    The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell was devised for high voltage low current applications. Devices to be flight tested in early 1974 with 96 series connected PNN+ junctions in a 2 cm X 2.3 cm size deliver 36 volts at 1 milliampere. Test data of M-J cells fabricated with resistivities of 10, 50, 100, 200, 450, and 1000 ohm cm silicon are presented and problem areas are discussed. An additional potential application of the M-J cell lies in ultilization of its high intensity performance that has been demonstrated at levels in excess of 100 AMO suns

The method involves a small auxiliary power circuit with a complementary control scheme that provides a smooth absorption and release of excess energy from and to the main DC-DC converter in the events of large load changes. This control mechanism interactively mitigates the large transient overshoots which would otherwise appear at the converter output.     Second Epoch Global VLBI Observations of Compact Radio Sources in the M82 Starburst Galaxy

    We have presented the results of a second epoch of global Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations, taken on 23 February 2001 at a wavelength of 18 cm, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These observations were aimed at studying the structural and flux evolution of some of the compact radio sources in the central region that have been identified as supernova remnants. The objects 41.95+575 and 43.31+592 have been studied, expansion velocities of 2500 +/- 1200 km/s and 7350 +/- 2100 km/s respectively have been derived. Flux densities of 31.1 +/- 0.3 mJy and 17.4 +/- 0.3 mJy have been measured for the two objects. These results are consistent with measurements and predictions from previous epochs.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.     Yield effects of soil compaction after different wheeling intensities on a silt soil in Norway

    Climate change with a higher amount of rain during harvesting increases the need for efficient harvesting and transport which leads to use of more effective and heavier machinery with an enhanced risk for compaction. Soil compaction is known to reduce the production capacity of a soil and can have severe negative ecological consequences and may reduce the production capacity of soils. Heavy loads can enhance subsoil compaction which is considered to be irreversible. The effect of contrasting wheeling frequency (1x; 10x) and different wheel loads on the bearing capacity of a silt soil was studied in cooperation project between NIBIO (Norway), Christian- Albrecht- Universität Kiel (Germany) and Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Norway). Furthermore it is examining the influence of the use of typical (Norwegian) transport equipment (cereals, potatoes) with differing loads (12Mg; 16Mg total weight) and inflation pressure on soil physical parameters and yields under the climatic conditions of SE Norway. Field measurements and sampling took place at Kongsvinger (60.25° N and 11.08° E) in SE Norway in June 2015. The soil is characterized as silt soil with 82% silt in the topsoil, overlying silt (84%). Unloaded reference plots and loaded wheel tracks were sampled by taking undisturbed and disturbed soil samples (20, 40, 60 cm depth) to determine soil physical parameters. Soil bearing capacity was measured by determining precompression (PC). Stress propagation during wheeling was measured with a Stress-state and displacement stress transducer systems (SST, DTS). Yields of barley yields were monitored on unwheeled and wheeled plots two years after compaction. We will present both the results from the soil physical analyses and use of the compaction verification tool (CVT) in addition to the results from the SST/ DTS measurements. The yield effect of compaction will be illustrated by showing the yield data (barley) for wheeled and unwheeled plots for the 2 years after the compaction. First results show that the compaction had significant effects on the yields, but may have a positive yield effect under certain condition

    Study of the April 20, 2007 CME-Comet Interaction Event with an MHD Model

    This study examines the tail disconnection event on April 20, 2007 on comet 2P/Encke, caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) at a heliocentric distance of 0.34 AU. During their interaction, both the CME and the comet are visible with high temporal and spatial resolution by the STEREO-A spacecraft. Previously, only current sheets or shocks have been accepted as possible reasons for comet tail disconnections, so it is puzzling that the CME caused this event. The MHD simulation presented in this work reproduces the interaction process and demonstrates how the CME triggered a tail disconnection in the April 20 event. It is found that the CME disturbs the comet with a combination of a 180180^\circ sudden rotation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), followed by a 9090^\circ gradual rotation. Such an interpretation applies our understanding of solar wind-comet interactions to determine the \textit{in situ} IMF orientation of the CME encountering Encke.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted by the ApJ Letter

    Evolution of the E(1/21+)E(3/21+)E(1/2^+_1)-E(3/2^+_1) energy spacing in odd-mass K, Cl and P isotopes for N=2028N=20-28

    The energy of the first excited state in the neutron-rich N=28 nucleus 45Cl has been established via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following proton removal. This energy value completes the systematics of the E(1/2^+_1)-E(3/2^+_1) level spacing in odd-mass K, Cl and P isotopes for N=20-28. The results are discussed in the framework of shell-model calculations in the sd-fp model space. The contribution of the central, spin-orbit and tensor components is discussed from a calculation based on a proton single-hole spectrum from G-matrix and pi + rho meson exchange potentials. A composite model for the proton 0d_{3/2}-1s_{1/2} single-particle energy shift is presented.Comment: Phys. Rev. C, in pres
