Use of a Granulocyte Immunofluorescence Assay Designed for Humans for Detection of Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies in Dogs with Chronic Enteropathies
Perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (pANCA) previously have been shown to be serum markers in dogs with chronic enteropathies, with dogs that have foodâresponsive disease (FRD) having higher frequencies of seropositivity than dogs with steroidâresponsive disease (SRD). The indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assay used in previous publications is timeâconsuming to perform, with low interobserver agreement. The evolution of plasticity of dauer larva developmental arrest in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.
Organisms can end up in unfavourable conditions and to survive this they have evolved various strategies. Some organisms, including nematodes, survive unfavourable conditions by undergoing developmental arrest. The model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has a developmental choice between two larval forms, and it chooses to develop into the arrested dauer larva form in unfavourable conditions (specifically, a lack of food and high population density, indicated by the concentration of a pheromone). Wild C. elegans isolates vary extensively in their dauer larva arrest phenotypes, and this prompts the question of what selective pressures maintain such phenotypic diversity? To investigate this we grew C. elegans in four different environments, consisting of different combinations of cues that can induce dauer larva development: two combinations of food concentration (high and low) in the presence or absence of a dauer larva-inducing pheromone. Five generations of artificial selection of dauer larvae resulted in an overall increase in dauer larva formation in most selection regimes. The presence of pheromone in the environment selected for twice the number of dauer larvae, compared with environments not containing pheromone. Further, only a high food concentration environment containing pheromone increased the plasticity of dauer larva formation. These evolutionary responses also affected the timing of the worms' reproduction. Overall, these results give an insight into the environments that can select for different plasticities of C. elegans dauer larva arrest phenotypes, suggesting that different combinations of environmental cues can select for the diversity of phenotypically plastic responses seen in C. elegans.We would like to thank Henrique Teotonio for the gift of the G140.A population, Louise Hughes and Laura Weldon for technical help, two anonymous reviewers for their comments, and NERC for funding.This is the final published version of the article. Radial Velocities of Six OB Stars
We present new results from a radial velocity study of six bright OB stars
with little or no prior measurements. One of these, HD 45314, may be a
long-period binary, but the velocity variations of this Be star may be related
to changes in its circumstellar disk. Significant velocity variations were also
found for HD 60848 (possibly related to nonradial pulsations) and HD 61827
(related to wind variations). The other three targets, HD 46150, HD 54879, and
HD 206183, are constant velocity objects, but we note that HD 54879 has
H emission that may originate from a binary companion. We illustrate

An Isolated Neurofibromal Polyp of the Colon
Solitary neurofibromal colonic polyps are a rare entity, particularly outside the setting of neurofibromatosis type 1. The clinical significance of such lesions has not yet been established. Though typically benign tumors, neurofibromas have been reported to undergo malignant transformation, with an increased risk of malignancy when associated with neurofibromatosis. In this case report, we present the rare case of a man found to have an isolated colonic neurofibroma without any personal/family history or clinical features of neurofibromatosis. A 59-year-old man with a history of dyslipidemia and degenerative joint disease presented for a routine screening colonoscopy. The colonoscopy revealed no abnormalities except a 3 mm transverse colon polyp and another 4 mm polyp in the descending colon. Biopsy results showed the descending colonic polyp to be a tubular adenoma; however, multiple levels of the 3 mm transverse colon polyp revealed interlacing bundles of spindle cells extending into the lamina propria with comma-shaped nuclei consistent with findings seen in neurofibroma. Isolated colonic neurofibromas are rare and understudied. While they are usually benign, they may undergo malignant transformation, especially when associated with neurofibromatosis. Thus, patients presenting with isolated neurofibromas should be followed for development of neurofibromatosis and malignancies
Mass and Angular Momentum Transfer in the Massive Algol Binary RY Persei
We present an investigation of H-alpha emission line variations observed in
the massive Algol binary, RY Per. We give new radial velocity data for the
secondary based upon our optical spectra and for the primary based upon high
dispersion UV spectra. We present revised orbital elements and an estimate of
the primary's projected rotational velocity (which indicates that the primary
is rotating 7 times faster than synchronous). We use a Doppler tomography
algorithm to reconstruct the individual primary and secondary spectra in the
region of H-alpha, and we subtract the latter from each of our observations to
obtain profiles of the primary and its disk alone. Our H-alpha observations of
RY Per show that the mass gaining primary is surrounded by a persistent but
time variable accretion disk. The profile that is observed outside-of-eclipse
has weak, double-peaked emission flanking a deep central absorption, and we
find that these properties can be reproduced by a disk model that includes the
absorption of photospheric light by the band of the disk seen in projection
against the face of the star. We developed a new method to reconstruct the disk
surface density distribution from the ensemble of H-alpha profiles observed
around the orbit, and this method accounts for the effects of disk occultation
by the stellar components, the obscuration of the primary by the disk, and flux
contributions from optically thick disk elements. The resulting surface density
distribution is elongated along the axis joining the stars, in the same way as
seen in hydrodynamical simulations of gas flows that strike the mass gainer
near trailing edge of the star. This type of gas stream configuration is
optimal for the transfer of angular momentum, and we show that rapid rotation

The interrelationship between water access, exclusive breastfeeding and diarrhea in children: a cross-sectional assessment across 19 African countries
Background Access to an improved water supply and practicing exclusive breastfeeding are essential for improving maternal and child health outcomes. However, few studies have been equipped to assess the interdependencies between access to improved water, practicing exclusive breastfeeding, and child health. The primary aim of our study was to assess whether access to an improved water supply and water-fetching were associated with mothersâ practice of exclusive breastfeeding.
Methods We analyzed data on 247090 mothers with children 5 months old or less using Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys from 19 African countries. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the relationship between our exposures and exclusive breastfeeding practice, while meta-analytic methods were used to pool adjusted estimates across 19 countries.
Results The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding ranged from 22% in Nigeria to 70% in Malawi. Pooled results showed water-fetching was not associated with exclusive breastfeeding (adjusted prevalence odds ratios (aPOR)=1.04, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.89, 1.21). Access to an improved water source was also not associated with exclusive breastfeeding (aPOR=1.06, 95% CI=0.94, 1.21). Across all countries many women were spending a significant amount of time water-fetching each day (mean time varied from 20 minutes in Ghana to 115 minutes in Mauritania). Exclusively breastfed children had 33% lower odds of diarrhea than those who were not exclusively breastfed (aPOR=0.67, 95% CI=0.56, 0.78).
Conclusion Our study is the first to assess the relationship between access to improved water supply, water-fetching and exclusive breastfeeding. Gattini 2010: Cutting Edge Science at the Bottom of the World
The high altitude Antarctic sites of Dome A and the South Pole offer intriguing locations for future large scale optical astronomical
Observatories. The Gattini project was created to measure the optical
sky brightness, large area cloud cover and aurora of the winter-time
sky above such high altitude Antarctic sites. The Gattini-DomeA camera
was installed on the PLATO instrument module as part of the Chinese-led
traverse to the highest point on the Antarctic plateau in January 2008.
This single automated wide field camera contains a suite of Bessel
photometric filters (B, V, R) and a long-pass red filter for the
detection and monitoring of OH emission. We have in hand one complete
winter-time dataset (2009) from the camera that was recently returned
in April 2010.
The Gattini-South Pole UV camera is a wide-field optical camera that in
2011 will measure for the first time the UV properties of the
winter-time sky above the South Pole dark sector. This unique dataset
will consist of frequent images taken in both broadband U and B filters
in addition to high resolution (R similar to 5000) long slit
spectroscopy over a narrow bandwidth of the central field. The camera
is a proof of concept for the 2m-class Antarctic Cosmic Web Imager
telescope, a dedicated experiment to directly detect and map the
redshifted lyman alpha fluorescence or Cosmic Web emission we believe
possible due to the unique geographical qualities of the site.

First results of site testing program at Mt. Shatdzhatmaz in 2007 - 2009
We present the first results of the site testing performed at
Mt.~Shatdzhatmaz at Northern Caucasus, where the new Sternberg astronomical
institute 2.5-m telescope will be installed. An automatic site monitor
instrumentation and functionality are described together with the methods of
measurement of the basic astroclimate and weather parameters. The clear night
sky time derived on the basis of 2006 -- 2009 data amounts to 1340 hours per
year. Principle attention is given to the measurement of the optical turbulence
altitude distribution which is the most important characteristic affecting
optical telescopes performance. For the period from November 2007 to October
2009 more than 85\,000 turbulence profiles were collected using the combined
MASS/DIMM instrument. The statistical properties of turbulent atmosphere above
the summit are derived and the median values for seeing ~arcsec
and free-atmosphere seeing ~arcsec are determined.
Together with the estimations of isoplanatic angle ~arcsec and
time constant \tau_0 = 2.58 \mbox{ ms}, these are the first representative
results obtained for Russian sites which are necessary for development of

Wind Accretion and State Transitions in Cygnus X-1
We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring program (from 1998 to
2002) of the H-alpha emission strength in HDE 226868, the optical counterpart
of the black hole binary, Cyg X-1. The H-alpha profiles consist of (1) a P
Cygni component associated with the wind of the supergiant, (2) emission
components that attain high velocity at the conjunctions and that probably form
in enhanced outflows both towards and away from the black hole, and (3) an
emission component that moves in anti-phase with the supergiant's motion. We
argue that the third component forms in accreted gas near the black hole, and
the radial velocity curve of the emission is consistent with a mass ratio of
M_X / M_opt = 0.36 +/- 0.05. We find that there is a general anti-correlation
between the H-alpha emission strength and X-ray flux in the sense that when the
H-alpha emission is strong (W_\lambda < -0.5 Angstroms) the X-ray flux is
weaker and the spectrum harder. On the other hand, there is no correlation
between H-alpha emission strength and X-ray flux when H-alpha is weak. During
the low/hard X-ray state, the strong wind is fast and the accretion rate is
relatively low, while in the high/soft state the weaker, highly ionized wind
attains only a moderate velocity and the accretion rate increases. We argue
that the X-ray transitions from the normal low/hard to the rare high/soft state
are triggered by episodes of decreased mass loss rate in the supergiant donor
