Polymer Matrix Nanocomposites by Inkjet Printing
This paper describes work on a continuing project to form functional composites that contain
ceramic nanoparticles using a Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) inkjet printing method. The process
involves inkjet deposition of monomer/particle suspensions in layers followed by curing each layer in
sequence using UV radiation. The reactive monomer is hexanediol-diacrylate (HDODA); the polymer
forming reaction proceeds by a free radical mechanism. The liquid monomer containing nanoparticles
is essentially a printing ink formulation. Successfully suspending the particles in the monomer is
critical. We have developed a surface treatment method for forming stable suspensions of the
nanoparticles so that they remain discrete throughout the processing sequence.
The SFF process involves careful control of the polymer cure so that the interface between layers
is seamless and residual stresses in the composites are eliminated. An immediate use for such
composites is in optical applications as gradient refractive index lenses (GRIN). GRIN lenses have
planar surfaces, eliminating the need for costly grinding and polishing. The planar surfaces also
eliminate optical aberrations that result at the edges of spherical lenses and diminish the accuracy of
focus.
If the appropriate nanoparticles are fully dispersed they will modify the polymer's refractive index
without interfering with light transmission. The effect is additive with volume concentration. Using
'inks' of different compositions in a multiple nozzle inkjet printer allows the formation of composites
with precise composition gradients. Since an object is built one planar layer at a time, changes can be
made readily both within each layer and from layer to layer. Inkjet printing with picoliter resolution is
ideal for this task.
Working with SiC nanoparticles in HDODA as a model system for demonstrating the inkjet
deposition process, nanocomposite films with a linear concentration gradient varying from 0 to 4.5%
(wt) were fabricated on Silicon wafers. These composites are 30 layer films, which total 140µm in
thickness. Each layer in the composite is about 5 µm in thickness. Analytical methods for
characterizing the dispersion of the nanoparticles in the composite and some of the salient optical
properties of the composites also were established. The status of the program is reviewed in this

Simulated Economic Impact of TED Regulations on Selected Vessels in the Texas Shrimp Fishery
Shrimp fishermen trawling in the Gulf of Mexico and south Atlantic inadvertently capture and kill sea turtles which are classified as endangered species. Recent legislation requires the use of a Turtle Excluder Device(TED) which, when in place in the shrimp trawl, reduces sea turtle mortality. The impact of the TED on shrimp production is not known. This intermediate analysis of the TED regulations using an annual firm level simulation model indicated that the average Texas shrimp vessel had a low probability of being an economic success before regulations were enacted. An assumption that the TED regulations resulted in decreased production aggravated this condition and the change in Ending Net Worth and Net Present Value of Ending Net Worth before and after a TED was placed in the net was significant at the 5 percent level.
However, the difference in the Internal Rate of Return for the TED and non-TED simulations was not significant unless the TED caused a substantial change in catch. This analysis did not allow for interactions between the fishermen in the shrimp industry, an assumption which could significantly alter the impact of TED use on the catch and earnings of the individual shrimp vessel
IMPACTS OF PRICE VARIABILITY ON MARKETING MARGINS AND PRODUCER VIABILITY IN THE TEXAS WHEAT INDUSTRY
The effects on marketing margins and Texas what producers of shifting from a period with stable prices to a period without stable prices were investigated using both econometric and simulation techniques. Empirical evidence reveals wheat export firms are risk averse and that either futures markets were unable to absorb increased price risk or futures markets absorbed increased price risk at a cost of $0.054 per bushel. Increased variability in prices and reduced farm program benefits substantially reduced the probability of Texas wheat producers receiving a reasonable return on equity and a reasonable rate of asset accumulation.Crop Production/Industries, Marketing,
Principal stress pore pressure prediction: utilizing drilling measurements to predict pore pressure
A novel method of predicting pore pressure has been invented. The method
utilizes currently recorded drilling measurements to predict the pore pressure of the
formation through which the bit is drilling. The method applies Mohr’s Theory to
describe the stresses at the bottom of the borehole. From the stress state and knowledge
of Mohr’s Envelope, the pore pressure is predicted. To verify the method, a test
procedure was developed. The test procedure enabled systematic collection and
processing of the drilling data to calculate the pore pressure prediction. The test
procedure was then applied to industry data that was recorded at the surface. The
industry data were composed of wells from different geographical regions.
Two conclusions were deduced from the research. First, Mohr’s Theory indicates
that the model is valid. Second, because of too much variation in the torque
measurements the model cannot be proved and requires further investigation
Nano-scale composition of commercial white powders for development of latent fingerprints on adhesives
This is the post-print version of the article - Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier.Titanium dioxide based powders are regularly used in the development of latent fingerprints on dark surfaces. For analysis of prints on adhesive tapes, the titanium dioxide can be suspended in a surfactant and used in the form of a powder suspension. Commercially available products, whilst having nominally similar composition, show varying levels of effectiveness of print development, with some powders adhering to the background as well as the print. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and laser particle sizing of the fingerprint powders show TiO2 particles with a surrounding coating, tens of nanometres thick, consisting of Al and Si rich material, with traces of sodium and sulphur. Such aluminosilicates are commonly used as anti-caking agents and to aid adhesion or functionality of some fingerprint powders; however, the morphology, thickness, coverage and composition of the aluminosilicates are the primary differences between the white powder formulations and could be related to variation in the efficacy of print development.This work is part funded by the Home Office Scientific Development Branch, UK
Lysophosphatidic acid mediates myeloid differentiation within the human bone marrow microenvironment.
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a pleiotropic phospholipid present in the blood and certain tissues at high concentrations; its diverse effects are mediated through differential, tissue specific expression of LPA receptors. Our goal was to determine if LPA exerts lineage-specific effects during normal human hematopoiesis. In vitro stimulation of CD34+ human hematopoietic progenitors by LPA induced myeloid differentiation but had no effect on lymphoid differentiation. LPA receptors were expressed at significantly higher levels on Common Myeloid Progenitors (CMP) than either multipotent Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells (HSPC) or Common Lymphoid Progenitors (CLP) suggesting that LPA acts on committed myeloid progenitors. Functional studies demonstrated that LPA enhanced migration, induced cell proliferation and reduced apoptosis of isolated CMP, but had no effect on either HSPC or CLP. Analysis of adult and fetal human bone marrow sections showed that PPAP2A, (the enzyme which degrades LPA) was highly expressed in the osteoblastic niche but not in the perivascular regions, whereas Autotaxin (the enzyme that synthesizes LPA) was expressed in perivascular regions of the marrow. We propose that a gradient of LPA with the highest levels in peri-sinusoidal regions and lowest near the endosteal zone, regulates the localization, proliferation and differentiation of myeloid progenitors within the bone marrow marrow
Temporal variability of microbial response to crude oil exposure in the northern Gulf of Mexico
Oil spills are common occurrences in the United States and can result in extensive ecological damage. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was the largest accidental spill recorded. Many studies were performed in deep water habitats to understand the microbial response to the released crude oil. However, much less is known about how planktonic coastal communities respond to oil spills and whether that response might vary over the course of the year. Understanding this temporal variability would lend additional insight into how coastal Florida habitats may have responded to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. To assess this, the temporal response of planktonic coastal microbial communities to acute crude oil exposure was examined from September 2015 to September 2016 using seawater samples collected from Pensacola Beach, Florida, at 2-week intervals. A standard oil exposure protocol was performed using water accommodated fractions made from MC252 surrogate oil under photo-oxidizing conditions. Dose response curves for bacterial production and primary production were constructed from 3H-leucine incorporation and 14C-bicarbonate fixation, respectively. To assess drivers of temporal patterns in inhibition, a suite of biological and environmental parameters was measured including bacterial counts, chlorophyll a, temperature, salinity, and nutrients. Additionally, 16S rRNA sequencing was performed on unamended seawater to determine if temporal variation in the in situ bacterial community contributed to differences in inhibition. We observed that there is temporal variation in the inhibition of primary and bacterial production due to acute crude oil exposure. We also identified significant relationships of inhibition with environmental and biological parameters that quantitatively demonstrated that exposure to water-soluble crude oil constituents was most detrimental to planktonic microbial communities when temperature was high, when there were low inputs of total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and when there was low bacterial diversity or low phytoplankton biomass
Studying the photometric and spectroscopic variability of the magnetic hot supergiant Orionis Aa
Massive stars play a significant role in the chemical and dynamical evolution
of galaxies. However, much of their variability, particularly during their
evolved supergiant stage, is poorly understood. To understand the variability
of evolved massive stars in more detail, we present a study of the O9.2Ib
supergiant Ori Aa, the only currently confirmed supergiant to host a
magnetic field. We have obtained two-color space-based BRIght Target Explorer
photometry (BRITE) for Ori Aa during two observing campaigns, as well
as simultaneous ground-based, high-resolution optical CHIRON spectroscopy. We
perform a detailed frequency analysis to detect and characterize the star's
periodic variability. We detect two significant, independent frequencies, their
higher harmonics, and combination frequencies: the stellar rotation period
d, most likely related to the presence of the
stable magnetic poles, and a variation with a period of d
attributed to circumstellar environment, also detected in the H and
several He I lines, yet absent in the purely photospheric lines. We confirm the
variability with /4, likely caused by surface
inhomogeneities, being the possible photospheric drivers of the discrete
absorption components. No stellar pulsations were detected in the data. The
level of circumstellar activity clearly differs between the two BRITE observing
campaigns. We demonstrate that Ori Aa is a highly variable star with
both periodic and non-periodic variations, as well as episodic events. The
rotation period we determined agrees well with the spectropolarimetric value
from the literature. The changing activity level observed with BRITE could
explain why the rotational modulation of the magnetic measurements was not

BRITE-Constellation reveals evidence for pulsations in the enigmatic binary Carinae
Car is a massive, eccentric binary with a rich observational history.
We obtained the first high-cadence, high-precision light curves with the
BRITE-Constellation nanosatellites over 6 months in 2016 and 6 months in 2017.
The light curve is contaminated by several sources including the Homunculus
nebula and neighboring stars, including the eclipsing binary
CPD592628. However, we found two coherent oscillations in the light
curve. These may represent pulsations that are not yet understood but we
postulate that they are related to tidally excited oscillations of Car's
primary star, and would be similar to those detected in lower-mass eccentric
binaries. In particular, one frequency was previously detected by van Genderen
et al. and Sterken et al. through the time period of 1974 to 1995 through
timing measurements of photometric maxima. Thus, this frequency seems to have
been detected for nearly four decades, indicating that it has been stable in
frequency over this time span. These pulsations could help provide the first
direct constraints on the fundamental parameters of the primary star if

Discrete eddies in the northern North Atlantic as observed by looping RAFOS floats

eddies in the northern North Atlantic with the objective of determining their geographical
distribution and characteristics. Floats that made two or more consecutive loops in the
same direction (loopers) were considered to have been in an eddy. Overall 15% (24 float
years) of the float data were in loopers. One hundred and eight loopers were identified in
96 different eddies. Roughly half of the eddies were cyclonic (49%) and half were
anticyclonic (51%), although the percentages varied in different regions. A few eddies
were quasi-stationary for long times, one for over a year in the Iceland Basin, and many
others clearly translated, often in the direction of the general circulation as observed by
non-looping floats. Several floats were trapped in eddies in the vicinity of the North
Atlantic Current just upstream (west) of the Charlie Gibbs (52ºN) and Faraday (50ºN)
Fracture Zones, which seem to be preferred routes for flow crossing the mid-Atlantic
ridge. Five floats looped in four anticyclones which translated southwestward away from
the eastern boundary near the Goban Spur (47ºN-50ºN). These could have been weak
meddies forming from remnants of warm salty Mediterranean Water advected northward
along the eastern boundary.Funds for
