of residents between 2000 and 2015, we introduce four novel findings on this relationship. First, the share of unemployed individuals belonging to the bottom decile of the gross wealth distribution is tenfold larger than that belonging to the top decile (34% and 3.2%, respectively). Second, the share of unemployed individuals belonging to the bottom decile of the gross wealth distribution moves in the opposite manner to that of the top decile. Third, the negative slope of the wage curve is confirmed. Fourth, the wage-to-unemployment ratio increases monotonically with gross wealth

Perceptions of Inequality and Redistribution: A Note

We build on the novel stylized facts provided by the recent empirical and experimental literature on perceptions of income inequality. In brief, the emerging consensus is that agents incorrectly estimate the shape of the income distribution because of limited information. Agents with income above the mean believe they are poorer than they actually are, and agents with income below the mean believe themselves to be richer. We revisit the standard framework on the political economy of redistribution and extend it in two ways. First, we assume a more general two-sided inequality aversion. Second, we incorporate perceptions of income inequality in the model. We show analytically that the equilibrium redistribution level is crucially determined by the interplay between the information treatment correcting the bias in perceptions of inequality and fairness considerations specified by the degree of inequality aversion. By doing this, we add (biased) perceptions of inequality to the list of potential factors explaining why, notwithstanding high levels of inequality, in many countries, an increase in the desire for redistribution has not been observed

Trichlorfon effects on mouse oocytes following in vivo exposure

MUTATION RESEARCH-GENETIC TOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MUTAGENESIS. 2008;651(1-2):125-130.Trichlorfon (TCF) is a widely used pesticide, which according to some epidemiological and experimental data, is suspected of being aneugenic in human and mouse cells. In particular, in vitro studies in mouse oocytes showed the induction of aneuploidy and polyploidy at the first meiotic division and of severe morphological alterations of the second meiotic spindle. We have tested the hypothesis that an acute treatment of mice with TCF might similarly affect chromosome segregation in maturing oocytes. Superovulated MF-1 mice were intraperitoneally injected with 400 mg/kg TCF or orally administered with 600 mg/kg TCF either at the time of or 4 h after human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) injection. Oocytes were harvested 17 h after HCG and metaphase II chromosomes were cytogenetically analyzed. No significant increase of aneuploid or polyploid cells was detected at any treatment condition. A significant (p < 0.001) decrease of metaphases showing premature chromatid separation or premature anaphase II in all TCF-treated groups with respect to controls suggested that TCF treatment may have delayed the first meiotic division. To evaluate possible effects of the pesticide upon the second meiotic division, a group of females orally treated with 600 mg/kg TCF at resumption of meiosis was mated with untreated males and zygotes were collected for cytogenetic analysis. No evidence of aneuploidy induction was obtained, but the frequency of polyploid zygotes was increased fivefold over the control level (p < 0.01). Such polyploid embryos might have arisen from fertilization of oocytes that were either meiotically delayed and still in metaphase I at fertilization or progressed through anaphase II without cytokinesis. These findings show that in vivo studies on aneuploidy induction in oocytes may yield results different from those obtained by in vitro experiments and that both kinds of data may be necessary for risk assessment of environmentally relevant exposures. X-Ray Induced DNA Damage and Repair in Germ Cells of PARP1−/− Male Mice
Poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase-1 (PARP1) is a nuclear protein implicated in DNA repair, recombination, replication, and chromatin remodeling. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible differences between PARP1−/− and wild-type mice regarding induction and repair of DNA lesions in irradiated male germ cells. Comet assay was applied to detect DNA damage in testicular cells immediately, and two hours after 4 Gy X-ray irradiation. A similar level of spontaneous and radiation-induced DNA damage was observed in PARP1−/− and wild-type mice. Conversely, two hours after irradiation, a significant level of residual damage was observed in PARP1−/− cells only. This finding was particularly evident in round spermatids. To evaluate if PARP1 had also a role in the dynamics of H2AX phosphorylation in round spermatids, in which γ-H2AX foci had been shown to persist after completion of DNA repair, we carried out a parallel analysis of γ-H2AX foci at 0.5, 2, and 48 h after irradiation in wild-type and PARP1−/− mice. No evidence was obtained of an effect of PARP1 depletion on H2AX phosphorylation induction and removal. Our results suggest that, in round spermatids, under the tested experimental conditions, PARP1 has a role in radiation-induced DNA damage repair rather than in long-term chromatin modifications signaled by phosphorylated H2AX
