Evaluating Descent and Ascent Trajectories Near Non-Spherical Bodies
Spacecraft landing on small bodies pass through regions where conventional gravitation formulations using exterior spherical harmonics are inaccurate. An investigation shows that a formulation using interior solid spherical harmonics might be satisfactory. Interior spherical harmonic expansions are usable inside an imaginary, empty sphere. For this application, such a sphere could be positioned in empty space above the intended landing site and rotating with the body. When the spacecraft is inside this sphere, the interior harmonic expansion would be used instead of the conventional, exterior harmonic expansion. Coefficients can be determined by a least-squares fit to gravitation measurements synthesized from conventional formulations. Due to their unfamiliarity, recurrences for interior, as well as exterior, expansions are derived. Hotine's technique for partial derivatives of exterior spherical harmonics is extended to interior harmonics
Scientific Highlights from Observations of Active Galactic Nuclei with the MAGIC Telescope
Since 2004, the MAGIC gamma-ray telescope has newly discovered 6 TeV blazars.
The total set of 13 MAGIC-detected active galactic nuclei includes well-studied
objects at other wavelengths like Markarian 501 and the giant radio galaxy M87,
but also the distant the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 279, and the newly
discovered TeV gamma-ray emitter S5 0716+71. In addition, also long-term and
multi-wavelength studies on well-known TeV blazars and systematic searches for
new TeV blazars have been carried out. Here we report selected highlights from
recent MAGIC observations of extragalactic TeV gamma-ray sources, emphasizing

Improved tunneling magnetoresistance at low temperature in manganite junctions grown by molecular beam epitaxy
We report resistance versus magnetic field measurements for a
La0.65Sr0.35MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.65Sr0.35MnO3 tunnel junction grown by
molecular-beam epitaxy, that show a large field window of extremely high
tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) at low temperature. Scanning the in-plane
applied field orientation through 360^/circ, the TMR shows 4-fold symmetry,
i.e. biaxial anisotropy, aligned with the crystalline axes but not the junction
geometrical long axis. The TMR reaches ~ 1900% at 4K, corresponding to an
interfacial spin polarization of > 95% assuming identical interfaces. These
results show that uniaxial anisotropy is not necessary for large TMR, and lay
the groundwork for future improvements in TMR in manganite junctions.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures; accepted in Applied Physics Letter

Ulnar Neuropathy Among Active Workers Based Upon Hand Diagram Ratings
BackgroundLimited studies have estimated the prevalence of ulnar neuropathy (UN) in the workplace. Hand diagrams have been demonstrated to have a good sensitivity and specificity when attempting to identify patients with UN.ObjectiveTo determine the prevalence and associated risk factors for UN among active workers based on results of a hand diagram, and to determine the reliability of hand diagram scoring.DesignCross‐sectional study.SettingSeven different industrial and clerical work sites.MethodsA total of 501 active workers were screened. Subjects completed a hand diagram and the Job Content Questionnaire, and had ergonomic assessment of their job. Each hand diagram was scored independently by 2 raters.Main Outcome MeasuresRating of the hand diagram for UN.ResultsInterrater reliability of scoring the hand diagram for UN was very high. The estimated prevalence of UN was 3.6%. Suspected UN was associated with positioning of the elbow but not by contact stress at the elbow or force at the hand. Smokers had a lower prevalence, but smokers with suspected UN had higher‐pack year histories. Workers with suspected UN had a greater sense of job insecurity and lower job satisfaction rating.ConclusionsHand diagram rating has a high interrater reliability. Use of hand diagrams in screening for ulnar neuropathy: Comparison with electrodiagnostic studies
Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine whether a hand diagram could be used to predict ulnar mononeuropathy. Methods: This was a prospective study of 117 consecutive patients referred for hand symptoms. Each subject filled out a hand diagram of symptoms and had median and ulnar sensory and motor nerve conduction studies, including ulnar conduction across the elbow. Results: The best model for predicting an ulnar mononeuropathy included hand diagram scores of definite or possible. The model had a sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 93% with an ROC area of 0.90. Conclusions: The ulnar hand diagram scoring system can be useful as a screening tool in the electrodiagnostic laboratory or for epidemiologic studies. Bose-Einstein condensation of chromium
We report on the generation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a gas of
chromium atoms, which will make studies of the effects of anisotropic
long-range interactions in degenerate quantum gases possible. The preparation
of the chromium condensate requires novel cooling strategies that are adapted
to its special electronic and magnetic properties. The final step to reach
quantum degeneracy is forced evaporative cooling of 52Cr atoms within a crossed
optical dipole trap. At a critical temperature of T~700nK, we observe
Bose-Einstein condensation by the appearance of a two-component velocity
distribution. Released from an anisotropic trap, the condensate expands with an
inversion of the aspect ratio. We observe critical behavior of the condensate
fraction as a function of temperature and more than 50,000 condensed 52Cr
